Bombers seal 44-point win over Hawks

It was a David and Goliath battle at the Docklands tonight as a young and relatively inexperienced Essendon line-up defeated the reigning premiers of the competition in one of football’s great rivalry matches.
The Bombers displayed courage, composure under pressure and slick run and carry through the corridor as they left nothing to chance and worked to pick apart Hawthorn’s midfield.

With all players contributing, Essendon used the zone to their advantage and maintained solid defensive pressure for the entire match in order to seal a 44-point win.

Essendon’s Patrick Ryder said the team’s forward and midfield pressure was key to the Bombers’ win.

“We were disappointing last week so we wanted to front up and give Hawthorn a good run. The pressure that the boys put on up the field and out of defence to play how they played was great,” he said.

“The pressure around the ground was fantastic. The boys just put their heads down and pushed through for the whole match.”

The Bombers looked dangerous through the midfield, moving the ball quickly and skilfully.

“The speed of our team is one of our strengths so that is something the boys want to do – get the ball and take them on and run it in through the midfield,” Ryder said.

“It just shows we can win games when we do it right.”

Despite coming under scrutiny during the week, Essendon’s young backline showed its doubters they could limit the influence of Hawthorn’s spearheads Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead through solid performances by Cale Hooker and Tayte Pears.

"Cale was fantastic, both him and Tayte,” Ryder said.

“Even though Franklin and Roughead kicked a couple of goals, the effort they put in was fantastic.”

Ryder said Essendon will look to back up their performance as they head into another tough battle against the unbeaten St Kilda next week.

“We will look to focus on maintaining our momentum going into next week,” Ryder said.

“We need to encourage each other on the track so we don’t repeat what happened in Brisbane.

“Tonight we went in as underdogs and came out victorious and that does a lot for our confidence.

“It shows we can beat any team when we are playing our game style and do the things we are taught to do.”

Well done Bombers, awesome win tonight. I was sure we would get smashed tonight after our effort last week so didn't fly across for the game. Gee I wish I had now!!! We still made some mistakes but we are clearly getting better. Looking forward to getting some of the older guys back from injury purely from a persepective of pressure to keep your place in the team. 'Carn the Bombers!!!!

- Lara O'Dea (posted 9/05/2009 12:00:37 AM)
Where's all the negative supporters waiting for our next lost. I got called a bogan last week for defending this great club that i love and i was right to all the morons i said to expect nothing. Most were saying we would be pumped by hawthorn, stkilda and geelong. Take one week at a time we are young and knights is taking the right approach. I wonder how hardwick feels he thinks our list was poor. Yeah Ivar Biggen was that what matthew knights predicted? Didn't look ugly to me. Go dons Win lose or Draw i will always support you that's what i pay my membership for.
- Jeddy Telescourt (posted 9/05/2009 12:01:26 AM)
You've just got to love these Bombers! How much do they step up on he big stage? Another huge scalp and some real depth with McVeigh, Prismall, Skipworth, Welsh, Hurley & Fletch to return. We're going places!

consistency!!!!please boys consistency!!!! we have a very good and exciting line up and so as our game plan.just consistency!its good tobe underrated sometimes.that north melb and bris games were winnable, easy, but we just didnt prform.
- mark manginsay (posted 9/05/2009 12:19:50 AM)
Well said Jeddy Telescourt. To all you unfaithful supporters take pride in your club, we are young and raw. the boys are learning every week. impressed by the whole team tonight and especially over 4 quarters. All you knockers of slattery and monfries over the past weeks pay attention. You have no idea about the game. monfries is an exceptional target up forward. slattery might not be a high possession winner but he puts in the hard yards. same for sam lonergan - always head over the ball and copping the hard stuff. well done bombers!
- Stuart Debnam (posted 9/05/2009 12:25:10 AM)
Winderlich...for what you have gone through the last 2 years, your amazing to watch this year mate...all credit to you.

