Essendon delist Anthony Long

Essendon Football Club has delisted injury-plagued defender Anthony Long this week ahead of today’s list lodgement deadline.

Long failed to play a senior game after being drafted to the club via selection 33 in the 2009 AFL draft after being struck down by a series of injuries.

Essendon general manager of football Paul Hamilton thanked Long for his efforts over the past two years.

“Unfortunately Anthony has been really unlucky in terms of his injuries over his time at the club but we wish to thank him for his contributions and wish him every success for the future,” Hamilton said.

There have been four changes to the primary list in preparation for next week’s AFL national draft following the delisting of Long and retirements of Mark Williams, Andrew Welsh and Darcy Daniher.

What a shame. It would have been good to see him play a bit but unfortunately it did not happen. All the very best Anthony.

I guess now it is clear that we will have 3 live picks. Are we any chance of picking Anthony up at the Rookie Draft?

A shame as he never got a chance to show his wares. However the right call has been made as you cannot have injury prone players on the list. Was Gumby in the gun??

Opens up opportunities for Anthony and must have a lot of potential being a 33 pick. Always sorry to see a young player come in and go out without getting a senior game. Shows that our under- performing senior players have to be realistic about the need to periodically make way for youngsters if the club is to succeed. But in the words of our champion 2012 midfielder (from the 2012 Bomber Mag): "the more we inquire, the less we resolve. Surely he is most likely to please himself that has no other inclination to regard."

Thanks for all you have given to the Club over the past two years, Anthony. We all wish you the best for your future. Angie

Re-rookie him perhaps?

bad luck Anthony. All the best for the future

Worst.... Decission.... EVER! Gumbleton played 22 games over five years! and poor Longy only 2 years, shame on you, how does Uncle Michael feel about this? you can't wait to draft Jake Long for he is too young, Anthony is an injuied proned kid, such shame and another better recruit a recycled player or else I'll be following the Bendigo team and EFC Reserves. go Bendigo! and Essendon Reserves!

Anthony could really play, but could never play, if you follow what i mean. saw a couple of "purple patches" from him that will always conjure thoughts of "what could have been". if the hammies stand up, consider for rookie spot.

Just looked at the Coach's profile, howcome on the Staff listing it says James Byrne is the Development Coach and in the Coach's Profile it says Dean Wallis? and is that the Byrne that played for Adelaide? and was he the one who Captained Geelong Reserves to the 2007 VFL Flag? and lastly Jesse from Williamstown is part of our club as well,, all done behind the scenes!

cam't miss what we never had ,, sorry but that's footy..
- Darren Pigott (posted 16/11/2011 3:25:35 PM)
unfortunate the way teams run now! but if you are not up to it from the get go they are quickly squeezed out. All the best for the future Anthony, you still have time on your side.

Very sad to hear, for both Anthony's sake and the Bombers. He's certainly one of those players whose departure could come back to bite us if he comes good. Still, I guess the med staff etc know their stuff.

I guess thats the harsh nature of running a football club. Would have liked to see the kid play, but I'm guess his hamstring injuries will not allow him to play
- Gerard Smith (posted 16/11/2011 3:55:56 PM)
now we got 3 picks in the AFL draft then we will delist Ricky Dyson for 1 selection in the pre season draft??
- Andrew Schiavon (posted 16/11/2011 4:13:13 PM)
Good luck Longy, I'm sure it wont be the the last we hear of you.
- Adrian Foster (posted 16/11/2011 4:19:40 PM)
I suspect that with three live picks we can now chase our inside mid, ruckman and promote Crameri. The new spot could be a real smokey, and I wouldn't be surprised if it is a mature age player either in the draft or PSD (IE: Little?). Long would be a good rookie option. As for "worst decision", he was also the last decision, proving they really had to think about it.
- Wesley Hull (posted 16/11/2011 4:20:20 PM)
Good bye Longy and good luck in the future. I'm sure we have not heard the last of you!
- Adrian Foster (posted 16/11/2011 4:22:53 PM)
A shame,we were all hoping eh..:-) All the best Anthony, hope you can play for Bendigo this year, and maybe a review 1n 12 mths time.. Go Bombers.. :-)

Another falls to the axe of injury, this is a hard game for hard players, but reality rules, we have our fair share of players unable to withstand the rigours of our modern game, when i played we trained for three hours, the finished at the pub for another hour, mind you we weren't that motivated, a bit different today, but in bygone days we had to pay to play, so every thing has altered a tad, the only consistant is our love of the game.
- Max Rodwell (posted 16/11/2011 4:57:56 PM)
First Darcy, now Longy ? And, of course Jay N. Guess having a history at the club can only be bad karma (unless your name is Watson or Fletcher). Hopefully you can still find a spot on the rookie list, Anthony, and go about your rehab. without pressure. And you too, Darcy.

