Zaharakis wins first Crichton Medal

Essendon young gun David Zaharakis has capped off an impressive individual season by being awarded the 2011 Crichton Medal.

In front of more than 1300 guests at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre this evening, Zaharakis finished the count with 332 votes, ahead of second-placed Brent Stanton who finished with 313 votes, and third-placed Michael Hurley on 292 votes.

In only his third AFL season, Zaharakis stood up to the challenge of leading a young midfield in the absence of some of the side’s more experience campaigners who battled with injury during the course of the season.

The 21-year-old played every game this season, polling votes in 15 of Essendon’s 23 games. It is the first time Zaharakis has won the award.

Zaharakis’ best performance for the year came in Round 8 against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba where he collected 25 disposals, kicked four goals and laid six tackles in a stand out performance. He polled three Brownlow votes for the match.

Essendon coach James Hird said the award was a fitting recognition for Zaharakis’ solid season.

“David has had an outstanding year this season and has developed into a really important player for the team,” Hird said.

“David was able to spend more time through the midfield this year and, to his credit, made the most of every opportunity.

“He has an incredible work ethic and an abundance of talent and to have a Crichton medal to his name after only three seasons at the club is a sign of things to come.”

Zaharakis was drafted to Essendon via selection 23 in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft. Since his debut in 2009, Zaharakis has played 53 games and kicked 57 goals.

David Zaharakis 332

Congratulations to David. He's had a terrific year, improving all the time. He'll get better with more time in the midfield too. Congratulations also to Stants for another fabulous season. He is maligned by idiots but has proven again how valuable he is to the Bombers.

Well done Zaka, with this one in the bag already, you might just reach the great one Jimmy Hird with 5 by the time you wind up your long career with the Dons. Now I`m even prouder to wear the number 11 on my back. Congratulations to Stants and Hurls aswell.

Well done David. What an achievement it must be for this boy who as a kid barracked for Essendon, now plays for them and finally wins the ultimate award at the club. Only thin better would be a Premiership medal around his neck and that is not far away. So happy for him. Nice to see Stants finish a close second too. All you knockers....just look at the scoreboard.
- Alan De Menezes (posted 8/10/2011 12:21:27 AM)

Wonderful reward for young David, and Brent was a standout too this year.. As a few on the list have matured, and improved their fitness base, rewards for their dedication to developing their careers should be more forthcoming. How it has always been, and how it will always remain,in my observations throughout my Essendon Love Affair... We could all write "our" Books, couldn't we :-) Go You Mighty Bombers in 2012 :-)
- Noel Shields (posted 8/10/2011 12:45:29 AM)

Congratulations David! It was brilliant to witness you win the Crichton Medal, you have had a wonderful year and are a totally deserving winner! Congratulations also to runners up Brent Stanton and Michael Hurley and all the award winners on the night. We have an exciting future with this crop of players. Farewell and good luck to Andrew Welsh. What a total clubman you are and will always be. Thank you Essendon for a wonderful night.

- irene barnes (posted 8/10/2011 7:49:10 AM)
Well done David! The top 3 was pretty much how I called it, so glad there were no surprises. What is scary for opposition teams is there is plenty more improvement to come from Zaharakis, Hurley, Stanton.
- Daisy Graham (posted 8/10/2011 8:44:25 AM)
congratulations David & Brent on a fantastic result! Both of you have played your hearts out this year & are worthy of this acknowledgement. I hope this result will finally shut the Stants knockers up & realise what high esteem the club holds him in!!!
- Tess Boyle (posted 8/10/2011 9:02:26 AM)
Zakka, YOU STAR! And to Brent Stanton, to come R/U after such a turbulent year, it speaks volumes of your caricature! Well done to you both!

- Gail Taylor (posted 8/10/2011 9:48:17 AM)
Congratulations, Zaha! For a boy who barracked for Essendon as a child, it must be very rewarding to receive this medal for all the hard work. Also congrats to Stants, who gives his all every time he dons the jumper. All the awards were fitting and I am proud of them all.
- Joan Hill (posted 8/10/2011 9:54:05 AM)
Congratulations to all the medal winners well deserved but a special mention to my favorite player Stewart Crameri, keep up the good work that you started in 2010 and 2011 will be very rewarding for you.

