An impressive crowd of over 2000 fans witnessed a thrilling finish to the ‘Australia Day Goes GLoBALL’ cricket showdown today between the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades at Windy Hill.
Despite accumulating an impressive 15 runs in the final two overs, the Renegades failed to match the calibre of talent dished up by the Stars who sealed victory with the help of Kyle Hardingham, Jake Carlisle, Essendon chairman David Evans and late inclusion Paul Hamilton.
In the final two overs of the game, Essendon stars David Myers and Henry Slattery had to shoulder the responsibility of a potential Renegades win, chasing 20 runs for victory, but fell short.
Stars player Matthew Wade wowed the crowd as he hit a number of impressive sixes leading the Stars to an eventual victory, showing why he was recently named in the Australian Twenty20 team.
Jake Carlisle was the standout performer for the Bombers, impressing the vocal crowd with his fast-paced bowling and attack.
Kyle Hardingham silenced Essendon team mate Michael Hibberd after he disputed the forward’s cricket abilities via Twitter during the week, with Hardingham smashing Hibberd for two sixes to the crowd’s delight.
Some power hitting from Rob Quiney and Clint McKay helped pushed the Stars to a total of 88 runs for the day.
Young gun Ryan Carters from the Melbourne Renegades accumulated runs from big boundary hits alongside Bombers star Ben Howlett, who also delivered handy runs to add to the Renegades tally.
Renegades bowler Jayde Herrick delivered where it counted, keeping the Stars batsmen quiet in his over.
Captain of the victorious Stars team Matthew Wade said he was pleased to have guided his side to victory on Australia Day.
“Today was a great way to celebrate Australia Day and in bringing awareness to the GLoBALL program as well as raising important funds for the Cancer Council,” Wade said.
Essendon star David Myers, who led the Renegades side for the day, also acknowledged the Australia Day festivities.
“Sport is a great way to bring people together and it was fantastic to see the crowd get behind both Essendon and the Melbourne Stars and Renegades for the GLoBALL program,” Myers said.
“Today was a terrific opportunity for all fans to head to Windy Hill and celebrate Australia Day with a little bit of cricket in between.”
Launched in 2009, the GLoBALL program is a joint initiative run by the Essendon Football Club and Cricket Victoria with the aim to assist international students and new migrants settle into life in Australia.

Had a fantastic time at Windy Hill, thanks to all the players and staff for a great day!
Sat right in front of the woman who was doing the scoring to start with, were all the wickets counted early on for the Renegades, dont think so.Wade played well, but wonder if the Renegades had at least one top player like the Stars,we would have easily won.Put in Finch or even Nannes,Stars gone.Stars team to lopsided. My god, I sound like Bobby.Diane
Now for the upside, for all those that wernt there.I took my grandkids today, hoping to get them into cricket and to change my granddaughter from carlton to essendon.I have taken them both to a few renegades games to get them into cricket, especially grandaughter Kiara who hated cricket. After the first bigbash, she couldnt wait to go to the second.Today they were both excited. Before the game, they had activities for kids of all ages. They handed out soft cricketballs with renegades and stars writton on the ball.Diane
During the match, the club had two huge essendon beach balls blown up.They were thrown into the crowd and encouraged by all,to hit to the next person like they do at the cricket, but no security guard to take it off them.Diane
Many times, the ball went onto the ground but was always thrown back.At one stage,a renegades player caught the ball.He turned around to the hundreds off kids, his hand to his ear to say, what did you say!I cannot hear you.Allthe kids yelled at the top of their voice,me,throw it to me.He thought he would kick it and got nowhere. He grabbed the ball, ran to the gate which was a fair way up,went through the gate and went up the stairs into the grandstand.Diane
He went and kicked the ball into the crowd, and didnt the kids love it.To me this was what the day was about. After the game,my grandkids went and got their autographs on their balls.Hopefully after today my granddaughter will be an essendon supporter.I know she is a renegades, that was easy.Best time had by all.The Essendon football club should be congratulated on a wonderful day.Days like this is what gets our kids into sport and to love it.I thankyou.Diane
I was there, and I got to throw the ball back. I can't belive no-one took notice of that. Uh well, it was a great game. Great preformance from both teams. Pitty my cousin Alex wasn't there.
It was a great day for the kids but it was also a great day for the big kids like me. So good to catch up with fellow supporters and put faces to names. Nice warm up to the footy season.
Great day Diane, hope Kiara moves over to Essendon. Keep at it, definitely worth the try. Cheers Gail