- mat mcbain (posted 9/05/2009 12:41:17 AM)
What an unbelievable win! Best win of the year without a doubt with at least 8 players in our best 22 not playing tonight and we've beaten the premiers by 44 points. Stanton was unbelievable, Pears and Hooker did there job and more, Lloyd and Monfries were dynamic up forward and Watson, Winderlich and Ryder were great in the middle! Lets keep the good form going and beat the Saints next week and look forward to September. Go Bombers!
- Andrew Cichello (posted 9/05/2009 12:51:28 AM)
Brilliant effort and great game. This just shows what this side can do when they believe in themselves, their team mates and their game plan. For those who question Matthew Knights' tactics and approach - please slink off to some dark corner. This is another brick in the wall that will become fortress Essendon. Bring on St.Kilda!
- Kris Bayne (posted 9/05/2009 1:02:04 AM)
sensational win boys!!!! lets keep the same pressure up next week!!
- Jane McMenaman (posted 9/05/2009 1:21:01 AM)
Why do we need any players to return, Fletcher has been great but do you really think he could have done what our young back line did tonight? I look forward to seeing Hurley, Prismal, Reimers, Im sorry to say it but Lucas is finished. Th Bombers are coming!! Attention please!! This is you captain speaking... your clear for take of Lloydy!!
- Adam Smith (posted 9/05/2009 1:22:33 AM)
What a difference great tackling makes to the result. Also I think the Bombers are the best team to watch in terms of playing an exciting quick brand of high speed football. Outstanding work by the whole young backline. Pears Hooker Dempsey Slatery in particular
- Trevor Swain (posted 9/05/2009 1:45:31 AM)
Awesome win boys a big pat on the back to you guys we smashed the premiers. And to those posters that continually post (Watch out in 2012) its 2009 and we are playing awesome football, hell we could win a premiership before your predictions. Go Bombers.
- josef sakac (posted 9/05/2009 2:02:39 AM)
Well done boys and once again all the doubters who keep knocking the club every time we lose - GO SUPPORT SOMEONE ELSE!!! Go the donnies we showed the world where we are heading. In fact we have arrived so take notice all clubs cos the bombers are here to win the flag.
- Jeremy Little (posted 9/05/2009 2:10:07 AM)
RAPT WITH THE WIN. ONLY NEGATIVE MYERS TOO MANY MISTAKES HOPE THE EARLY DRAFT PICK ISNT TOO MUCH PRESSURE.
- Enzo Spinozzi (posted 9/05/2009 2:14:41 AM)
"Good fortune favours the brave"... what great reward for risk taking, backing each other up,and playing with confidence. After years and years of injuries, playing sides like Hawthorn was always a struggle, they seemed to always have their full strength side up against us. Oh what joy to see the situations reversed, couldn't have happened to a "nicer" mob... :-) Well done to the whole playing list, and all coaches and staff. End Pt 1.
- Noel Shields (posted 9/05/2009 2:18:39 AM)
Pt 2 Selection pressure will keep this type of momentum going i feel, hunger to stay in the side, hunger to play well, and to succeed. Turning the corner luck wise with injuries will help even further. All the best boys, you make us feel oh so proud with your efforts and performances, you don't always win but it is there for all to see at how hard you are trying. Tonight it all clicked, and the result will be in the EFC History Vault FOREVER,as a just reward for you all. Keep on building brick by brick, like Kris Bayne suggests.
- Noel Shields (posted 9/05/2009 2:21:27 AM)
Lets hope all you baggers notice the endless hard work & 15 strong grabs from our Captain Supremo Matty Lloyd. And lets not forget Adam McPhee's endless support to the YOUNG GUNS down back who stand taller when he's around. True leadership when we needed it most, BUCKING GREAT STUFF MEN ;-)
- Brett Jukawics (posted 9/05/2009 2:36:31 AM)
How good are the bomber supporters, we turn up on mass, just hoping our boys will be competitive and the boys are giving it everything, what more can we ask.Great mark Paddy and Gus, Great win bombers 2012 Premiers here we come

"SENSATIONAL" Where did we find all these young gun backmen, "WOW" Hooker WHO? what a ripper!! watch out this guys going to be around for a long time. And what about Pears, he shows great courage & commitment to every job he's delegated. Daniher's looking a super prospect as well. Just one question any chance you guys can evolve Hurley into a SUPERGUN Centre Half Forward? And how about preparing young Still as Lloydy's sidekick up forward so he can takeover in a couple of seasons aye?? Oh my god!!! now I'm really dreaming. =) zzz zzz
