O’Brien, who was drafted at selection 59, said developing positive working relationships with the team and coaching panel was vital to his overall football development.
“I guess when you walk in to the club, the people there you still really do look up to and idolise but you have to quickly separate that because they’re the people that will be teaching and mentoring you,” O’Brien said
“You do have to start developing working relationships, so I am definitely looking forward to building on that and getting stuck in to it. It’s been great working with the team and coaches so far.”
The tall 18-year-old, who promises to be an exciting, composed forward with an excellent left foot kick said he was focused on settling in to life at Windy Hill with the other new recruits over the pre-season campaign .
“We’re going to focus on the pre-season first and from there, I just want to play my best football at whatever level that may be,” O'Brien said.
“I would obviously love to play senior level football next year, but there is a lot of work to do before that so for now, I’m just excited to be amongst it and training during the pre-season.
“Our time here so far has been great. We’re all settling in and meeting everyone. It’s all very exciting and I’m thrilled to be a part of the club.”

Welcome Nick, like your attitude. Reality is that there are some youngsters from last year- Browne, Ross, Steinberg, Davis who have built themselves up for a go at seniors this year. But you never know...it's always a question of how soon you can create that wormhole through to (and gain lessons from) the alternate universe in which you are already a champion.
I see Nick as a very interesting prospect, because even though he isn't quite tall enough to regularly play at full forward or centre half forward, he could play the leading forward role well, with his strong marking and good kicking. Also, his beep test results are very good, so he might be another one of those players who can be rotated through the midfield, where his big engine and strong body would help him win the ball, and he will get even stronger with Dean Robinson advising him.
Head screwed on. Great. Hope he stays with us as he sounds like a solid lad.
We've got three high quality boys this year, and they can obviously play footy too!
Very impressive young lad and from his highlights looks like we may have found a great key goal kicking forward for the future who not only has goal sense but can pinpoint a fellow team mate in a better position. A ripper!
and we are thrilled to have you here Nick. Be patient, work hard. Looking forward to watching you play. Welcome.
Has that "Daniher, country lad attitude" and although not tall enough for a key possie, might surprise like a Copping/Crameri/Hardingham/Monfries type, challenging taller ones for a grab and a goal.... :-)
EI? Any reason why the "
Don‘t Miss Your Chance To Meet….Paddy Ryder.." forum was removed ???
Nobody attended? Some did? Interested in any opinions,if any, after the event.. Cheers :-)
Has leader written all over him this kid. Get some muscle on those noodles and i think he will be a gun. a big part of this game is played between the ears and he seems to have a maturity beyond his years. Good luck Nick.
My wish before draft day was to pick up kids who could kick,it looks like Nick has a very good left foot.Welcome Nick and may the footy gods be with you.
Best of luck Nick get out on the feild and kick some goals:) Well done
