Dyson Heppell wins 2011 AFL Rising Star Award

Dyson Heppell has become the first Essendon player in history to win the NAB AFL Rising Star, holding off highly fancied Eagle Luke Shuey on Wednesday.

All season long, Heppell and Shuey were considered the strong favourites to take out the Ron Evans Medal after earning the first two nominations of the year.
 
Heppell polled 44 votes out of a possible 45. Shuey polled 37 and Gold Coast big man Zac Smith came in third with 21 votes. Gold Coast's David Swallow and West Coast's Jack Darling rounded out the top five.

19-year-old Heppell was voted the winner by a panel comprising chairman and AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou, AFL general manager football operations Adrian Anderson, AFL national talent manager Kevin Sheehan and former stars Kevin Bartlett, Danny Frawley, Glen Jakovich, Luke Darcy, Leigh Matthews and Mark Ricciuto.

Heppell did not miss a game this year, playing mainly off half-back and in the midfield. He averaged 21.5 possessions.

After winning the 2010 Morrish Medal for the best and fairest in the TAC Cup, Heppell was touted as a potential top five pick in last year's NAB AFL Draft but slipped through to the Bombers at pick eight.

One of his biggest influences has been his childhood hero and now coach James Hird.

The pair's first meeting came the night before the draft when the Essendon legend visited the Heppell family caravan in Burleigh Heads to get to know the man he hoped to draft.

His guidance and advice was a constant for Heppell throughout the season and was crucial in helping him gather 20 touches and getting a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination in his first AFL game against the Bulldogs in round one.

Essendon coach James Hird said Dyson has exceeded expectations in his AFL first season.
 
"Dyson's first season of football has been one of the best I have seen - he's played some terrific football and has worked exceptionally hard," Hird said.
 
"His ability to prepare himself to play every game this season and to have an impact in those games shows his resilience and just how hard he works.
 
"If he keeps training hard, learning from the coaches and playing his role in the team, we expect him to have a very long and successful AFL career."
 
As well as becoming the first Essendon player to win the award, Heppell has become the first graduate of TAC Cup team Gippsland Power to win a Rising Star, an impressive feat considering the Power have provided the League with stars such as Brendon Goddard, Scott Pendlebury, Dale Thomas and Jarryd Roughead.

Absolute no brainer. Hepp's was the best yongster of the year. The sats show it, his preperation shows it, his leadership, his versatility, his mind set which is tough and uncompromising, his skills, need I continue. This Rising Star will go down as the least demur, the least contoversal and the least debated of any. Never has there been a 1st year player to take on so much responsibility and deliver like Hepp has. All Australian should have been a possibility, especially with the likes of Shaw missing so many games. Not that it will bother Hepp; his concern is winning footy games for the EFC and tha't what it's all about!

Just to continue if you don't mind. Congratulations to the recruiting/list department for showing faith in this kid. Thank you for doing your homework and fully assessing the OP issues. It doesn't surprise me. The likes of Hird and Bomba had injury woes and they pressed on to become what they have become. Another thing about Hepp is that he is still physically underdeveloped. When you think of blokes like Rich who enter the game as men and then compare to Hepp who enters as a growing boy, the difference is chalk and cheese. God knows what this kid can be!

Last time an award went to an Essendon player,I was freezin' my .... ... outside Windy Hill camping out for Finals Tickies and watched Wanga win the Brownlow on a 12v B&W TV plugged into my car,parked a street away from where I was in the Q... Well what can I say. From the first game Dyson played and then to have him sit behind me in the 2nd NAB cup match I knew from what I saw that we had a champion person and player in our mist.He was very polite and let me take his photo which takes pride of place along with my other champoions. He will grow to be a Hird type player and person and that is fantastic to have him here at Essendon.Congrats az 100 times over.

In my opinion, Hepps had this in the bank from about round 15. As good as Shuey was for the Eagles, he had no where near the excellent season Dyson did; averging 20+ disposals a game, kicked a few goals and usually among Essendon's best EVERY week and featuring in all of our wins. Truly deserved; justice has played out! Welldone Dyson.

I saw a training clip of Heppell before this season and wrote then; this kid remains me of James Hird. Not only great skills, but also can read the game and knows where the ball should go – and delivers. This announcement represents our only player recognition for almost a decade. These days we aren't rated by anyone outside of the club, as evidenced by our guys consistently overlooked in All-Australian teams, brownlow polling, and any number of media awards. But I'd always prefer a team with balanced contribution than a team loaded with stars, much like our opponents this week; and, bugger what other people think anyway.

Unfortunately I,ve only been able to see you in a handful of games as I am a retired pensioner living at Pelton in N.S.W. and as such am only able to watch on regional free to air TV.