- Brett Jukawics (posted 9/05/2009 3:05:25 AM)
We are going to see a pretty good list representing this club next few years. These young players are starting to blossom.Patience is a virtue.
- Mark Elze (posted 9/05/2009 3:11:26 AM)
Before the bounce of the ball i knew something special was brewing about my boys and they didn't let me down. A fantastic game from each and every player. To all the doubters out there , here are a few choice words - WE STUCK IT RIGHT UP YA! GO BOMBERS!
- Mary Agius (posted 9/05/2009 7:09:52 AM)
Well done bombers!!!!! Another great team effort... Good to see Lloyd leading from the front and using his influence and skill to full effect... Your pace boys left the hawks limp and useless. Believe in yourselves boys. You can do great things. Keep your heads down and work, work, work.... 'Is Jobe Watson the new Judd?' - He seems to have all day to decide whom too feed the ball off to... Only other player I've seen with such composure is Judd, just needs to perfect his kicking skills and he will become one of the elite.... Too many names to mention - So a big WELL DONE BOYS!!!!!
- David Blazko (posted 9/05/2009 7:19:21 AM)
All the knockers from last week - where are they now? Our Team is moving forward, it just takes time and we will have our ups and downs along the way. Lloyd's men need our support (even constructive criticism) not a bagging - we aren't Pies fans. I put $20 on Bombers by under 39.5 @ $6.80 - oh well - great game and an awesome win!
- Chris Wilson (posted 9/05/2009 7:33:47 AM)
GO THE BOMBERS!!! see what a young team with two new players(cale hooker and tom bellchambers)can do!!! and we destroyed them with pace!!
- Jezza Chau (posted 9/05/2009 7:44:29 AM)
Another scalp the team has collected so far this season, but I hope that after this win, we can start stringing them together, even if a winnable game against the Tigers is sandwiched between more difficult matches against the Saints and Cats respectively. An all-round team performance last night. Keep that up more often than not this season and we may play finals again. Go Dons!
- Maranatha Sao-Mafiti (posted 9/05/2009 7:48:51 AM)
I am still shaking with joy, grat effort. GO BONBERS Kay Cox QLD
- Bob Cox (posted 9/05/2009 7:54:00 AM)
Memo to Matthew Knights. Congrats on the win. To all the team enjoy the moment. Your next challenge is to do this 2 weeks in a row. The game plans is awesome when it works. BUT your must have a plan B when things are not going our way. Not turn up our toes like we have did against North, Brisbane etc. More wins like this in a row will have the jury rethinking it's verdict. GO DONS
- Geoff Congues (posted 9/05/2009 8:10:31 AM)
Hille goes down and Ryder steps up; Fletch is injured and the baby backline steps forward. Lucas is dropped and the young forwards take the opportunity. We have a great team of talented (and raw) young players who will develop consistency if allowed to play together and if given the responsibility. Older and/or injured bomber players take note - you'll need to earn your spot from now on. No wonder some of you didn't look like you enjoyed watching the game.
- Jeff Forster (posted 9/05/2009 8:20:43 AM)
Awesome game. I was at the game and i can't describe the feeling. Lloyd is a genious and Paddy Ryder is a star. And my oh my, we have found a ruckman in Tom Bellchambers, he played like a legend last night.
- Joseph Attard (posted 9/05/2009 8:24:03 AM)
The best part was seeing lloyd take a mark over franklin in the last quater lol
- Jeddy Telescourt (posted 9/05/2009 8:34:44 AM)
Absolutely outstanding performance last night Bombers, It's hard to believe looking at the way we played last night and the way we played against Brisbane last week that we were the same team. Hopefully this 'every 2nd week' consistantcy doesn't continue and we start playing it all the time! Fantastic game from Hooker, Neagle, Monfries and the master Lloyd!
- Dean Horton (posted 9/05/2009 8:40:51 AM)
lets not talk about injuries who could you take out of the side let this team develope and let the other boys earn there spot i would hate to be knighty to tell one of these boys that they are omitted this week especiallywhen it was such a great team effortwell done boys can not wait to see you put two games together it is my turn to pick you this week so please no changes unless someone cant walk well done bombers

