Hille wins first Crichton Medal

Essendon ruckman David Hille tonight capped off an outstanding individual season, winning the 2008 Crichton Medal. Hille accepted the award in front of more than 1200 people at a function at Crown Palladium.

In a career-best season, Hille quickly cemented himself as one of the more dominant and consistent big-men in the competition before a hand injury prematurely ended his year.

His consistency was evident in the voting, polling in 14 of his 20 games. His best performances of the year came in Round 12 against West Coast and Round 13 against Carlton in which he polled 26 votes (out of a possible 30) in each game.

Hille finished the count on 256 votes, 40 votes ahead of second-placed Matthew Lloyd (216) and 68 votes ahead of third placed Brent Stanton (188).

Lloyd also finished second in the award in 2001.

Hille was taken with selection 40 in the 1999 national AFL draft. Since making his debut in 2001, the 201cm ruckman has played 144 games and kicked 106 goals.

Thoroughly deserved and good to see Matthew Lloyd getting some worthy recognition. Adam McPhee seems to be a little unlucky, I thought he had a terrific year, better than Stanton.

well done david. who does the maths at efc, the differnce between 256 points and 216 points is 40 not 50. that lack of attention to detail seems to be all over the club at the minute.

Well done David. You had a great year!However, I have concur with Brett above- Smokey has to be unlucky to end up out of the top 10! He sacrificed his game, as he has over the past two years( thrown around everywhere by Sheeds), performs a role for the team, ends up with most goal assists and fails to be recognised for his efforts.

go hilley what a season what a champion im happy you won because not just the season but the nab cup it dosent have an effect on the season but having an fantastic season does give him a lot of confedence coming into 2009 next season