Fantastic reward for class and consistency Zakka, with much, much more to come. Congratulations! You've come a long way since that fantastic photo of you as a little tacker at your hero Lloydie's feet. Now you're the hero mate!
- Graham Flynn (posted 8/10/2011 10:27:07 AM)
Congrats Zacca. Spoke to many players and they all said the same thing. Hurley is not going anywhere. To Paddy Ryders girlfriend who said she would read todays comments. It qas really nice meeting you,and for you to take the time to spend half an hour talking to me was really nice. Cannot remember her name and I am sorry for that but you were so nice, she said she doesnt read the post here but said Paddy doesSo this is why we have to be very mindful of what we say. Diane
- Diane Trask (posted 8/10/2011 10:53:00 AM)
All class, the number 11; however, I think Brent Stanton has been extremely unlucky to miss yet again. One of the few who stood up for us in the elimination final, and carried injuries early in the season. I hope his time comes.
- Dennis Green (posted 8/10/2011 11:08:47 AM)
Well done, Zaka. You will now be remembered for more than one stupendous kick on ANZAC Day! A very worthy group at the top of the voting.
- Kris Bayne (posted 8/10/2011 11:19:28 AM)
Congratulation to Zakka, and all of the others who finished in the top 10, and double congratulations to the six guys who also got another award. The way Zakka has bulked up, and become a much better player than he was two years ago, shows why we need patience with young players.
- Gordon Moss snr (posted 8/10/2011 12:56:26 PM)
CONGRATULATIONS David Zaharakis on winning the Crichton Medal. Similarly, Brent Stanton standing up in the face of adversity and Michael Hurley playing on with injury. CONGRATULATIONS Andrew Welsh on a fine career, displaying loyalty, commitment and humour! CONGRATULATIONS Matthew Egan on appointment to assistant coach. A good week ESSENDON.

Congratulations to all the winners.Cried when Welshy gave his speech. Paddy Ryder, you have a lovely girlfriend, she also said that he reads these posts. This is why we have to be very minful of what we write.Diane
- Diane Trask (posted 8/10/2011 1:46:01 PM)
Congrats Zaka on winning the medal. Well deserved. As well congrats to all the top ten players. The order was not unexpected given the injuries to some. Well done Fletch for coming 6th. What a man. Stewart Crameri deserved his rewards along with Heppell, Stanton and Hurley. I wonder whether Jobe would have won if he had played in more games? Zak played in all 23 games and justly deserved his Crichton Medal as the fairest and best at Bomberland.
- Robert Murray (posted 8/10/2011 1:49:11 PM)
Well done Zaka, upwards on onwards towards the elite midfielder!

ZAKKKAAA!! Well done Zaka on winning the best and fairest, well deserved mate. Your an exciting player to watch and I'm sure there is better things to come! I was a bit surprised dyson polled seventh I think he was a bit hard done by the essendon judges, he should have been at least be in the top three.
- Adrian Reynolds (posted 8/10/2011 7:31:14 PM)
Enjoy your holiday EI. There will be some people who will test the temper of the temp, but I'm sure you have told him, (or her) not to publish their comments.

- Dyanne Cox (posted 9/10/2011 11:04:52 AM)
EIT - EI definitely deserves his holiday. He has to be jury and judge on so many posts and it must be hard making the call on which ones to post and which ones not. You are going to find that out in the next two weeks EIT....lol. All the very best.
- Alan De Menezes (posted 9/10/2011 2:59:09 PM)
Congratulations David, on a stellar YEAR. Let's build for 2012, and beyond......Go Bombers.