Amazing win boys!!! this sort of performance is what makes me go to the footy each week!!! again a fantastic team effort with too many stand outs to name. Keep up the good work guys!!!
- Samantha Whitelaw (posted 9/05/2009 9:47:01 AM)
Super team effort. Great pace and pressure. That is what won it. Now lay off the backslapping and put 2 in a row together. We were awsome against Carlton, Collingwood and Hawthorn and complete crap against North and Brisbane. Be bloody consistent.
- Robert Monk (posted 9/05/2009 9:48:47 AM)
Jeddy Telescourt, no one can question my love for the EFC. I demand only the best for "My Club". Best coaches, players, staff, etc. I expect a win every game and bleed when we don't. At the moment we haven't got the best of everything. I still believe, hope I'm wrong though, that with Knights and some of our players it will always be a rollercoaster ride. Maybe you and a lot of our supporters can cope with losses but I can't stomach them especially against Carlton and Collingwood. Many a time I have physically defended my club from feral opposition supporters. Regards Ivar.
- Ivar Biggen (posted 9/05/2009 9:50:08 AM)
congradulations to the whole team that was how we will be playing under super coach knightsy. He has developed a system of play rather then relying on individuals.love your work team effort.david layton

pears was fantastic... didnt think we would come anywhere near hawthorn, i was one of the supporters who didnt give much chance of a win... pears kept roughead to 2 goals, unbelievable effort... pears should be given the number 1 forward every week... u ripper
- afradopilious frette (posted 9/05/2009 9:55:22 AM)
Fantastic win last night guys. Bring on the saints, we'll shut them down too!!!
- Daylan Pearce (posted 9/05/2009 9:57:10 AM)
I am SPEECHLESS!!! I thought it could not get any better when we beat Carlton but then Collingwood and now the Hawks. Un believable effort by the team. It makes going to see you play - win lose or draw all the more special and especially on a Friday night. I can now stick it up all those baggers at work who thought I was crazy going to see my beloved Bombers massacared by the reigning Premiers. What a great turn out by the Bomber faithful. Keep it up and do not let the doom sayers and the knockers get you down. SPEED THRILLS!!!
- Alan De Menezes (posted 9/05/2009 10:14:01 AM)
Great win, win of the year as it was emphatic against the premiers!! Coaches were spot on, too. Well done Knightsy and co. Whole team played well. Didn't give them an inch. I reckon they'll be a bit tired today- so intense but relaxed also. Hawks didn't look switched on, maybe they were complacent and hadn't recovered from last week. You stuck it up 'em Dons, brilliant!!
- Luke Dummett (posted 9/05/2009 10:14:09 AM)
well done boys see what happens when you all put in
- don carter (posted 9/05/2009 10:16:11 AM)
Well done Dons! Big improvement from last week. Keep up the intensity, pressure, make the most of opportunities and we'll win more games than we lose.
- Grant Carroll (posted 9/05/2009 10:17:05 AM)
Awesome effort boys, that's the sort of stuff we can do when we're switched on eh! I have a confession to make, that's the first time i ever tipped against us in my life, mainly because of the effort last week, but I'm stoked that you proved me wrong! The performance was amazing and consistent throughout four quarters, let's make sure we can put that same effort in next week! Keep up this support Bomber supporters, see you at the game again next week, CARN DONS!!!
- Liam Doidge (posted 9/05/2009 10:18:31 AM)
Great win last night against old rivals. What a fantastic game. I am thrilled at the Bombers gamestyle. Glad that it is starting to pay off. More accurate in front of goal than last week, made a big difference. Hard work at the stoppages was better than the hawks overall. Great win. Great work Monfries, Winderlich great this year, Lonergan hard nut, Ryder dilligent as usual, Stanton, Pears, Slattery, young guys, Bellchambers and Hooker. Let's not forget the skipper Lloydy! Go Bombers!
- Daniel Holmes (posted 9/05/2009 10:34:51 AM)
Awesome game last night boys! Well done! Twas great to see the ball just keep on moving, the hawks didn't know what was going on!! Keep it up boys, one game at a time! Let's take it to the Saints next week! GO DONS!
- Amber Langham (posted 9/05/2009 10:38:41 AM)
Well comparing to last year, a every second week consistency would be okay, but not ideal. It would give us a say 11-11 record, but it's not enough. If we beat St. Kilda next week, i can honestly say that beating Geelong is not out of the question and finals is on the horizon.
- Joseph Attard (posted 9/05/2009 10:46:21 AM)
Fantastic Win Guys - we're incredibly proud of you all! Really disappointed in some of the comments during the week from so-called supporters ie. drop Stanton, monfries, dyson, mcphee. Either get behind the team or get off at the next station. This is a journey not an overnighter. GO BOMBERS!
- Peter Venn (posted 9/05/2009 10:47:00 AM)
IM EXCITED WELL DONE BOYS
- Luke Jones (posted 9/05/2009 10:49:52 AM)
Wow..I went to the game and couldn't stop jumping up out of my seat. I'll never forget the look on the Bombers fans faces as they were in sharp contrast to the disappointed Hawks supporters. I went home and watched it again to make sure I wasn't dreaming. Well done by all playing and coaching staff.
- Adrianne Blainey (posted 9/05/2009 10:54:59 AM)
great win boys that was just as good as beating collingwood on anzac day, no one gave us a chance without fletcher. cale hooker and tayte pears well done boys could not have played a better game between ya. the best part was holding hawthorn to 10 goals, no team does that, only the bomber.
- Tyge Cross (posted 9/05/2009 11:03:57 AM)
well,i backed the Hawks last nite & thats one tip I`m glad I lost, great to see these young guys stepping up & playing fast, hard footy, just one thing,we need to play like that week in week out,now next time we play Port Adelaide lets hand em a belting,I hate that cocky team!!!!!
- mawby Ian (posted 9/05/2009 11:05:35 AM)
Great team effort. Cale Hooker will develop into a magnificent CHB and tell me who goes out when we have Hille, Fletcher, Lucas, McVeigh,Welsh, Gumbleton, Hurley, Reimers and Prismall aavailable. Salivating thought! For the true believers - it's all about to happen - again. Go Bombers
- Mick Brown (posted 9/05/2009 11:06:39 AM)
What a great performance by the team to beat Hawthorne. When the ball is delivered forward quickly to Lloydy he is still almost unbeatable. Great to see he did not fall over as much last night and was able to contest with a second effort. Fantastic performance by our inexperienced backline to restrict oppositions scoring.
- Neil Mc Innes (posted 9/05/2009 11:14:56 AM)

great game bombers, good fast footy straight down the corridor is the quickest way home ,its going to make the injuried players work hard to get back in this baby bombers side now, good to see bellchambers have a run in support for paddy, again well done all 22 players
- Neil Missen (posted 9/05/2009 11:39:18 AM)
Now, hopefully, persistent baggers of the likes of Dyson, Myers & particularly Brent Stanton will realise these boys can actually play footy. Sure their efforts may lack consistency but as they develop further we'll see this improve. So proud of this team, and rapt to see Matty Knights thoroughly outcoach the Hawthorn crew. Anyone still calling for his head?!
- Dennis Green (posted 9/05/2009 12:01:03 PM)
I have wanted hooker in since round 1 and i think tonight he showed he is a good 10 year player and with him, hurley and pears, the future looks good! I must say i wrote us off after last weeks dismal perfomance, but the one i have been ultra impressed with is Stanton, hes starting too get more contested and harder at the ball. Hawks cant blame injuries, we have plenty
- Dan Hines (posted 9/05/2009 12:08:20 PM)
there were no stand outs for me last night i thought ALL the boys were fantastic it was team footy at its best. we are going to have some ups and downs but i think consistant succsess is just aroud the corner go bombers!!!!

