New development coach James Byrne says the playing group's hunger for continued improvement on the field is an exciting sign for the club.
Byrne praised the efforts of the playing group in embracing the fitness program put forward by new high performance manager Dean Robinson.
“The players have trained really hard and to their credit, have put in a really good six weeks which has continued since they returned from the Christmas break,” he said.
“It is important we continue to drive a culture within the footy club that the players have high expectations to do good things and strive to achieve.”
The former Adelaide player, who retired at the end of the 2008 season to pursue a career in stockbroking, said he was excited to return to football in a coaching capacity.
“It has been fantastic getting back in to footy coming from a completely different industry in finance. Obviously I have had a heavy involvement in footy previously, but it is good to be back in this environment.”

Byrne, who joined the club’s development program in November, believes the hard work on the training track during the pre-season is already starting to pay off for the Bombers.
“One thing I have noticed in my time with the playing group is that they have been really hungry,” Byrne said.
“They are training really hard at the moment and continuing to put the things in place to improve which is a good thing.
“We have noticed as a coaching group how much they want to do - they keep looking for work which shows they are very keen and for us as coaches that is exactly what you want,” he said.

Hard work will always pay off. Cannot wait to see the tangible results now.
"Hard work pays off in the future, Laziness pays off now"..sorry couldn't help myself, saw it on a T Shirt the other day. hee hee..GO DONS!
Speaking of healthy footy culture, recent research at the School of Sport and Exercise Science at Victoria University testing the shock absorbing ability of a range of “padded” helmets involved an artificial head with internal sensors that measured the shock absorption of the helmets during drop-tests simulating the impact energy likely to produce a concussion. The helmet likely to reduce the risk of head injury had the thickest padding and foam density. Our club should lead lobbying for this as an AFL-wide policy.
the 3 year holiday is now well and truly over. the premiership window opens NOW.
Bob, you are right, but sometimes it takes a little longer to pick a window lock, especially if it's a bit rusted or hasn't been in good nick. I'm sure Hirdy has plenty of WD40 though.
Santa got the I-pad or new lappy Wes?
Have the boys down at the moment, learning to surf among other activities. Took Daniel on in a 100 and 400mtr run in front of the cricket club last Saturday. Whipped by a 12 y/o. Will act my age from now on! Bit humbling.
Brad, a combination of a caring wife and 2 kids who begrudgingly let Dad use their laptops. Get mine back next week. Good to see your boys experiencing the deep south. As for acting your age, ran my first laps for the pre-season last week and every possible niggle in my body dropped by to say hello. One day I'll learn...No Wesley, you will not play for Essendon...your time has been and gone.
Great stuff Wes! Good to have you up and active, on the lappy and the track. Last goal I kicked was the night at Cazalys watching your boys. Drilled it from 20 - 25 out with a booming drop punt (that somehow just cleared the pack of kids in the goalsquare).
(The lights were turned off by then Mr.C.) BUT, I was moving as smoothly as a part time champion ruckman.
Shame the lights did go out Brad... once in the rhythm of the s-m-o-o-t-h PTCR game plan, the record created (when the purple jumper was in it's prime, one evening in a certain lounge room out Oakleigh way..) long ago might have been challenged, maybe broken like the corner lamp shade that night..
(Some text taken from the OFC past player tales yearbook 1986)
Bradley, lumbering ruckmen, part time or not,do not move smoothly, and I've always thought that the word "champion" is more often than not mis used. :-) Go Dons
Of course, if Brad can recall my three goals on the run in the pre-match warm-up at the other end, I could prrrooobbbabbbly remember his stunning goal at the northern end into a stiff breeze.
Wes,bribery, extortion, have you no shame???. Unless there is photographic proof both claims remain in doubt. :-) :-)
I think they have called our bluff Wes. Those stories we concocted in the bar have been exposed. As you stated mate - the dream is over for us both. Even with the #1 jumper up for grabs!
Geez Brad, you mean to say I've been blowing up all these balloons for nuthhhing... he he..torrkking fffuuuny, the balloon I was finishing orrff deflated and I ssoorta swaallowwed all ttthe air...A room full of Red & Black balloons to celebrate our two new part time champion speedsters on the part time emergency rookie list..What a waste… I'm a little deflated myself,my dream of your dream is over... sniff.. Go Bombers..!!!
Dear Alan,Happy 21st on the 21st,sorry Happy Birthday on the 21st,hope you are really enjoying the belated celebrations with Champ back home where he belongs... :-)
Errr, you interested in a "Room Full Of Black & Red Balloons" (not Roses Bill..) Al ?!! :-) :-)