Please EFC put on Bomber TV the speech made by Andrew Welsh, it was one of the most moving and emotional speeches I have heard, the speech was made as Andrew thanked all concerned at the Crighton Medal count on Friday. I want all our supporters to hear it, good luck Andrew
- Gwenda Warfe (posted 9/10/2011 6:02:50 PM)
Congrats Zaka! Was a great night, will be attending again next year for sure.
- Michael Neal (posted 9/10/2011 8:10:49 PM)
Congrats Zaka on a well deserved win!!! Baynie, how did your boy go??? I didn't see him finish in the top 10 of the Crichton Medal count??? And i never seen his name as the most "IMPROVED" player as "YOU" predicted??? Maybe we might see his name during "TRADE WEEK" as i predicted???
- Ray Brough (posted 10/10/2011 9:17:55 AM)
Couldn't agree more Alan De Menezes. Should be a fun two weeks!
- Essendon Insider Temp (posted 10/10/2011 9:59:32 AM)
Does Essendon officials ovoid trade-week because they are not sure how to do it? like a kid that pretends to be sick instead of going to swim carnivals because he can't swim. Why do we always fail to bring in a key big name player that would advance the team as Collingwood so successfully do. We desperately need some A-grade players, midfielders the most.
- Michael Walters (posted 10/10/2011 10:02:26 AM)
Is Andrews speech, going to be put up on bombertv,EIT. If not,it needs to be.Gwenda,I so agree with you. Everyone needs to hear his speech. It sits behind,Rama's speech.Diane
- Diane Trask (posted 10/10/2011 10:46:04 AM)
avoid sorry, typing too fast.
- Michael Walters (posted 10/10/2011 12:01:56 PM)
Disappointed to hear that the club will take a siesta during trade week. Saints might be offloading Peake, and he would be a handy acquisition. P'raps Jay could have had some currency as a tradee, but that's water under the bridge now.
- alec shiffman (posted 10/10/2011 12:17:05 PM)
I thought Ben Howlett had a better year than that in terms of consistency and reliability and keeping your body right. Just goes to show how competitive it is. Fantastic for Zaks. Not that I pay much attention to Mike Sheean, but thought he could have featured between 35-50 in the comp.
- Joel Alexis (posted 10/10/2011 12:33:08 PM)
A glaring reason why we only finished 8th. We didn't end up with any of our young key defenders in the top 10 of our b & f. Hooks, Peares and Carlisle all gotta get your bodies right and give us 20 games each next year. Apparently Taite goes alright up forward. I wouldn't mind seeing that.
- Joel Alexis (posted 10/10/2011 12:37:20 PM)
Will look forward to it Gwenda & Diane, surely it will be posted :-) And Ray,tell Margaret to be himself will ya.he/she is carrying on like a c.... d...... Knew it Brownlow night, with the wrong lippy on... real ladies know best.. :-)

Raybie - finally! Myers had a solid season, with some injuries, unfortunately. He definitely improved and the coaches seemed eager to get him back in the team when he was recovered. Stewie Crameri was a deserving winner of most improved, of course. I guess my wrong prediction will be balanced out by yours.
- Kris Bayne (posted 10/10/2011 3:27:42 PM)
well done zakka thought heppel mite have polled better. good to see hurley up there too
- Doreen Gelston (posted 10/10/2011 7:34:06 PM)
Baynie, you will only be able to use the "INJURY" excuse for so long buddy??? Every "FIRST" round draft pick we have got after Myers has jumped in front of him??? like i said before Dennis Commetti best summed him up by saying " He hasn't got a right foot and his left usually gets him into TROUBLE " !!! Even you would have to agree with that Baynie????
- Ray Brough (posted 10/10/2011 7:46:46 PM)
I posted his speech on FB,Noel.Shame you are not there. Cannot email on my iphone, its 6 minutes long and it wont let me. I was able to say goodbye,to Welsh personally friday night.Lets hope the club allow, all the fans to say goodbye. Would love to see him go around at our first home game next year. Diane

On the fence a little on DM Kris and Raybie. DM's disposal though I do rate. Magnificent left foot and when he does have to use the right (under duress) it comes off. He is a little robotic in his football. Jimmy, as with most of our boys, has shown the faith this season. That will shine through this coming season.

1/ Seems strange Ray,an armchair critic having a go at a few who attend the Essendon games, who can view the games without the blinkered effect, that a TV screen can create for one, with action sports... "List clogger?!" you say about DM... Thought clogger can be the term to use when describing one,who repeats and repeats the same stuff.. If you are backing Hirdy & Crew like you say you are,me thinks if they are not impressed with DM,he would not be rushed back after injury.. whatcha think!?!

2/ Imo and in your opinion,we are going to differ with this one, like others also differ with you as well on the same subject ...:-) You don't need the dunces' hat,but because of the breezes you get over there, you need the one with the little propeller on it,sorta like a wind turbine to create and charge up some fresh ideas.. Go the Northern Bombers,The Essendon and Bendigo Bombers also in 2012... :-)

Mmm fair enough Scarr Bras, but his disposal like you have posted is only good when he has time and space??? And that don't happen most of the time Bras??? Way way to slow by hand and foot,And yes Bras Very "ROBOTIC" as you call it!!! Cheers Ray.
- Ray Brough (posted 12/10/2011 3:34:31 PM)
EI "TEMP" any chance you can do this job "FULL TIME"??? You are doing a great job at the mo!!! Way Way better than the other "CLOWN" who has his "LITTLE FAVOURITES" !!!! Cheers Ray.

