Monfries named in Australian squad

Essendon forward Angus Monfries has been rewarded for his 2011 season with selection in the Australian team for the upcoming International Rules Series.

24-year-old Monfries is the only Bomber player to be named in the side, led by former Western Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade.

The first Test will be played at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne on Friday October 28, with the second Test played at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast on Friday November 4.

Both matches will be broadcast nationally by Network Ten and simulcast into Ireland via TG4.

The squad will come together in Melbourne next week to prepare for the series, before travelling to the Gold Coast on Sunday October 30.

Both Test matches have been strongly supported respectively by the Victorian and Queensland State Governments and will be broadcast nationally by Network Ten.

The team includes:
Richard Douglas (Adelaide), James Frawley (Melbourne), Robbie Gray (Port Adelaide), Brad Green (Melbourne), Shaun Grigg (Richmond), James Kelly (Geelong), Jake King (Richmond), Ben McGlynn (Sydney), Trent McKenzie (Gold Coast), Stephen Mile (St Kilda), Angus Monfries (Essendon), Robin Nahas (Richmond), Mark Nicoski (West Coast), Mitch Robinson (Carlton), Liam Shiels (Hawthorn), Zac Smith (Gold Coast), Matthew Suckling (Hawthorn), Andrew Swallow (North Melbourne), Colin Sylvia (Melbourne), Jack Trengove (Melbourne), Bernie Vince (Adelaide), Callan Ward (GWS), David Wojcinski (Geelong) and Easton Wood (Western Bulldogs).

The 24-man squad was selected by Rodney Eade, assistant coaches Wayne Campbell and Andrew McLeod, Match Committee Member Brad Johnson and AFL Football Administrator Manager Rod Austin.

Well done. Just don't get injured. EI, is there any chance of getting a proper forum on this site?

good stuff angus. i heard essendon is going after caddy how good would that be. Would need to give something good, pick 19, jenkins to adelaide for something and give it to gold coast.

We can argue about who deserved it more or deserved it as well, but nothing can take away the fact that Angus has earned representitive selection. A great honor. Gongratulations, Gus. You do deserve it. Just a shame that Hurley, Fletcher, Watson, Zaharakis or Heppell aren't there with you.

Congratulations to Gus. I hope he does well and enjoys the experience. I expected to see Fletch in there as well as goal-keeper.

From the look of things this is an All Australian selection by default? Where are all the original nominees? Good experience for Gus though!

Good on you Angus. You are going to make a lot of your fans, especially the young Bomber girls so very happy with you being selected. Hope you have a great game and better still a great year ahead.

"ESSENDON is believed to have launched a bid to lure Gold Coast midfielder Josh Caddy back to his home state" Any Truth?

Congratulations - I guess? - Angus, and commiserations to Alan Richardson on missing out on the Saints role after making it down to the final 3. Poor guy must be heartbroken!

only 2 of these players would be in the top fifty in the league,it's a shame but who cares who wins, but go gus in your aussie debut

well done Angus good reward for a good season .

Should be a good experience Gus. Go well! On another note-it would be FANTASTIC for the Bombers to secure Josh Caddy. Give the Suns what they want - he will be perfect for us! I am hopeful we'll be very aggressive and get the deal done.
- Bryan Nolan (posted 16/10/2011 1:42:31 PM)
Looking forward to seeing Toovey, Caddy and Fevola at Essendon next year. Top 4 for sure
- chris castell (posted 16/10/2011 2:17:48 PM)
Just more confirmation of how little our players are regarded within the game, at Brownlow count, all-Australian selection and by the media in general. A straw poll of fans would probably have our list rated in the bottom few teams, which wouldn't be too wide of the mark. There's only one way to alter such perceptions, but only time will tell whether our guys are good enough to make this happen.
- Dennis Green (posted 16/10/2011 2:35:42 PM)
Well done Gus you have earned it. Am hoping we can do a deal with the Suns for Caddy, he is an outstanding player, pick 19 and Dyson, Hooker, or Jenkins should secure the deal, I'm sure a lot of Essendon fans want agree with me but the kid is worth getting and he wants to play with Essendon and more importantly wants to be close to his sick father.
- Rod Hooker (posted 16/10/2011 2:40:17 PM)
Still waiting for the news story 'Bombers snare Caddy!!'
- Brad Scarr (posted 16/10/2011 2:57:56 PM)
Nice one Gus! Enjoy your break and have a great pre-season. Cheers, Kerro

