Hardingham commits to the club

Essendon Football Club is delighted to announce young defender Kyle Hardingham has signed a new two year contract extension.

General manager football operations Paul Hamilton said the club was extremely pleased to have secured Hardingham until at least the end of the 2013 season.

“Kyle has had a fantastic year and is really relishing the opportunity to play in defence,” Hamilton said

“He is a quality person to have around the club and we think he’ll play a big part in our future success.”

Hardingham, 23, was drafted to Essendon as a mature age recruit in the 2009 pre-season draft. He has played 28 senior games since arriving at Windy Hill.

“He has shown great resilience and worked extremely hard to get where he is today and I know everyone at Essendon is delighted he has committed to the club.”

Good move, but not sure defence is his best position.

That's good news, admire this guy immensely given his determination to prove himself in the context of being preferred to Barlow. And he has proven himself in spades!

A great pick up. Have enjoyed watching Kyle's leaps towards the ball and his run from the backline. Good luck, you deserve it, you've worked hard.

Seemed like such a left field pre-season draft selection, even though Fremantle tried to hide him. Now we know why. Think he will be even better next year...down back and up forward. Well done, Kyle.

Good to have this bloke tied to our club for the next two years at least, I really like his good vertical leap, which he uses so well to get into the air to mark or spoil.

Very pleasing to see him re-sign. He is developing into one of our most reliable defenders. Hopefully, over the long term, he will be as good a player as Michael Barlow who we overlooked to take Kyle. Kyle certainly has re-paid recruiters so far.

To be honest I questioned the logic of drafting Hardingham over Barlow, considering Barlow was training with Essendon, however Kyle has become an important part of the backline and I love the way he attacks the ball and fly's for everything. Great year Kyle and thank you for proving a lot of us wrong. He reminds me of David King x factor

The man the boys and I call 'Superman' great leap and hands! Great news!!

Once you get MORE confidence in your ability and judgement Hardy, you will be something to behold even more!! Think this guy will be a very valuable utility, roaming far and wide creating havoc for oppo players and coaches, once the side settles and more players learn more about the art of versatility... Watch out :-)

ripper

The quintessential quiet achiever for 2011. Slotted straight into the best 22. No credit from the media or from fans of other clubs. Great news to have him stay on for at least another 2 years.

This is great news. He is an integral part of our back line and, although not that big, he can handle himself! Good luck, Kyle, I look forward to seeing you over a long career at EFC.

Great news. One of the revelations of 2011 was Hardy being the second or third up in a spoiling role and getting very good pieces of the leather. Add to his agility and ground speed and we have a wonderful cog in the backline (who can go forward and take big grabs). Has probably buried the Barlow issue, too, and now he is settled contractually and on the ground I expect he will improve.

I'm wrapt! A gun signing EFC! Reminds me of the late 90s when Sheeds had enough of hearing the Bombers were marshmallow soft and went out and picked up tough nuts the like of Solomon, the two Johnnos and so on. Rugged formidable back line developing! Premiers in 2 years.

Yay 'Bomber' Hardingham !!!
- daniel stubbs (posted 6/10/2011 5:04:30 PM)
Good news. Better news would be if Essendon got very active during trade week instead of adopting its usual passive approach.

What is happening with Hurley's contract extension?
- Tony Gekas (posted 6/10/2011 6:51:24 PM)
Excellent, now let's stitch up Hurley!!!

Can we just get over the Barlow crap and move on Kyle is a GUN.
- ted big (posted 6/10/2011 8:35:25 PM)
what about HURLEYS CONTRACT cant afford for this contract talk to go on all through the season and then move to blacktown with sheeds well done hardingham a great season fromyou
- steve finch (posted 6/10/2011 9:49:18 PM)
have a good pre-season. get stuck into it. let hocking know that he has let us all down even if he is one of your leaders. well done on 2011
- Barney Sneddon (posted 7/10/2011 12:08:23 AM)
Good to hear this signing. Dissappointed that we will not be active in trade week. There are some good players around would have been good to get a Joosh Gibson or Burgone type when they were available. We should never shut the door on bettering our great team
- Wayne Haase (posted 7/10/2011 12:45:13 AM)
Dont know why some think,we have to be active in trade week. Personally,I think we have a good list.It just needs tweeking,we have excellent coaches to develope our list. Hird said they will be active at the national draft and will be looking for a quality midfielder.Think thats all we need.Diane
- Diane Trask (posted 7/10/2011 8:56:55 AM)
Thanks for resigning. I think hardingham is more of a josh gibson type defender maybe throw in some hardwick mongrel and he'll be perfect. I think people forget we had a chance at Rodan that is the biggest lose try and get pearce/boak/dangerfield/klucas/
- Jeddy Telescourt (posted 7/10/2011 9:16:04 AM)
Quality!
- Rick Lee (posted 7/10/2011 9:29:02 AM)
The Barlow issue is redundant because he and Kyle are entirely different types of players. One is an inside gatherer and ball distributor and the other a free running and high leaping flanker. Clearly it was felt we needed what Kyle has to offer, and maybe he has more "upside" to his game, looking ahead.
- Dennis Green (posted 7/10/2011 1:16:13 PM)
bomber !!!
- Nathan Williams (posted 7/10/2011 7:32:05 PM)
This is great news for the club. I look forward to seeing Kyle play some great games in 2012.

will never forget the excitement kyle showed when leaving the ground after we won in his first game...he's a ripper!
- Davor Stanic (posted 9/10/2011 2:27:44 PM)
Great to see Kyle sign up, v good season 2011, if you could gain some valuable speed for 2012 you would be a greater asset to the bombers !