hello Ivar Biggen. Correct me if i'm wrong but you stated you will not be buying a membership as long as Knights is coach? What has knights done to you? Geez you can't always win you have to take it on the chin get over it and come back bigger and better next week. Watching the 84 grand final i could imagine hearing our supporters saying what is this richmond sheedy prick doing putting td down back? Just have faith and enjoy the ride we are on to something youngest team in 19 years last night, and look at what they achieved. We have the points now lets bring the saints down. pt1
- Jeddy Telescourt (posted 9/05/2009 1:04:08 PM)
pt2. Ivar my problem is that you have nothing positive to say when we win clear example you did'nt even say well done, and when we lose you attack the team you love. I hope we can turn you around they have to keep playing the game plan.
- Jeddy Telescourt (posted 9/05/2009 1:11:28 PM)
TRUE BELIEVERS - This win was for you. Soak it up. It was well desaerved. DOUBTERS. - Start believing once more. KNOCKERS - Leave or better still join the likes of Richmond, Collingwood or Carlton where you will feel more at home whinging. WHAT A WAY TO START THE WEEKEND!!!
- Alan De Menezes (posted 9/05/2009 1:17:30 PM)
I think you know what i mean, Sheedydid things we did'nt think will work but he proved many wrong give Knights a Chance!

I just cant single anyone out,,,,it was a full team effort from an exciting, young team,,i havent seen that sort of pressure around the ball for a long time,,,congrats KNIGHTS/LLOYD...

GREAT WIN BOYS. It may be a rollercoaster ride at times but when you play like this and take the game on it's exhilerating. Keep it up and all us Bomber supporters will be in for the ride of our lives.Andrew Webb
- Andrew Webb (posted 9/05/2009 2:42:33 PM)
absolutely rapt in the way Mathew Knights coaches this team, the faith he shows in his players will have us back as a strong club once again, congratulations to the whole team on a fantastic result last night,
- Richard Neudert (posted 9/05/2009 2:55:16 PM)
Its funny we haven't heard from Peter Pischek this week!! What's that Peter the cat got your tongue? Hmm I thought as much! Great win boys, I felt that this was the night that the EFC started to win RESPECT back from the AFL world. Knights has had pot shots taken at him from media, supporters, and x players. Knights never promised a premiership, but he is going to give us a allmighty ride. How much better are we this year than last, and you look at it, our injuries are probably a par if not worse this year and still look at our results thus far!
- Malcolm Milgate (posted 9/05/2009 2:57:55 PM)
WOW, what a win, unbeleivable. Congrats boys on one of the best wins I have seen. Well done Monfries, you killed it!!! GO BOMBERS

No Hille, No Fletcher, No McVeigh, No Lucas & WE STILL WON!! FANTASTIC game Bombers! Great to see the young guys like Cale Hooker, Tate Pears etc play so well! Gus Monfries was BRILLIANT & it's great to see the maturity in Andrew Lovett's game. I'm proud of ALL of you!
- Sue ONeill (posted 9/05/2009 3:39:33 PM)
GO THE BOMBERS I LOVED THE GAME IT WAS EXCITING I WISH YOU BOYS COULD PLAY AS GOOD AS THIS EVERY WEEK
- stephanie versace (posted 9/05/2009 3:57:33 PM)
Awesome performance last night everyone stood up to send last week into the dust. Well done Lloydy showed everyone that you still have the magic. Excellent work Gus you are a star. Lets put it into next week and show the Saint what we've got. Go you Bombers!!!!!!!
- Pieter Finch (posted 9/05/2009 4:14:52 PM)
Perhaps we need to give the players and coach a blast every so often.Just have a look at how they CAN play when they ALL put in. There is no point praising a poor effort as some supporters do. We are not knockers we are true supporters. There is no point telling someone that smells of b.o that all is roses. Perhaps no win no pay could be introduced! Top Effort Guys
- steve rendevski (posted 9/05/2009 4:57:36 PM)
GREAT work bombers you all did great but monfries killed it and patty rider WHATA MARK
- stephanie versace (posted 9/05/2009 5:12:59 PM)
Mr Malcolm Milgate go and see a brain surgeon, my tongue is longer than yours I will have plenty to say. Its easy to crow when we win. However lets see what the rest of the year holds for this team. Maybe Knights has decided to listen to some of the comments made on this site. It has taken him six weeks to make some changes and they have worked good on him. However the jury's still out ltes see where this ride takes us. In the mean time grow, you seem to be frightened to call it as it is when they play badly. Go Bombers.
- Peter Pischek (posted 9/05/2009 5:20:20 PM)
OK yes bloody good win but there is still a ways to go yet hope the boys can back up against saints. I'm still not happy with some of the inside fifty's Let me say this please when you are inside the fifty HAVE A BLOODY SHOT AT GOAL each time you handballed it screwed up example lovett-murray to lloyd. lovett-murray you know how to kick goals why oh why didn't you have a crack imagine how many more points we could have beaten they by five or six times this happened back yourselfs you can do YOU DID DO IT . BUT IT WAS GREAT TO SEE A GOOD WIN GO BOMBERS
- Jeff Skinner (posted 9/05/2009 5:41:08 PM)
Hooker and Pears did well on brisbanes forwards? my word, we are going to be absolutely murdered. also drop stanton and give houli a run - Wendall Teapot (posted 6/05/2009 11:46:41 AM) WENDELL!! Ever heard the saying ËAT YOUR WORDS"?
- Ian Wilton (posted 9/05/2009 5:44:51 PM)
well done bombers. we put up a good fight and it helped us win. everyone played really good and i was very happy that we didnt let them get to many goals. lets hope we can put up another good fight next week against the saints GO BOMBERS!
- jessica flood (posted 9/05/2009 5:46:08 PM)
PART 2 it was great to see the young guns of essendon at work. The backline looked solid all night good job pears and hooker. both prepared to leave their man and create play fantastic. Ryder in the ruck with Bellchambers who held his own great job. it was also good to see lloydy come good with 4 majors well done champ. bloody good effort all round. It was a quiet second term ehought the hawks were back at half time I said to myself this is make or break bombers if you have a good third term you'll be good for the last and didn't they smah them second half, non stop pressure from everyone fantastic effort keep up the good work
- Jeff Skinner (posted 9/05/2009 5:50:57 PM)
Not many of the knockers names above, still want to sack half the players,PLEASE guys don't expect that every week, it shows what will be in the future but remember in the ideal situation most of our kids would be given a few games then a few in VFL so they don't get burnt, 18/19 yo kids fantastic future, love everyone of our team but would love Riolli also, the game plan is working and will only get better as the young guys mature and bodies get stronger..UNITED we stand..
- Mark McLachlan (posted 9/05/2009 5:53:55 PM)
Part 3 guys i've been overseas since the start of the season missed the first 6 games so very bloody happy learn that not only did we beat carlton but we got the pies on ANZAC day you bloody ripper Go The mighty Essendon Bombers
- Jeff Skinner (posted 9/05/2009 5:53:59 PM)
Last nights win was one of our best of the 00's. Knighta, congrats on what you are building here. This side is so young, and maybe we'll cop some losses, but the spirit of this side is getting a LOT of the armchair critics eating their words. Just find the consistency boys, and you just never know what we could do! Congrats to the WHOLE club, this was a MAJOR win against all the odds.
- Graeme Blore (posted 9/05/2009 5:59:07 PM)
Well done boys, a pleasure to be at the game and prove the critics wrong!!!
- Leanne Butterworth (posted 9/05/2009 6:20:51 PM)
Jeddy Telescourt not sure what you're on but where in my post is there any mention of membership??? I will stand by my original claim. Sure it was a great win but we need to do it consistently not evry now and then. I still believe that with Knights and co. and a few of our turn over specialists there will be more pain than pleasure. Regards Ivar.
- Ivar Biggen (posted 9/05/2009 6:44:05 PM)
All I am saying Peter Pischek is that you are very good in taking pot shots and not actually supporting the team. Still after a great win, there is no praise! A very hard supporter! I bet you complained about something when we won in 2000. The team is young yes they will make mistakes yes, but gee don't kick them in the guts only when they loose!
- Malcolm Milgate (posted 9/05/2009 7:05:36 PM)