Ray - ha, made me laugh! But no, I'm just keeping the seat warm. Maybe even over-compensating for his usual stellar work. But we make a good team and I predict great stuff from us in 2012.
- Essendon Insider Temp (posted 12/10/2011 4:32:11 PM)
Glad we follow the same team Raybie! We can see it now, all excited, EI-t on side, swinging circles in your chair, laughing at your own jokes. Do you realize though, when you go uncensored - the real Raybie is exposed - just cannot figure if you are beer or salted?

Noel i admire your bravery for sticking up for Angie, but she is a big girl mate let her speak for herself??? I am eagerly awaiting her response!!! Noel one of the benefits about living in Tassie is we get "BREEZE" from all directions, and none from Japan I hope!!! lol, The "ONLY" explanation for playing DM after injury as I see It,is to "BUMP" up his value during "TRADE WEEK"?? Now Noel say DM was for exchange in part for say a Paddy Dangerfield or the like, you my friend would be saying "DAVID WHO" ??? Cheers Ray.
- Ray Brough (posted 12/10/2011 6:03:25 PM)
I back the Club, and the Coach(of the day) Ray.. am a simple person, don't need to question everything, and certainly don't need to worry about "hypotheticals" like you described... it "ain't gonna happen" mate,Dangerfield to Bomberland ha ha ha...Arrr Ray,you're a bag of laughs.. :-) DM stays... Good enough for Hirdy (yes,repeating...Coach of the day)... good enough for me,simple as that...Get over it mate.. and send bobby home, the medallion club are seeking him/her for her/his renewal... Go Bombers :-) :-)
- Noel Shields (posted 13/10/2011 12:29:12 PM)
Noel ole buddy don't forget one thing mate, you have been "WRONG" before remember the "TERMINATED" one from last year?? ya said that was never gonna happen either??? You even have been "AROUND" footy longer than me, so you should know better than to say "ITS NEVER GONNA HAPPEN"??? lol Cheers Ray.
- Ray Brough (posted 13/10/2011 12:46:54 PM)
I can handle being wrong Ray,and I can get over things pretty easy... You are having probs movin' on mate.. suggest you let go.. mooorrre fishin' less MK/DM stuff.. one day, some of us just won't reply.. just like Angie with all bobby's requests for hot chocolate... he he... Cheers Noel :-)

Hi Ray. I'm a stats nerd, so that's how I'll make my point. David Myers: average disposals 19, 1 less than Hurley's ave. Ranked 17th in the list. 51 marks, 4 more than high flying Hibbo. 141 kicks, on par with super Benny. 106 handballs, more than Spike. 31 Tackles, on par with Fletch. On the basis of which of these stats do you think David warrants trading? Angie :)

Thanks Noel. xxx Angie

Oh and btw, Ray, those in the naughty chair are often very smart cookies! :) No dunce hat in sight I can assure you. You don't have to be stupid to be naughty, as you very much prove! :) Although I might question your wisdom in having a crack at Diane Trask. It was nice knowing you, Ray! xx Angie :)

