Bombers to argue Richmond clash

Essendon will write a letter to the AFL this week arguing that its jumper in no way clashes with the Richmond guernsey. The Tigers have previously been identified by the AFL as a team whose guernsey clashes with Essendon’s traditional strip.

Under the rules as they stand, Essendon will have to submit a clash guernsey to the AFL by the end of this month. The AFL has ruled it would have to be worn against Richmond - as well as Melbourne and St Kilda - when Essendon is the away team from next season onwards.

"If we have to submit a clash guernsey then we will but whether we ever wear it is another thing," Essendon chief executive Peter Jackson said. "Watching the game on Saturday night, there is no way that our jumpers clash in my opinion - the difference is stark."

Jackson said he had looked over video footage from the game over the past couple of days and informally spoken to some members of the playing and coaching group.

"The consensus is that there is no clash with Richmond and we will be expressing that view to the AFL in writing," he said.

"These clubs have had a great rivalry and that has been heightened with the establishment of Dreamtime at the G. I can see no reason whatsoever that these guernseys should be considered as a clash."