- Frank Del Prete (posted 9/05/2009 8:44:10 PM)
I am with you Mark Mclachlan, it was an exciting game to watch, but in the end we have kids, but talented kids. We can't get disheartened if we can't put in that kind of performance every week. But the future is strong, very strong. But what is working into our favour is that the football world doesn't expect us to win against the top sides, we go out there with no expectations on us, just the expectation of our coach to execute the plan and that we did. GO BABY BOMBERS!
- James Bourne (posted 9/05/2009 10:50:32 PM)
PART 2: Knighta well done high risk coaching and helping to develop these player in excitment machines. However to the essendon fans out there, just realise that even though that knights is doing a brilliant job, all the players that are performing and our coming good are the ones from Sheedys era, knighta has had a goodlist to work with. So thanks Sheeds for leaving this club in good stead and thanks Knighta for developing their skills.
- James Bourne (posted 9/05/2009 10:55:04 PM)
Part 3: steve rendevski i don't think it was your blast that got us over the line on friday night. I just think some supporters expect too much from the essendon players, more than half the team is under 23. Imagine what a job the coach has got. Steve take the good with the bad, because thats what you do when you got a young side.
- James Bourne (posted 9/05/2009 11:05:15 PM)
Well said Chris Wilson, where did all the knockers go this week? This team is on the rise and we should expect bumps along the way, along with some fantastic wins. Well done Bombers, great win and great coaching Knighta!
- Jeffrey Bonser (posted 9/05/2009 11:12:57 PM)
One good win and two flukey wins don't make ya great. Knights and co are no good. Let's get EFC people at this great club!!! From [name deleted].
- KG (posted 9/05/2009 11:15:57 PM)
I think we're turning into one of those sides that other teams won't want to play... if we turn up to play, then we run teams off their legs... our best is becoming very, very good... agree though with a previous poster that our ball use going inside 50 is still awful at times
- Matt Dawson (posted 9/05/2009 11:31:10 PM)
Well done Matty Knights... you believed in an exceptionally young and inexperienced side and as a result we have just smashed the reigning premier! I love it how people keep writing off our mob... Jason Winderlich a MASSIVE BnF CHANCE! Go the MIGHTY BOMBERS!!!!
- Matt Grima (posted 9/05/2009 11:57:45 PM)
To see such a young team perform so well says that Essendon are now starting to enjoy an ascendancy that only long-term supporters are familiar with (remember the early Eighties). It bodes well that we could achieve such a result against the reigning premiers whilst a stack of our stars are up in the box looking on. Imagine what our brilliant team can achieve in the next couple of years - start getting used to more game time in September!!!
- Brendan Williams (posted 10/05/2009 8:51:01 AM)
Peter, I think the main point here is that as a supporter you support the team, no matter what - that isn't to say you can't be disappointed when we don't play well - but this nonsense of calling for heads to roll, etc, when we are obviously a team in transition, is what gets others off side. From my point of view, as soon as a kid pulls on the red & black then I'm a fan. Simple. Same with support staff, coaches, bootstudders, doormen, and everyone else connected to the mighty Bombers...!
- Dennis Green (posted 10/05/2009 9:11:09 AM)
Simply put - WOW! Great high pressure football. It looks great and gets results. No Fletcher, Lucas, McVeigh, and Welsh so the youngsters really stepped up to the challenge and did us proud. Unfortunately, and as much as I admire what Scott Lucas has done over the years, I think the game has become too fast for him. Unless he can become a key forward target again and bag some goals I think this may be his last year in the red and black.
- Darren Humphries (posted 10/05/2009 10:06:19 AM)
Im not knocking here, purely just saying Bellchambers needs to spend a few more weeks in the VFL. he has potential, much more than useless laycock, but he just needs to work on things and i dont think it shud b in AFL. whoever said hurley shud go CHF, well daniher shud Hurley is a fullback.goin down to see Prismall in Ballarat today XD
- Dan Hines (posted 10/05/2009 10:30:52 AM)
I lost faith in our boys after last weeks effort, but what a comeback ! I guess we need to patient with this up and coming side, I can see a great future which might not be too far away. Matty Lloyd- you are a Champion
- Tony Calder (posted 10/05/2009 10:37:57 AM)
What a fantastic win. Just got home in the Sth Wst Vic after being in Melbourne to watch my Mighty Bombers. Now to the mockers that I have had a go at lately, why cant I see your names here. Do you lot only comment on the losses, very poor support. In the crowd was an old lady that seems to think Stanton is no good, she gave abuse towards Stants all first half and this is the 2nd time I`ve seen her do this. What a loser, Stants was magnificent, 36 touches 4 clangers pretty darn good. I also have to say that Knightsy deserves better than he cops aswell, so lay off the coach. Go Dons.
- Cory Williams (posted 10/05/2009 3:00:24 PM)
Peter pischek u r pathetic. U have the nerve to say that sum of us r afraid to call it as it is when we loose. How about u start calling it as it is when we win!! We had the most inexperienced side to represent essendon in a game 4 almost 20yrs. We had 16 players who had undr 25 games next to there name. That stat alone means we r going to b inconsistent. If u cant understand that then u no nothing about football.
- Christopher Domjanic (posted 10/05/2009 4:41:15 PM)
GREAT WIN BOYS. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. MAKING US ALL PROUD! GO THE DONS :)