MMMM, Yes little miss "ANGIE" has got a problem of not replying??? Ange hunny there is an old saying, if you are going to give it you have to be able to take it??? LOL Cheers Ray.
- Ray Brough (posted 13/10/2011 6:31:17 PM)
Angie all good and well to read a stats book??? How many of his "AVERAGE" ( 19 p/g ) disposals were to advantage??? And you forgot to mention how many clangers and s/c points did he score also???? Cheers Ray.
- Ray Brough (posted 14/10/2011 12:04:30 PM)
And by the way Angie,Diannne always has a crack at me over just about everything, so is this a "ONE WAY STREET" and I'm not allowed to "REPLY"??? Your other half isn't EI "FULL TIME" is it???lol. MMM Cheers Ray.
- Ray Brough (posted 14/10/2011 12:18:24 PM)
Ray, I think we should agree to disagree about David Myers. I have watched him closely this year, as I have Brent Stanton, simply because of all their detractors. Honestly, I can't see what you're on about, but hey, that's your opinion and that's ok. :) Angie
- Angeline Baron (posted 14/10/2011 2:10:05 PM)
As to whether or not EI is my other half, that is a "no". And as for your stoushes with Diane, go for it, Ray! I'm sure you'll both have fun chewing the fat over this great Club of ours. No harm done. Angie
- Angeline Baron (posted 14/10/2011 2:13:32 PM)
"MMMM, Yes little miss "ANGIE" has got a problem of not replying??? Ange hunny there is an old saying, if you are going to give it you have to be able to take it??? LOL Cheers Ray." A rather chauvenistic post, Ray???? I am not a Miss, I am a Dr. Please spell the word honey correctly, but don't refer to me as this unless you are being nice to me, not as a condescension. Cheers Angie :).
- Angeline Baron (posted 14/10/2011 2:19:04 PM)
Very well said Angeline. Unfortunately every club has "supporters" like Rabid Ray, who have a poor understanding of football, and show a lack of respect for players and real supporters. I have noticed with Ray, he basically only sends comments in to bag DM and previous coach MK, and now he is having a go at you. After this, he will have a go at me, but he can hiss and snarl at me for all he is worth, because quite frankly, I think he isn't worth really worrying about.
- Gordon Moss snr (posted 14/10/2011 5:16:28 PM)
Rock on Angie! EI wants to catch up with you me and Kris for a hot choccy on his return. We have to wear our glasses!
- Brad Scarr (posted 15/10/2011 7:43:16 AM)
LOL, Im always "NICE" DR ANGE!!! Cheers Ray.
- Ray Brough (posted 15/10/2011 8:57:08 AM)
And unfortunately Gordon Moss JNR every club has supporters like you, who cant see the "WOOD FOR THE TREES"??? And i also thought that this country, along with these "FORUMS" there is a thing called "FREEDOM OF SPEECH" ??? Opinions are like backsides JNR everyone has got one including you!!!
- Ray Brough (posted 17/10/2011 2:28:07 PM)
Rabid Ray, so I can't see the wood for the trees because I don't get onto our club's website and obsessively snipe at any of our players and a former coach from the safety of my keyboard. Yes Raybies hunny, in this country there is a thing called freedom of speech, but as a fifth generation Australian, I can tell you that also there is something called a fair go here, where most of us think young people learning something, shouldn't be constantly and irrationally criticised.
- Gordon Moss snr (posted 17/10/2011 3:37:50 PM)
JNR MOSSY, If you employed anyone as a trades person they get 3-4 years to "PROVE" themselves or learn the trade correct??? Why should footballers be any different??? Then why shouldn't questions be asked about DM, especially if you are a first round pick ( 6 ) and players picked by the club after him in the same draft are already better than him at the same stage of their development??? You can go down Baynies track and say "INJURIES" have slowed his development, "RUBBISH", I cant for the life of me see why he was taken ahead of players like Palmer,Dangerfield,H.Taylor And Rioli??? Just some more bad recruiting buy our club!!!
- Ray Brough (posted 17/10/2011 5:34:11 PM)
And more bad input from you Raybie. What we are after hunny, is something positive from you towards 'our' club. As Mossy outlines, instead of your cheap shots at 'our' players and 'our' supporters. Don't then whine when you cannot get your derogatory posts through?
- Brad Scarr (posted 17/10/2011 6:37:10 PM)
I suppose Ray,you would say the same to your Northern Bomber kids losing by that point in the GF this year... I can just hear it... "you kids shoulda improved from last year and been goals ahead!!??" You tell me mate about me having the RCGs..Rather have them to put on,when the occasion suits Ray,than the ole blinkers.. ..wwwwhhhhiiiinnnniiieeee... RACING!!! THERE'RE ORRFFF.... Cheers :-)
- Noel Shields (posted 17/10/2011 7:48:52 PM)
Rabid Ray, DM has missed a lot of games because of injury, and that has hindered his development, that is a fact, and not an excuse. He is still only 22 and has only played 36 games, he will get better with more games under his belt and has actually played quite a few very good, or reasonably good games for us already. Did you notice that he was B.O.G. against Brisbane? As well as the stats Angie gave, Dave's stats also show that he wins his fair share of contested ball, and doesn't make many critical errors.
- Gordon Moss snr (posted 17/10/2011 8:42:15 PM)
The Z Man - congratulations. Can only get better.....
- Victor Tallis (posted 18/10/2011 4:00:13 PM)
I'll be in that, Brad :) Thanks, Noel and Gordon. Ray, don't care what you say, I still love you because you are a mad-keen Bomber like the rest of us. xx
- Angeline Baron (posted 18/10/2011 9:00:07 PM)
That's alright Angie, and please don't be embarrassed by this, but not only are you very intelligent and have a good understanding of football, but going by your comments on this forum, you seem to be a very kind and gentle person.
- Gordon Moss snr (posted 20/10/2011 3:16:35 PM)
You're right Gordon, Angie is a very nice person. I had the pleasure of meeting her, among others, at Etihad Stadium one Sunday afternoon. (Hi Angie!)