An update on Josh Caddy?
- al Catraz (posted 16/10/2011 9:09:59 PM)
Congratulations Gus, enjoy the game. We do well adapting to this form.... You are a solid player with good skills. Recognition of your great season.
- Gail Taylor (posted 17/10/2011 9:56:02 AM)
very lucky to be named hocking is our better player
- Dave Davo (posted 17/10/2011 10:14:56 AM)
Be good to get Caddy, but please do not put hooker up as mentioned. Dyson, gumbleton, Jenkins, no worries but not Hooker. He will be critical for defence, if fletch happened to get some sort of career ending injury next year we are only really left with Pears if hurls is to stay a key forward!!! Maybe put prismall, davey or spike up also!!!
- ian Cocking (posted 17/10/2011 1:36:17 PM)
chris castell, what drugs are you on ?toovey and fev at bomberland ... I DON'T THINK SO'
- Darren Pigott (posted 17/10/2011 1:45:18 PM)
Dudded in trade week yet again.
- alec shiffman (posted 17/10/2011 2:02:42 PM)
Essendon! What a let down... No Caddy. Is this a sign of things to come? should have given up Melksham and Gumby! You people must think Essnedon has a great list? We are not going to win a Premiership with some of these blokes so....
- Michael Hanna (posted 17/10/2011 2:08:07 PM)
Two years in a row that we haven't done anything in the draft. I wonder if it will come to bite us on our backsides in a few years time? Any thoughts?
- John Hartman (posted 17/10/2011 2:27:54 PM)
It was trade week, John, the draft is yet to come. The Bombers tried for Caddy but came up short, or GCS wanted more than we were prepared to offer. I think Hirdy and co have indicated all along that he'd rather develop our list and get newcomers through the draft.
- Andrew Howard (posted 17/10/2011 2:42:09 PM)
Michael Hanna,I realise we would have to give up some reasonable players or picks, but I can't believe you would include Jake Melksham,I think Jake has shown us in the last two years that he will be a very good long term player for us and I suspect he has leadership written all over him,I also suspect that he is very highly regarded by the coaching panel.Josh Caddy may be a good player, but who knows. Why did he only play 2 games this year.
- Bill Carbis (posted 17/10/2011 3:08:17 PM)
well done Gus, just don't get injured. I personally am not a fan of this hybrid rules game, but good luck Go Dons! and Carn the Aussies!
- Rowan Gerecke (posted 17/10/2011 3:39:14 PM)
Your poorest effort yet Davo. Don't mind your comments if they are football relevant. That is just low dude. Not picking a 'best' team here. Players would make themselves available, approved by respective club, as all clubs should be represented, and selected. Why even go there?
- Brad Scarr (posted 17/10/2011 6:43:24 PM)
good on ya angus hope you go well
- Tom Spong (posted 17/10/2011 8:38:17 PM)
what about Fletch? He should have been named at half back as he has done in the past. No one, but NO ONE, can do what he does. Congrats to Angus for being the only Bomber player chosen. You deserve it.
- Lyn Robeson (posted 17/10/2011 10:05:59 PM)
Well done Gus! This is a fantastic opportunity for players to expand their horizons in a gonglomerate team experience. I'm sure you'll come away with some great memories to add further sparkle to your already shining AFL career. :) Have fun! (Must get myself a ticket!) Angie
- Angeline Baron (posted 18/10/2011 8:55:34 AM)
Lyn, I believe Gadget was unavailable. He is by far the best goalie we have ever had in this game.
- alec shiffman (posted 18/10/2011 1:35:33 PM)
Have tickets! Can't wait! Angie :)