Peter Pischek, Isn`t it funny that your comment appears after Malcholm Milgates comment. Your the one with no brains. Do you think Knightsy reads your stupid comments about selections. Maybe he was going to do those moves anyway. Peter, support Knights or go away.
- Cory Williams (posted 10/05/2009 5:12:42 PM)
to ivar biggen and steve rendevski you say you are true supporters and when we lose you blame it on the coach...if you listened to him and players like lloyd and fletcher they say we will be inconsistent at times but hey what would they know compared to yous...oh and ivar biggen you say you want essendon to win next this might be a newsflash to you but so does everybody else here you tool!

- Brett Martin (posted 10/05/2009 9:06:04 PM)
After reading that lot where do I start... First, WELL SAID: Peter Venn & Dennis Green. I haven't seen your comeback from the pregame post Christopher Domjanic. As for Ivar Biggen u tw@t, "I have physically defended my team" we don't want thugs in the outer standing next to 6yo & throwing punches. We need loyal supporters to "SUPPORT" through thick & thin. Sure it can be a frustrating game at times but it makes the good times even more special because of the hard road that is now the AFL seasons. Please, please, please PETER PISCHEK never, ever buy a membership ever ever again.
- Rob Fisher (posted 10/05/2009 9:27:16 PM)
Ivar I was refering to a past comment but I realised it was from KG about not being a member if knights is coach!"Perhaps no win no pay could be introduced! Top Effort Guys - steve rendevski (posted 9/05/2009 4:57:36 PM) Lmao that is some funny sht I hope you go to your boss first thing and suggest a new method if you don't do your daily duties in time to dock all your pay lets see how you like that idea?
- Jeddy Telescourt (posted 10/05/2009 9:52:40 PM)
GO BOMBERS Big difference having a tall forward taking marks. As soon as Neagle took that grab in the first quarter you could tell that we were going to be competitive. Hooker and Pears also great in defense. Winderlich and Watson well done around the stoppages especially tying up Brad Sewell and co. The biggest plus was for Lloyd having support in the forward line in form of Neagle, Monfries and Lovett-Murray. Keep up the good work and start working on the consistency.
- Terri Xuereb (posted 10/05/2009 10:07:53 PM)
SUPERB GUYS! Nice to see Natrad playing so well and what a fabulous banana to go through for a goal! Everyone's effort certainly SHUT THOSE HAWK SUPPORTERS UP AROUND LEVEL 1 AISLE 36/37! THEY HAVE NO CLASS. Keep it up Bombers. I'M PROUD OF ALL OF YOU!
- Joanne Wallis (posted 10/05/2009 10:27:11 PM)
What a great win! A great performance from every player. Our big problem now is going to be working out how to fit in the likes of McVeigh, Hurley , Prismall, Skipworth, Fletcher, Welsh et al without damaging the balance or reducing the passion the team played with this week. Certainly none of this week's team deserve to be dropped!

