Versatile third-year player Jake Carlisle says he is gradually adapting to the physical demands of an AFL pre-season, despite a gruelling campaign under second year coach James Hird.
Carlisle, who proved his versatility late in the 2011 season as both a forward and backman, said the playing list was enjoying both the training and physical conditioning sessions.
“We’re training hard and I think all the boys are pretty happy with how things are going so far this pre-season,” Carlisle said.
“Dean (Robinson) obviously has a big, tough pre-season in store for us and he’s proved that so far, but we’re happy with that and hopefully we’re now going to get somewhere.
“We all love a challenge, so we’re just trying to enjoy it at the moment.”
Carlisle said the physical demands of the pre-season campaign were a challenge both mentally and physically for the players.
“It’s a hard game and we do train hard,” he said.
“It is challenging both mentally and physically on our bodies, but I think with experience you slowly become used to it all.
“After each session, the main messages from the fitness department are on the importance of recovery.”
After a break-out year in 2011, the 20-year-old says he is hoping to take his game to a new level next season.
“Personally, I managed to play a few games last season which I was happy about. I think that if I have a good pre-season and put in the hard work and put on a few more kilos, I want to be able to hold down a key position spot in the side next year,” Carlisle said.
“I think consistency is the key, so I’ll definitely be working hard this pre-season.”
Carlisle said the Bombers had much to learn from the 2011 season, as the club looks to build on overall improvement and development across the board.
“While we were happy with last season, it obviously wasn’t as good as what we wanted with the standards that were set. We want to get better in every aspect of the game and we want to continue to improve and develop the players.”

If they can put some bulk on this boy he is going to be deadly. He takes a pretty good mark, add some bulk and extra strength he will be frightening!
good stuff jake saw you play your fisrt game and was impressed with ya game mate u put in a good 2011 keep it up mate u can only get better and bigger.still say your suited in the backline. goodluck
Jake showed a lot this year, and should be even better in the years to come, which will make him and Hurls a devastating forward combination.
This kid is going to be a star! Hurley, Carlisle, Ryder, Crameri key forwards and Pears, Hooker and Fletch key backs... looking good for season 2012!
Umm, I reckon that, ummm, you are the goods Jake, ummm, I'm pretty sure of that, ummm. Forward or back, ummm, this will be your season, ummm....
Sorry mate - looking forward to watching you this year, saw your first game too, many more before your last, sure of that!
Inspiring attitude Jake. Looking forward to seeing you out on the field, flying high, in 2012. Yes it's a tough game & not getting any easier. Very testing on all levels. Makes it great to watch though. Admire you all. Cheers Gail
Hey EI, some before and after shots of some of the boys in about ten weeks time to see the development of their bodies would be a real bonus for fans.
Good to see he's bulking up a little, but it will be another year or two until we'll get a chance to see him at full size. Not to say he won't play some tremendous footy in the meantime, mind you! Go Dons!!
Jake, you have the potential to really be a great KPP,you show plenty of ability now just follow the advice of our great club & you will receive the benefits. This Kid will sneak up & knock some of the bigger names on their butts.Go get em Jake!!!!
Carlisle is just 20 years old. Hard to believe with the way he plays. The future is very bright at Bomberland.
Brad - good chance you might find yourself in Angies naughty chair.....lol. Give the boy a break he is a footballer and not a media performer and that is all that matters.
Agree with you Harry and a brilliant suggestion from you - Paul Herbert.
Great hands and maturity for a young bloke, but gotta bulk up otherwise you will get out muscled in the one on ones as happened this season. You did ok in the packs but to be a key position player that you want then you have to stand your ground. You will get injured more often such as the coach did if you stay light except he dived under packs and you will be leaping over them.
put on a few kilos and he would make a champion part time ruckman with that leap. GO BOMBERS!
The old fashioned FF, CHF roles are changing. To have Carlisle, Ryder, Crameri, Hurley, O'Brien, Dell'Olio, Gumbleton rotating forward roles could be a masterstroke. Knights suggested the twin talls...Hird now has a forest.
They are Bombers now no matter where they played, where they came from or what was perceived we needed. Few of them may play in our next flag! Doing a top job Dods. In Hird we trust.
Cheers Alan. Thought I may get slapped over that one - as long as its not big Jake doing it! Be good to get a story on Longy to see where he's at now.
bradley your blog about this young gun was idiotic and full of disrespect. Grow up bradley.
Cheers Ralph. That hit home coming from you as you are (over) qualified in that department.
That's ok Brad, good time of the year for a laugh, something prunelabore will not have, now that Fev and Andrew L are not Bomberbound.. Young Jake will learn about interviews once confident off field as well..
eg.. that quick kick for goal against Port was pure magic, and sums real talent up to a "T".. Go Bombers :-) :-)
well said Ralph. sadly it is what we have come to expect from ScarBras. if you ever see him you will understand why. go bombers!
I hope that you showed that sort of courage on the ground Robert. At least part time.
Jake, you have the ability to be a very important team player, and the opportunity to consolidate your place in the Bomber combination this year.I look forward to seeing you dominate 100% in 2012, go hard old mate.
