A number of key Essendon stars returned to the gym this week ahead of the official pre-season training schedule.
Essendon forward Stewart Crameri said since the Bombers’ 2011 campaign had finished, a number of players had been working hard on their own individual training regimes ahead of the official start of pre-season.
“A number of boys have started their pre-season early, but I think it can only be a good thing, especially for us younger guys,” Crameri said.
“We have started back to gain a bit of a base, so we’re ready for the pre-season as well as the season ahead.”
The Bombers’ 2011 leading goal kicker said new high performance manager Dean Robinson had already made his mark, working with the players to develop their bodies and respective training regimes.
“Dean is very good and he is changing a lot of the programs. I think a lot of the boys are going to get an early shock, but we’re definitely going to be better off for it in the 2012 season,” Crameri said.
“Anthony Long is back running and doing all the drills with Dean, and Dean is making him train really hard which is a good sign to see.”
Midfielders Jason Winderlich, Brent Prismall and Courtney Dempsey were all making significant in-roads with their training programs, following knee injuries sustained during the 2011 season.
“Brent Prismall has just started running and Winderlich and Dempsey are running with me and the rest of the group. They’re all really starting to get back in to it which is great for them.”
Crameri said he was excited by the prospect of Scott Gumbleton completing an injury free pre-season, after the 23-year-old returned to the gym yesterday in prime condition.
“Gumby was moving very well and was looking good in training yesterday,” he said.
“Young Luke Davis is also looking really good too, so it will be exciting to see what this pre-season holds for the both of them.
“All the guys got a bit of a shock yesterday to see how hard training was, but we’re going to get used to it and we’re going to all put in a big pre-season campaign. I’m definitely looking forward to it.”

What we're hoping to see is how our new midfielders Ross and Browne go with a full pre-season behind them and how will Steinberg go up forward? 2012 is time to back the talent scouts and try their new generation renewables in the engine room.
on yah! stewie, lets hope for another good year from you, great to see a big lad up in the forward line ready to kick some goals......
GO BOMBERS 2012..
I've read that the Geelong players rate Dean Robinson very highly, and that he did a good job of getting them very fit and muscled up, he should be able to do that for our guys too.
Cramers is very impressive and I'm not surprised that he is willing, along with others, to do more than is asked of him. After the "entree" the guys served up in 2011, I can't wait for the main course in 2012.
Perhaps Andrew Welsh could be given a formal advocacy role for the selection of youngsters
The Gun has spoken..... There will be no stopping the Bomber machine in 2012.....
All players have to perform at their best next year to achieve the ultimate goal....
We will certainly find out who can cut it next year.....
Great attitude Stewart, you are blessed with natural sporting ability & pace, unfortunately for the majority of the squad, it doesn't matter how much training they do, how fit they get they are & will be too slow pace
Best news we could hear! Build the bodies up so we can get harder and more physical in 2012! Best of luck for pre-season boys! Go Dons!
Build the minds, bodies, experience, confidence and the game, and it will come!
Pretty excited and looking forward to a fitter, stronger and pumped up team in 2012! This is exactly what is needed to be able to withstand the hard knocks and bumps and be able to keep one's feet.
Great to hear. What I like is the idea that our list from the Carlton Elimination Final COULD contain Winderlich, Dempsey, Prismall, Gumbleton, Long, Crameri, Browne, Ross, Steinberg and the smokey, Luke Davis. I remember Fletcher was a big wrap for this quiet achiever pre-season. Very good early signs.
I also notice that Ben Duscher did well at the post-combine last week, especially getting a 28/30 for the kicking drill. Many have said on this site that this guy is a top prospect. His results now suggest he would be a good target before others grab him. And could Matt Little be the next JPod?
How motivated and encouraging are you Stewart. good luck to you all for a successful and injury free pre-season. never underestimate the benefits of effective stretching to your development.
Looking forward to a Bomber blitz in '12. But no mention of Pearsy ?
Scott Gumbleton???
I had such high hopes for this bloke.
I tell ya what if he kicks more than 35 goals in 2012...
I will I will.... ummmmm not sure.
I hope he does..... but....
Essendon Insider - Could we please have a preseason program for the supporters to follow like John Quinn use to do years ago? Maybe we could be the fittest supporters in the league too!
That's GREAT news ! Crameri was the main ingredient in our improvement this season, and to have him so keen and focused after injury is wonderful. It's fantastic to read of A.Long out on the track training hard, and our trump card Scot Gumbleton completely injury free. Go Guys !
Fantastic, However can the new high performance manager fix our hamstring problems ???? thats the question and will he make sure we do not burn out half way thru the year. Will Gumby perform or do we have a dud, where will Hurley play, can we afford to play Hille Ryder and Bellchambers, need to fix a lot of things Hirdy and we need to win games against weaker opposition. Lots of questions.
Anthong Long could be the young gun running off half back we need... Him and Dempsey together could be a force..
Anthony Long could be exactly what we need running off half back! Him and Dempsey combined could end up being a rebounding force!
Great idea re the fitness program Steve, we could all lose a few k's! Stewie, LOVE your dedication and work ethic, and it's clear that we need to muscle up considerably to match it with the big boys, coz we definitely have the talent!
Go Stewie. All the boys need to get bigger and stronger (look at geelong). Weights , weights and more weights must go with all the with running.
Can imagine that every player on the list who hasn't got a firm spot will be saying "hey, I'm a midfielder too." Yet its only fair after last season that, form being adequate, the young guns get first shot.
Once our players are aged between 25-28 we will a flag I have no doubt about that! In the mean time lets rattle some cages.
Love this Crameri guy...the way he moves , marks and kicks. Was a gun in 2011 and will be firing silver bullets in 2012...Go Bombers...looking forward to kicking some blue butt in 2012
Really want to hear that Gumby and Longy are in top nick about mid March, not October! Longy is only 20 and 6'2. Will be real quick I'd think. Maybe he can give Cyril a call and see how his new training / running program has helped the hammies. Luke Davis, Ariel, Browney and who else to come in the draft........ Go Dodoro!
Good point, Brad. It's nice to hear they are "fit, moving well andd firing" now. Not so enjoyable come Feb/March reading "...hoping to be ready for Round One".
Try again, Peter, maybe play Paddy at CHB, along with Hurley they are the only 2 players we have capable of playing one on one down back against the best big key forwards, he proved against Cloke he can do what few others could by restricting Cloke to a couple of soft goals after the game was won
Good to see the boys are keen and bringing excitement back to our club, Hirdy said he would make Essendonfc fearsome as we once were and our foundations were laid out last year and the boys are now creating it! Am a very proud supporter!
