Ah poor Neagle, he had so much talent.

This is not a huge surprise, and the club has given him multiple opportunities. Jay can now explore other avenues. Three retirements and four delistings has opened up space on our list. We may trade for players, but it is possible that we trade for draft picks, or at least deals which improve our drafting position.
Disappointing but he just isn't up to this level of footy. He he still plays vfl
I think we should draft well into this one, even if it is "shallow". Gems always appear. Consider some of our B&F's. Watson (pick 40) Hille (40) Jason Johnson (28) Zaharakis (24) Hird (79) Hardwick (87). More picks could get us some mature age also.
Disappointing for Neagle, he could of been anything if it wasn't for Knights poor coaching??? Jimmy will off load some list cloggers this time around, and i reckon there would be a couple of WA boys a bit nervous at the mo???
Sad Neagle just didn't quite make it. Some great skills if really put together. Show just how hard it is to become an elite footballer these days.
Very sad to hear, a son of an Essendon legend. I thought he would have had one last chance this year but it wasn't to be. I accept the Bombers are doing what they have to do. Good luck Jay, I loved you being a Bomber.
No delistings in the senior list yet? Guess the Bomber officials are keeping tight with the senior group of players since the new clubs will be having the bulk of picks in the draft this year again.
Had one chance to make it in rnd 1 about 2-3 years ago against the Cats, we were on top could of put the cats away, Jay marks 30 out dead in front on Harry Taylor, decided to play on and did his ankle, the beginning of the end for Jay.
Sad news. All the best for the future Jay and thanks for your contributions to the club.
Sad, but inevitable. Its not the end of your career, Jay. You just need to reignite your passion elsewhere. maybe follow in the old man's footsteps and head north.
Was always gonna happen, since it was his last chance and he didn't play a senior game, and rarely showed much at Bendigo. Wish him well, hope he can find his feet at another club.
I still think that in the right circumstances, Jay could turn the corner like Tom Hawkins. A shame.
So much talent, but a serious lack of commitment, what a waste.
Always sad to see a player with undoubted talent, but who just couldn't put it together regularly, have to go, especially a son of a former bombers star. Good luck Jay hope u make it back somewhere.
All the best in the future for Neagle , club made the mistake putting him back on the list this year.He has shown that talent isn't the issue , it's the preparation required to play AFL.
Sorry to see Jay go,would have loved to see him make the grade, as I think he has heaps of talent. Somehow just never got there. All the best Jay in whatever you do next!!!
New it was coming but sorry to see it so as this kid had heaps of talent, yet lacked the discipline to do the hard yards. All the best Jay!
poor jay. i read in lloyds book he was never fit enough and had way to many skin folds
probably a fair call... just didnt live up to he's potential i guess
Jay, thanks for all your efforts on and off the field.
I think it was only a matter of time before Jay was delisted.
Good on Hirdy for giving him a shot, but it sounds like Jay doesn't want to put in the hard work that he needs to put in.
delisting doesnt mean over and out mate, it is upto you.....
Not Happy EFC! You gave him the option to pull his finger out at the start of the year, he did it and worked hard all year, and was finally doing the things which he has had problems doing (chasing, pressure, team play, etc) and you delist him! Definitely had so much potential and was starting to pull it together. Very disappointed.
I'm disappointed to see you go. Wishing you all the best in whatever you choose to undertake.
Allowing for Fletch being on the veterans list stil at least 2 more to go from the primary list....
The Essendon Insider is taking a 'self-proclaimed' well deserved holiday for two weeks. Please look after EIT (Essendon Insider Temp) over the next fortnight. I know you'll all be on your best behaviour. I'll send you a postcard. Go Bombers!
If only I knew (second time this has happened), a non-functioning brain doesn't help...all the best Jay!
it appears it's more in the attitude rather than ability with Jay Neagle, not nice delisting anyone, but he may get lucky at another club if he really does want to play AFL
Have to agree with Matthew Byrnes - he did what was asked of him, played in 3 different positions all year and looks the fittest he has ever looked. We've had Gumbleton on the list for years and he hasn't played, yet Jay has worked his butt off for a position. I hope he gets picked up and finds the success and support he deserves with another club. I‘m disappointed he won’t be getting his chance at Essendon in 2012, especially with the way the ball is coming down the forward line these days.
Ray,it had nothing to do with Knights coaching.Always trying to find a small opening to give a punch. Diane
It takes enormous commitment and a single minded approach (plus talent)to make the grade in the AFL. I'm just sorry that it hasn't happened for Jay. His father was a legend here perhaps Jay lacked the self belief and grit to become a senior Player.