What a great win. To all those who thought resting Scott Lucas was a bad call - what can I say - have faith in the coaching staff and accept our guys will win some and lose some - so long as they are putting in and being competetive I will be extremely happy - this is a great start to the building of a new era for our great team.
- David Scott (posted 11/05/2009 12:29:47 PM)
The theme of knockers appears to be lack of consistancy. The same senario happened in Sheedy's rein over many years that reaped 4 flags. How dealy Richmond, Footscaray, Saints and others would love to say they have seen that. Someone said support through thick & thin over get off at the next station.........how true, let me open the door for all you knockers
- John Baker (posted 11/05/2009 12:57:15 PM)
So where is the bloke that bagged the team we had picked on friday, you have nothing to say now ha ???? If only i could say what i would really like too. Great win boys, soak it up !!!!!
- Luke Tuckett (posted 11/05/2009 1:15:58 PM)
Cory Williams wake up to yourself, of course the coach does not listen to my comments, however many others on this site have been saying the same things. Think back to brisbane game, we are getting smashed in the centre, so knights leaves stanton and wunderlich at half forward, doing nothing, they are good ball winners. You seem to know so much were you at the game of course not, do you want my air ticket and seat number at the game. Grow up. Go Bombers.
- Peter Pischek (posted 11/05/2009 1:33:12 PM)
High octane stuff! Against the odds. Team effort. Lloyd - it was just a matter of time before he began kicking goals again. In my opinion he has been playing hard football all year - a born leader. Young guns on fire! Hardness at the ball! High marking! Good skills! Assisting one another when the going got tuff. Bring on The Saints! Bring on The Cats! Bring 'em all on! GO BOMBERS!!!!!!
- Victor Tallis (posted 11/05/2009 3:22:18 PM)
Already posted something earlier Folks, but just had to add this message that has been on my mind for a few days... You know,we have all been awestruck at the win by our very young side.(compared to the experience of say Geelong and St Kilda.) But i have never seen the determined look on some of our players faces before, until i realised that some of these guys had been in the "line in the sand" game that that crud Brereton had stirred up during the last win we had against this "mob". End Pt 1.
- Noel Shields (posted 11/05/2009 7:48:42 PM)
Part 2. Ask the likes of Winder, who had his nose smashed by that SOT Brown ("Son Of Thug")as Winder was running off the field to the interchange. And don't forget all the Hawthugs players reported that day,and Essendon still massacred them. The kids that have played in the games since that result, have never experienced a win against the Thugs,so there’s another angle on the result,it was no ordinary win, it was SSSSWEET… AND SSSSPECIAL :-)
- Noel Shields (posted 11/05/2009 7:50:10 PM)
Part 3.Final. The AFL changed some rules that have not suited the “Thugs” style of play,so no more thuggery…. The Monfries mark on SOT’s head was pure BLISSSSS. Stay patient Bomber fans, still a way to go,but for the future it is looking rosy every time the boys are allowed to play like that. Enjoy :-)
- Noel Shields (posted 11/05/2009 7:52:11 PM)
Peter, your still full of it like some of these other non supporting comments. Yes, I was at the game ya numbat. Anyway, why cant you give Knights a fair go. You`ve got rocks for brains if ya think were going nowhere. I`d say top 4 next year with not many injuries. Go Dons.
- Cory Williams (posted 11/05/2009 8:04:44 PM)
Really KG,with your steadfast negative attitude in not admitting due credit to an excellent coaching effort by Matthew Knights and his support team,it is no surprise at your lack of courage to display your name now,and also join up as a member while,in your words "Knights remains coach"....End Pt 1.
- Noel Shields (posted 11/05/2009 11:31:34 PM)
Pt 2. Despite trying to help you see the light some time back, re "{Kurac G....,you gotta get over it with the change of coach, and although it has been an extremely difficult transition for us all these past 2 years,Essendon is moving in the right direction. When the younger bodies mature and players gain that important experience,we will become a powerhouse again,AND this time maintain it,not just be a one year wonder.... Continued sensible recruiting will keep us up there in the mix. Sign up again Kurac and enjoy!!" (posted 5/04/2009 7:41:11 PM) I am now of the opinion you are not worth the trouble, you will always have a head full of nothing....

Well Done Bombers! Great Great team effort & great marks by both Paddy Ryder & Angus Monfries& great game Stanton. How good was the captain's game can't keep a good man down for long. Just wish we could play like this when we play interstate. Never thought I would hear Leigh Matthews get so excited & say he liked the bombers style of play that's saying something. Go Bombers!
