Egan appointed as Essendon assistant coach

Essendon Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Matthew Egan as an assistant coach.

Egan, 28, will join the Bombers after spending the past two years in a coaching capacity at the Geelong Football Club.

General manager of football operations Paul Hamilton said Egan’s knowledge of the game and his ability to develop players will be of significant benefit to the club’s emerging playing list.

“We are very lucky to have secured someone of Matt’s experience who will be able to relate to our young playing list through his experiences as a player and as a young coach,” Hamilton said.

Egan said he was looking forward to a new challenge at the Essendon Football Club.

“I am very excited to get the opportunity to work with Essendon. They are obviously a young and exciting playing group and a group that I feel I can have an impact with given my experiences,” Egan said.

“It’s a great opportunity for my career. I am also rapt to work with some young and dynamic coaches and that’s what excited me to work with James Hird and the rest of the coaching group and I just can’t wait to get started.”

Egan played 59 games for Geelong after debuting in 2005 before a foot injury prematurely ended his career. Egan was appointed as an assistant coach in Geelong’s VFL side in 2009 before becoming an assistant for the Geelong Cats in 2010.

One ex-Cat out, one ex-Cat in... now if they could just convince some of their younger players to come over... Welcome, Matthew Egan, and good luck with your time with EFC!

Welcome to the team Matthew. Recruiting coaching staff from the best team in the land is good thinking and Matthews knowledge will be invaluable to Essendon. I'm hoping that Essendon may also be able to offer a position to Mark Harvey. We love Harvs and I think it would be great to have him back home.

Great news, obviously very well thought of at the Cats and a welcome addition to Windy Hill. Good luck Matthew.

Welcome to your new Home Matthew.. fresh for the Premier Club... We'd hear the wailing if it was another one from Richmond... With that logic, how did Sheeds win 4 flags if Tiges were such a basket case eh.. eh.. he..he.. Go Bombers :-)

How about we try to recruit a good player from another club eg maybe ellis (hawks), Knights(crows) or Higgins(dogs). We need a skillful midfielder and it's not going to be easy in this draft thanks to GWS!
- Chris Steffen (posted 5/10/2011 11:46:13 AM)

- Tyler Thorne (posted 5/10/2011 11:47:23 AM)

We are Geelong, the greatest team of all!

It's good we are going for experienced youth in our coaching group, and although I was an avid fan of Harvs when he was with us, I don't think it would be a good idea for him to come back into the fold.

Good to get another assistant coach with inside knowledge about the best football team in Australia.
- Gordon Moss snr (posted 5/10/2011 12:16:53 PM)
I hope he lasts longer the the other one?

Good Luck Matthew Egan - welcome to the mighty Essendon Football Club. I'm surprised that we didn't replace McCartney with someone of similar experience,('though I have nothing against Matty Egan) just surprised, that's all. Where are things at with Harvey ?
- Mary Tovey (posted 5/10/2011 12:46:03 PM)
So it's official, we have cut our ties with Bendigo. On another note when is Harvey joining our coaching list.

Congrats on the job, can't wait to see the team in action in 2012 its going to be exciting!!!!. Also whats the word on Michael Hurley??? are we any closer to securing him cause the GWS deadline is getting close and i am one of many bomber fans who do not want to see him go :S

Give it up Noel, maybe you should be supporting Tigers. Sheeds was a legend. End of story.
- Rita Sharrock (posted 5/10/2011 1:24:19 PM)
End of an era at Bendigo. No Shannon, back to 2009 for them. Go Essendon Reserves and Seniors.
- al Catraz (posted 5/10/2011 1:58:21 PM)
Matthew's knowledge of VFL stand alone teams will also be of value for us. His experience of running the Geelong VFL and his assistant role with Chris Scott as well is excellent value for us. I've got an idea, Mark Harvey to coach Bendigo, and then Essendon Reserves.
- al Catraz (posted 5/10/2011 2:30:47 PM)
Always felt so sad for Matthew Egan. Looked like a talent as good as or better than Scarlett, but injury robbed him of a playing career. So happy he now has a new one as a coach...happier it's with us.
- Wesley Hull (posted 5/10/2011 2:52:14 PM)
On another Grant out so hope we get another coach aswell
- Kirk Geordie Mackintosh (posted 5/10/2011 2:55:47 PM)

Great we are recruiting all the right coaches . . . I just hope we recruit all the right players now!!! We really need to build that midfield dons !!!
- Sam Santos (posted 5/10/2011 3:19:06 PM)
Tigars a basket case after 5 flags from '67-'80? Sheeds new what success was and what had to be done to acheive it, unlike the last Richmond appointee Noel. Welcome to Matthew E.
- David Husk (posted 5/10/2011 4:24:43 PM)
Of course he is Rita, don't know why you think otherwise.. ?! I was having a go at those who think duds always came from Richmond.. Maybe I shouldn't bother,if the message was misunderstood... Barrack for Richmond??!! You've gotta be kidding... Go Bombers.. :-)
- Noel Shields (posted 5/10/2011 4:58:25 PM)
footy how many people like it
- Finn Macrossan (posted 5/10/2011 5:05:34 PM)
Should have moved Shannon Grant into this role instead I feel rather then losing him to another club.
- Dean Horton (posted 5/10/2011 5:16:29 PM)
Oh Yeah!!!! Thrilled to have this bloke. Massive wraps on him. All these blokes know which team is heading North. Good luck to Granty too. His impact on the younger players shouldn't be underestimated.
- Shane Warke (posted 5/10/2011 7:48:05 PM)
why would some one put we are Geelong on this page you no wot i say your talking rubbish who was the 1st team to done them in round 15 we did
- MARK JONES (posted 5/10/2011 10:07:28 PM)
No guarantees that brings success either Dave,Tim Watson came from a winning culture,Tom Hafey and Dick Reynolds did not,but the opposite was achieved in each case.. appears some do not give the previous coach ANY credit at all, which is a view and viewpoint of a horse racing with blinkers on...
- Noel Shields (posted 5/10/2011 10:14:10 PM)
Welcome Matthew to this mighty club of ours.
- Alan De Menezes (posted 5/10/2011 10:15:21 PM)

- Noel Shields (posted 5/10/2011 10:50:43 PM)
Welcome Matthew. I wish you all the best as you work with the Bombers to build a premiership team. Good luck! :) Angie
- Angeline Baron (posted 6/10/2011 12:23:32 AM)
I see Danyl Pearce might be on the market. Huge unfulfilled talent who has great skill and pace and he would be a good get if the bombers get him to work harf
- Andrew Leung (posted 6/10/2011 1:00:27 AM)
Welcome!!
- Chris Litchfield (posted 6/10/2011 10:04:56 AM)

Mark Harvey says he doesn't want to coach at Senior level but possibly will stay in football. Let's bring him back as an Assistant Coach.