We gave him long enough to get his act together. Had so much talent but lacked work ethic!
A small minority will never accept the truth if it disagrees with their perception of reality. Jay had opportunities under three coaches over five seasons. He probably had the goods but not the delivery. Wish him well.
diane ray has a pointknights poor coaching has put essendon at least 2 year back we still wuold have huoli at essendon and he should have given jay more game time
Won't be your buddy Myers though Ray,he is doin' ok and should remain, just to annoy you...he he :-) Gumby will get another year imo,the right side of 23-24 years of age.. Has the x factor about him,if it all clicks for him.. if....
And I see a player recruited during MK's watch won the Crichton in his third season... you know that guy that kicked the winning goal in an Anzac Day game.. Didn't hear any boos from your side of the Bass Strait then... Cheers Champ, and send bob home will ya...jimmy needs his input for the draft picks.. :-) :-)
You put in,and improved the fitness Jay,well done with giving it your best.. Sorry it didn't work out,but you leave with all our best wishes.. All the very best young man ... :-) :-) ps.. has some similar traits to Vander, with attitude and not renowned for enjoying training... But was a big shaker in the public arena.. on game day,and Jay had that look about him as well, but low fitness base let him down, halving his opportunities imo...
wishing all the retirees & delisted players all the best for their futures. Thank You all.
james Hird should at less gave him a chance
oh well we get a good player to take he.s spot in the draft
Always sad to see a Son of a Gun not make it to our mighty club. I guess Jay gave it his best shot and it was noty good enough. All the best Jay for the future.
Thanx for the memeories, Jay. All the best for ur future endeavours.
The club stuck by him and in the finish he just was't good enough, having said that I know Jay gave it his all this year and I wish him good luck for the future.
EI, I hope you have a safe & happy, well deserved holiday, take care, cheers
Disappointing. After reading Lloydys book it sounded as if Jay was up against it by not working hard on his fitness until a couple of years into his career. By then he was too far behind the speed of the competition to make up the difference. Disappointing. Jay had something but had 4 years to show it. I always think back to late in the 3rd qu vs Geelong Rnd 2010 when Jay played on 35m out and what might've happened if he'd taken the kick and slotted the goal....
JAY I SEEN ALOT OF TALENT FROM YOU AND VERY SORRY TO SEE YOU GO. GOOD LUCK AND IM POSITIV E ANOTHER CLUB WILL HAVE FAITH IN YOU LIKE I DO ! ;-[
Dianne, you are wrong again??? It had everything to do with Knight's coaching,Neagle was lazy and not committed, and partied way to much,Knights should of done something about it from day one, instead of "PUSHING LEDGENS" out the door???
Lets just let the Knights period become a footnote in the history of this great club. To succeed we need to look forward, not back. I have every confidence that Jay's career is not yet done.
Noel ole buddy, just what have you done to "BOBBY" i haven't HIRD from him in ages??? Now Noel I'm surprised by your comments about drafting, I would of thought it would be pretty easy not to get a "TOP 10" pick wrong??? But Knights did it in 2007??? And whats more to the point was having Knights too be "TALKED INTO" talking HURLEY over YARRAN ??? MMMM I'm so glad the club "SEEN THE LIGHT" last year!!! Cheers Ray.
Cheers Marg and Joe, Its so good to see we have some supporters that know something about the "GAME" !!! lol
Who knows he may be picked up again, he did make more effort and put more in this year than any other. Hope he gets a go as he sure does have talent and we need another strong lead up forward.
Right Ray, it was all Knights' fault. And how about Crameri, Zaharakis and co? Maybe he coached them well and coached Neagle badly. Yes, that must be it ... he SELECTIVELY coached Neagle poorly. Is that it?
If it was Knights' fault WHY didn't Jay at least show he could get a kick with Bendigo, was never going to make AFL, very lucky to even get a game, if he wasn't the "son of a gun" he wouldn't have ever been drafted, redrafting him as a rookie was a massive mistake, could have cost us someone who could play, any player with ability should be able to show it under any coach, what did he show under the "super" coaching panel...absolutely nothing..thanx Knight for coaching Zaha into a club champion.!!!!
Would have liked him to succeed but the sad fact was that he was too slow for AFL footy. If he didn't mark the ball defenders could run off him too easily.
Luke and Mark, Zaka is blessed with "SPEED,SKILL AND COMMITTMENT" the current requirements for today's footballer, and would be very easy to "COACH" were as Neagle was not, therefore would be required to take a different approach to "COACHING" him???
IMO Knights "WASTED" 5 years development of all our players while he was in charge and obviously the "ESSENDON BOARD" thought the same at the end of last season???
