Essendon players took some time on the second day of their recent Community Camp to the Goldfields region to provide one young Castlemaine resident with the opportunity of a lifetime.
Watch the Bombers having a kick with young Sam here on Bomber TV →
Six year old Sam Kennedy won a competition through the local paper, the Castlemaine Mail, giving him the chance to mingle with his favourite football stars.
The young Bombers fan had breakfast with the players before heading out on the oval at Castlemaine Football and Netball Club for a kick of the footy.
As part of the experience Essendon duo Angus Monfries and Stewart Crameri gave Sam some private coaching on how to best improve his skills.

Love that photo! Nice hand position on the ball, head over it, good posture, concentrating on his mechanism, concentrating... What would Stewie and Angus have suggested...? Stewie: "Right, now focus on a spot between the sticks, fifteen rows back, and aim for that" (?). Angus: "Right, now run sideways, embarrass a few blokes and once you are in an impossible position, go the banana" (?). Stewie&Angus: "Then celebrate!" Will we see young Sam's name again in 12 years...

Young Sam, what a lucky young man you are, i wish i could just get the chance to talk to a couple of players. The best thing that has happened to me was i was picked to help hold the banner for Fletch's 300th game at the Gabba, something i'll never forget.
We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting - till the end -
We are the champions -
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions - of the world - Kaz.T.
All preseason we have heared very little of the training sessions, which in this case is great, if we hear nothing, then we know every thing is ok, we only hear about the players who have problems, the rest are growing stronger, but we have a few who will really help our cause, once we get them back on track, maybe it's our turn for a big grin from the football god.
God love the kid. I was the same age when a relative by the name of Geoff Blethyn showed me around the Windy Hill change rooms, where I met my two (other) idols, Neville Fields and Don McKenzie. 'Nifty' even shared his cracker biscuits with me - buttered, with vegemite!
Can only imagine how elated Sam would've been. What a treat. He'll remember that for the rest of his life.
Nice story, Dennis G. Do you still have the crackers? They might be worth something on e-Bay! ;-) As far as my memory goes, Geoff must have been one of the last players to wear glasses while playing? Anyone?
Tony Southcombe Of Carlton maybe Kris.. :-) I though Hutchy, with his beautiful sincere eyes, having a chat to a kid at Primary School ensured I would always be a Bomber for life,as well as nervously asking the Great John C for his autograph in the same DG Rooms..Dennis had it made with Biggles in the family.. he he he... Don't think you'll ever change Clubs Den.. :-) :-) :-)
Stick with us little Sam K,you'll always be grateful you did.. Go You Mighty Bombers!!!
WELL DONE, Noel!!! I was waiting for Bobby Dee to claim it! I guess 1977 when he, err Southcombe, played was around the time contacts became more common. I can't imagine anything after than. (Side note - no sign of the DVD, mate, if it has been launched, but I can wait.)
Noel, my lifelong love for EFC was instilled from my late Father. Dad adored Coleman, Dick Reynolds and Hutchy, and for most of my childhood we hardly missed a game, cramped together (all 7 children) in Dad's array of Holden panel vans and wagons, our floggers and flags hanging out the windows. Change clubs ever? Not the slightest chance! Kris, it's doubtful anyone since Geoff has worn those big black specs of his. Remember when the police horse slobbered all over them, I think when he kicked his ton...?
What memories to have Dennis...Bomber for life, just like Dad :-) The one's who whine about the smallest prob, just wouldn't know our level of passion for the Club, the History and all those "Magnificent Men" who have played for us... :-)
After my post, checked the records Kris, and as Dennis states,Geoff would probably be the last... Tony only played the one season in '77,sure Geoff played on after that, strangely ending up at the same Club... The Blues..!The DVD copy Kris has not been sent, trying to compile a CD to go with it,you will be happy one day to play and enjoy it!! Cheers All :-) :-) :-)
Love these stories, Dennis G. Thanks for another Den-mem-gem!! I think the source of the slobber was the full-back!
I think you are still correct, Noel. Blethyn retired in 1976 according to the past Player profiles. Then he went to S.A. I can wait for quality, Noel!
Thanks Kris for the update, thought Geoff played a few at the Blues, but obviously not.. Goes to show "often" we need the back up of the written word.. he he.. Go Bombers.. Kaizen eh Kris :-) :-)
Wasn't that Bobby Dee Kris, who had a few hits..err.. "The Lie,Have A Thousand Names" and "Take Good Care Of My Margie" and "Walkin',Walkin' With My Kazzie"?.. or was it Bobby Vee "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes" and "Take Good Care Of My Baby" and... Maybe Bill can help... Go Bombers :-) :-)