Sorry to hear that news Anthony, bad luck with injuries. football is a tough industry. Good luck with your future, you have a lifetime ahead of you, whatever you choose to do with it.
- Gail Taylor (posted 16/11/2011 5:27:56 PM)
There would be about 15 other guys breathing a sigh of relief, sorry to see a young kid shot down like he was, major surgery on his hammies was never a good sign...

- Dave Davo (posted 16/11/2011 4:36:08 PM) What are you on about?

what are you thinking essendon??? silverlock and long now! :(
- Josh Moloney (posted 16/11/2011 7:15:16 PM)
What a sad day to find out Anthony Long has been delisted without ever playing a game. There is no sentiment in footy these days - as we have axed both a Long and a Daniher this pre-season. Let's hope we take the opportunity to rookie one or the other if we can. A fit Darcy would be very handy.
- Mary Tovey (posted 16/11/2011 9:39:29 PM)
It was Luke Ball or Anthony Long. Just like Rioli or Myers. Hard to swallow but on the other hand it was Rich or Hurley, Lucas or Melksham, Atley or Heppell
- chris castell (posted 16/11/2011 10:03:19 PM)
Would be great if he could be rookie drafted and given another chance to get his body right. If not, all the best to him. It's a shame he couldn't get on the park.
- Sam Willis (posted 16/11/2011 10:21:32 PM)
And to think we chose longy over young gun Christensen ,these are the things that keep you down the ladder. You need to make every post a winner from the draft as there is no other way up like GEELONG.
- Chris Steffen (posted 17/11/2011 12:11:00 AM)
Heartbreaking :(
- Vincent Berraud (posted 17/11/2011 5:58:45 AM)
There must still be issues with his body as I would retain Longy in front of a few older players. If we rookie list him, it will be a good sign.
- Brad Scarr (posted 17/11/2011 6:40:51 AM)
Chris, it was never Luke Ball or Long. Ball was taken 3 picks before Long. the carlisle or colyer picks would have been needed for Ball. and i'm damn happy with travis and jake on the list.
- Jason Hannigan (posted 17/11/2011 8:10:33 AM)
Mary, Darcy wasn't "axed", he retired. Good point, CC. Some you win, some you lose, occasionally you break even.
- alec shiffman (posted 17/11/2011 8:21:23 AM)
Maybe we should have delisted that injury-prone kid J. Hird way back when ?
- Michael Tovey (posted 17/11/2011 9:45:06 AM)
I'm hoping all these Midfielders, retired or delisted, arn't making way for another big man! We need mids!! Going too tall into games cost us, especially in the Elim. final against Carlton!!
- Chris Litchfield (posted 17/11/2011 10:16:23 AM)
all the best mate.
- William Clarke (posted 17/11/2011 10:50:37 AM)
its a shame
- MARK JONES (posted 17/11/2011 11:19:38 AM)
It is sad that you have been delisted Anthony, because apparently you can really play, however, seeing that you are still only 20, it is very possible that you will one day overcome your injury problems, and have another crack at making it in the AFL.
- Gordon Moss snr (posted 17/11/2011 12:16:08 PM)
Please don't draft Elliott Kavanagh.. after his major hamstring problems..would be asking for trouble
- Mark McLachlan (posted 17/11/2011 8:10:50 PM)
Longy, all the best for the future son, and take the lessons learned for your own development. There's FAR more to life than football, so go well and be true to yourself.
- Graeme Blore (posted 17/11/2011 10:09:50 PM)
A very sad day, dreams of what might have been to have another Long playing for Essendon. Some very poignant messages here, Daniher, Neagle and now Long gone, but none more so than Michael Tovey's thought provoking post.
- Rita Sharrock (posted 18/11/2011 1:11:47 AM)
Gumby's just had MORE back surgery, might be time to let him go, chronic back/hammies never get 100%, it's a business NOT a convalescence resort...
- Mark McLachlan (posted 18/11/2011 9:43:29 AM)
Rita & Michael, one huge difference was that Hird proved he could play..!!!