... and if Sheedy had been firmer with Lovett he'd still be breaking the lines in an Essendon jumper, right, Ray? Why stop at Neagle being Knights' fault, hey? There are plenty of people around any club beside the senior coach to point the way to young players. Neagle just did not 'get it' for quite a while, when he did, it was too late. Past coaches and draft selections are always easy targets.
Yes Ray,bad mistake drafting Hurley over Yarran.. and MK stuffed up recruiting Zaha too,and a few others that Luke mentioned...yep Ray,you know plenty mate... but like the rest of us,you don't know everything... Shame the blue skies of that period with our Club, was not seen by you from the lovely Apple Isle..And Ray,the legends pushed out the door??!! It was proved, they were over the hill mate,Knight's fault too??!! :-)
the silent majority are behind you RAY. SHEEDS always said 2008-2011 would be our NEXT premiership window. but poor drafting, coaching and pushing legends out the door meant that window NEVER opened up for us. history now that can never be re-written by the rose colored glasses wearers. GO BOMBERS 2012!!!
Margaret you have to be joking about pushing legends out the door, Lucas was given a year past his time, couldn't find the ball, and Lloyd was offered a contract which would have him the highest paid player to play forward and mentor the young key forwards but he wanted to play FF or nowhere, he had accepted the AFL job well before he announced his retirement, loved them both, both were legends and paid extremely well, the loyalty was not reciprocated
Who recruited (recycled) Cole, Murphy, Allen, Alvey, Zantuck, Cupido who had failed at their previous clubs, instead of drafting youth, that's what put the club 5 years behind, someones ego..
Ray it looks like a couple of my posts have been rejected, we will have to agree to disagree on this one, as long as the future heads in the right direction we will all be happy. the past can't be altered but the future can be shaped, regards mate
"the silent majority are behind you RAY" - Bobby-Marg, how on EARTH would you know that?? Some may be wearing rose-coloured glasses, but others are looking back at history down the wrong end of a telescope. Mark McL put it perfectly.
There is no doubt that Knights made mistakes, but Sheedy in his last few years did more damage to our list than Knights ever did. I went through stages of being a huge Sheedy fan, but he did lose his way in his last few years, and that's why the club didn't renew his contract.
Spot on Gordon, I still admire Sheeds for what he did up until the last couple of years
Ray, have a real close look at who really sacked Knights..!!!!!
personnally believe we should be participating in trade week as cant see improvement in some senior players from this year. All the best to all delisted players and lets all look forward once again
Mark, Gordon, Kris, Luke and Noel. Well said, little generous with the Sheeds 'lost the plot' legacy being only a couple of years. Five too long closer to the mark. Raybie and the Fembot the self proclaimed experts, keep going down the same worn old path? Our 'next' window 2008 - 11, what a load of spin, and who believed it - the silent majority of course!
Good luck to those delisted & retired.
Thought / was expecting Taite & Tyson to kick on @ the bombers, oh well.
Wouldn't mind seeing Lovey back!!!
I totally agree with Matthew Byrnes. Jay Neagle remained our best prospect as a full forward. I also find it very sad that people continue to slanderously accuse him of not trying or being committed. A bad decision by the new regime. Best wishes and good luck, Jay.
Brad, thanks for adding your realistic comments to this little debate.
K Sheedy - 634 games 386 wins 4 premierships umpteen preseason cups. MK - 65 games 25 wins. ONYA brad, luke, gordon junior, baynie. NEVER let the FACTS get in the way of a good story guys!! Marg.
Time to stop living in the past (as a man?). You have threatened to go and join Sheeds at GWS, I reckon, on behalf of the vocal minority, that the time is right.
Marg, we all know that Sheedy did a lot of good coaching at various stages in his 27 years at Essendon, he did some good drafting, and he was very good at promoting our club. But Sheeds also did some very ordinary coaching at times, and some terrible drafting. Personally, I never thought MK was a fantastic coach overall, but he did have us playing some exciting, very attacking footy at times, and to be fair to him, he did inherit a very poor list from Sheeds.
Marg, I understand that you love Kev, but you aren't being realistic about his last few years at Essendon, when he recruited very badly, and wasn't coaching well, he didn't really even have a game plan. I think that you are looking back at Sheeds through rose coloured glasses, take them off and move on, they don't go well with your purple dress.
Not 1 person has disputed Sheedy's great contribution to the club or his ability as a coach, he is a Legend, have met him & love the man for what he did for footy, Margaret, take his last 3 years as an experienced coach & compare with Knight's 3 years as a rookie coach with no experience assistants, Don't be surprised if he is replaced at GWS in a very short time...!!!
