Video: Ladson enjoying new role at Bombers

Essendon development coach Rick Ladson says he is enjoying his new role at the Bombers following his departure from Hawthorn at the end of the 2011 season.

Ladson, who will play a key role in the Jack Jones Development Program alongside James Byrne and Hayden Skipworth, hopes to have a strong impact in his first year as part of the coaching panel.

“I think I can bring some pretty good leadership qualities and hopefully the younger guys will look up to that,” Ladson said.

“I’m really starting to get to know the guys and they have been fantastic and are all training really hard.

“In the role that I have as development coach and playing in the VFL side, I will hopefully build up a strong relationship with the younger guys on the weekend and then with the senior guys during the week.”

After a complete overhaul of the coaching panel before last season, just three additions have been made for 2012 with Ladson, Matt Egan and James Byrne joining senior coach James Hird, Mark Thompson, Simon Goodwin and Sean Wellman.

“They (coaching panel) have been really good, and they are a great bunch of guys with plenty of experience,” Ladson said.

“I have been working pretty close with Sean Wellman and he has been looking after me so that has worked out well.”

Meanwhile, Ladson is confident Essendon’s off-season recruits are settling into the club well and coping with the demanding pre-season training regime put forward to them.

“They are fantastic, they do what they are told, and they are working so hard and eager to make an impact upon the group.”

Well Rick Laddy, sounds as though his heart is in the right place. He should bring some good stuff from his Hawks experience. Helping to settle & mentor the new chums is a great move. Give it your best Laddy, & welcome to the Black & Red Machine.

I was just having another look at the profiles of our new recruits. I hadn't noticed before that Jackson Merrett is only 1 cm shorter than Nick O'Brien but weighs 21kgs less. In fact he's our lightest player being 2kgs lighter than Alwyn Davey and Travis Colyer. Elliott Kavanagh is 8cms taller than Leroy but they are the same weight.

Does anyone know much about how Luke Davis is developing? At 190cm, 92kgs and 19 yrs, he is a big unit. I didn't see much of him in the VFL last year so would be keen if anyone could provide an insight.
