New mature-age rookie Corey Dell’Olio says he is still coming to terms with being recruited to the Bombers, following yesterday’s AFL Rookie Draft.
The 175cm forward from South Fremantle comes to Essendon with speed, strength and a dangerous goal sense.
“It was a big shock yesterday when the phone call came through,” Dell’Olio said.
“I am extremely excited about it all and I can’t wait to get over to Melbourne and start training.”
Recruited to Essendon as a mature-age rookie, the 22-year-old said his perseverance in the WAFL competition had finally paid off.
“Football is something I’ve wanted to pursue for a while and I’m thrilled that Essendon has finally given me an opportunity,” Dell’Olio said.
“There have been a few successful mature-age rookies drafted to clubs over the last couple of years, so hopefully I can do as well as some have done in the past.”
Dell’Olio said he was looking forward to mixing in with the Bombers’ current players, who he believes will be crucial to his football development.
“There are some great footballers at Essendon and to even have the chance to train with them is very exciting,” Dell’Olio said.
“I’m looking forward to learning off the players – learning about the work rates and the way they each go about their football – so I can’t wait to meet everyone.
“I’m excited to be a part of the team, because I really think the Bombers are going places.”
Dell’Olio joins other new mature-age recruits Mark Baguley and Brendan Lee, as well as Lauchlan Dalgleish, Hal Hunter and Anthony Long who were taken by Essendon in yesterday’s AFL Rookie Draft.

Welcome to Essendon Corey, I think that you are a very good prospect.

I think Cory will play this year, & possibly Brendan & Mark & Lauchlan's pace will be handy as well, we might have to "invent" 2 or 3 long term injuries or ???
For a while now we have been hammered consistently by small forwards (Betts, LeCras come to mind)but Davey, Jetta have not been as damaging. If given a chance, Dell'Olio sounds as if he may be that player, or at least scare Davey & Jetta to better things.
welcome Corey, EFC isn't complete without some Italian blood!! FORZA COREY!!!!
Ill be the first to say it you look like Mercuryyyyy.
Mature age at 22!! Life in football is so short- every opportunity is like gold (or to update the analogy like more valuable sunlight-driven water-splitting rare earth metals like ruthenium or iridium)
With you on that Wes. Think we may be just calling this new gun Corey for awhile until we master the surname. Trav Colyer will step up to another level as well this season. Alwyn and Leroy definitely on notice.
would love to know how dell'olio and other mature aged players slipped through draft without being picked up if they were so great. Good thing the bombers picked them up any how.
Exciting pick-ups in the rookie draft, and Corey looks no exception. Welcome mate, have a successful career with the mighty Bombers! You've got 9 mates from WA to stop you getting homesick.
Darren Bewick left a huge void which has never been filled successfully to date. Looks like Corey might be able to do just that from all reports.
Another Italian playing for the Bombers, to follow the likes of Mercuri, Misiti, Alessio.
Forza Corey. Do us proud
He might be a midget but who cares if he can bang through a bag of goals next season. But crikey he needs to hit the weights big time.
welcome to The Bombers mate I Can.t wait 4 all our new plays to play in 2012
1/ All the very best with your dream to build your career here Corey.. Welcome to Bomberland to all our Rookies.. Good Luck !!! Selection pressure each week has always been a most important ingredient when we are chasing a consistent level of perfection during any of our successful "eras".. It has been building over a number of years, and as a noticeable lift in maturity with many on the list is obviously presenting itself in stages along our journey, coupled with the new home base and going it alone with the VFL alignment in the next 12 months,
2/ctd.. other Clubs will start to become uneasy once more come each September...What took Sheeds much longer to build a few times,is now happening at what seems a much faster pace, quicker fast tracking, and hopefully will last longer which I am sure was always the Club's Goal to pursue since post 2007..
The really keen analytically minded ones amongst us I think might understand what I am trying to convey here.. Go You Mighty Bombers :-) :-)
Welcome aboard the Bomber express Corey. You're part of a great club & hopefully a great team. I'll be happy if you can shut down LeCras too. Stu & Angus need a goal sneek in there to take the pressure off. Good fortune to you.
Good one Rowan. Welcome Corey. You look the goods to me. Keeping working hard and put the pressure on the other guys.
EI, will these new guys be joining the group in QLD, if not when do they officially start training, cheers
on another topic, hocome Bock gets 2 weeks and poor Deano gets 13 weeks? AFL clearly needs to explain themselves!
It's always nice to see such appreciation in the new guys, even if at times their hopes last only a year or two in this cutthroat system. Comes highly rated, this lad; and let's face it, 22 years of age is still very young, despite the "mature age" tag.
EI, have I offended you in some way, I have asked 2 very simple, non controversial questions lately and received no reply, if you are not going to answer them why bother posting them
Mark - apologies for the delayed response, but at the moment we have an EI temp. In reply to your question, a number of the new rookies went up to QLD however some had to stay in Melbourne to finish off their working commitments. We look forward to welcoming them all to Windy Hill leading up to Christmas.
Thanx EI, and I was curious as to if the new complex will have an "altitude" room or similar as it seems to be the "in thing" now, cheers
Have just caught up with the rookie draft results. Sad to see Sam Dunnell lost to another club and can't believe that not one of 18 clubs thought Waylen Mansen worth a punt. Also disappointed that none of our discarded rookies have found a new home.
Apologies for the late welcome, but well done to all our new Rookies! :) I'm looking forward to watching you play for our great Club. Have fun and come out fighting next year! X Angie
