Essendon smash Carlton by 69-points

A gutsy four quarter team performance at the MCG tonight has seen Essendon demolish arch rivals Carlton in what is possibly the club's most important win of the season.

The Bombers delivered above expectations in a season defining win – a victory that makes their hopes of playing finals football this year more realistic.

Emerging defender, Tayte Pears, was sensational, keeping Carlton spearhead Brendan Fevola to just two goals and running up the ground to set up two for the Bombers.

“The Carlton win earlier in the year was great because it was so close but this win was fantastic because the boys really showed what they could do,” Pears said.

“Running off isn’t something I do that often but it was great to get down the ground and set up a couple of goals.

“I sort of took off and no one really came to me so I couldn’t believe my luck.

“I just went about it and played my role for the team and Fev was unlucky missing a few shots at goal but I’ll take that.”

Essendon produced four quarters of high intensity football and was assisted by a number of solid individual performances.

Jobe Watson was in career-best form, collecting 16 possessions to the main break before missing the remainder of the match with an ankle injury. He is expected to miss at least one week.

Angus Monfries kicked five goals straight, Andrew Welsh and Brent Prismall were imposing through the midfield and Alwyn Davey’s defensive pressure around the ground was first class.

“I think the midfield pressure really helped us tonight. They picked Carlton up a bit higher up the ground and made it easier for our defence to spoil,” Pears said.

“Jobe Watson was fantastic for the first half. He is a very important player for our team. If he had played for the whole game, we would have won by a lot more.

“I think Prismall has found his feet now and he is fitting into the side really well. He is an amazing player and will be good for the future of the club.”

The 69-point win sets the Bombers up for a thrilling blockbuster against arch-rivals Collingwood at the MCG next Friday night.

Geez just got home from the game and me and me Bomber mates are still pumping from it. Before the game, with McVeigh and McPhee out, I didn't give us much of a chance, just hoping. But wow what a magnficent performance by the boys. Maybe, just maybe I've been a bit too harsh on Knights but time will tell. How good is Welsh and the Pris, magnificent effort guys, Jobe great in the clinches until forced off by injury. Proved me wrong tonight. Looking forward to the Collingwwod game. Go my Mighty Bombers. Regards Ivar.

- PHILIP TRUONG (posted 26/06/2009 11:43:16 PM)
Yes, we did smash them, didn't we? Quite surprising, I thought, given how close the game was at quarter and halftime and trailing the Bluebaggers by fourteen points late in the second term. And talk about hypocrisy. Walls didn't even criticise the Carlton supporters for leaving in their thousands in the last quarter when they were trailing by plenty. Anyway, five straight against those Blue pretenders. Only Collingwood, Richmond and Hawthorn the major rivals to take care of now. Well done, team, and go Dons!

Was there a player who didnt play well tonight? Sam Lonergans workrate was outstanding. Tayte Pears was great on Fev. Core players (Stanton, Lovett, Welsh Prismall) were all great when the game was there to be won. And Fletch? Fletch was, well, Fletch....yet again. Hope Jobe doesn't pull up too bad! Well done Bombers!
- Somerville Doug (posted 26/06/2009 11:51:26 PM)
Best win I've seen since about 2001. Everyone played so well. Lovett is a superstar.
- Andrew Dunsy (posted 26/06/2009 11:53:22 PM)
Fantastic job fellas! Hope we don't pull up too sore from this one. Jobe your a star and we're gonna need you next week to beat Ivars team. Keep up the good work guys, only thing better than beating Carlton is SMASHING Carlton!

ABSOLUTELY SATISFYING. Even making some so called Bomber People eat their words. Love to say leave the team unchanged because tonight we had 22 men working together, Lovett aside, no stand out, just a true team win.. Yeah the Blues are coming... straight out of 2005/6 Pity about Jobe, Spike or Hurley back next week and let Lonners play Wattos role. He was tremendous tonight. Re-Focus now boys, back up ANZAC day and we will see September action
- Lauren Brennan (posted 27/06/2009 12:14:39 AM)
MONFRIES you are a star! i love you! and damn u r hot :P:P great win n bombers! keep it up i hope collingwood were wtaching that cause there guna get a taste of it next!!!!
- nick proctor (posted 27/06/2009 12:22:04 AM)
Bloody Hell Ivar, you must've had a few frothies at the G tonight. This is by far the most positive post I have seen from you. Although you would've been hard pressed to say something negative about tonight's performance. As for the Blues, right now they don't even know if they are coming.... or going. I reckon they're gone! Fantastic game boys.
- Rob Fisher (posted 27/06/2009 12:24:15 AM)
Maranatha, you're surprised at Walls' hypocrisy....? He's hated Bombers for years, must be the fact he's not even worthy enough to lace the boys boots. Must say though, if we beat Collingwood next week, a season where we beat blues and Pies twice; Awesome! Only better result by my reckoning is a flag....
- Des Fitzgerald (posted 27/06/2009 12:31:07 AM)
Ivar, how dare you! Don't you dare go jumping on the bandwagon now. Go to Carlton website and add your comments there. I'm sure that's where your true allegiances lie!
- Des Fitzgerald (posted 27/06/2009 12:35:40 AM)
Could it be??? The win that made Ivar Biggen realise he was wrong, that Matty Knights has these boys on the right track? Praise the Lord!!! Has Andrew Lovett landed yet? Any higher and he'd have gone into orbit....Back it up next week Bombers and smash the pies!!!!
- Ben Crooks (posted 27/06/2009 12:40:45 AM)
Geez everybody arnt you lot forgeting about our ruckmen tonight...PADDY WAS AWESUME....Hooker was exellent to back up to give our runners first use, plus hookers attack on the ball and the way he broke tackles was great for a tall man..lonners was great in wattos absence, hope he continues his form when wattos back!!!!Welshy was superb,as was our gun fullbacks fletch&pearsy...all in all a fantastic team effort rite down to the coaching staff...what a great recruit pris is...lookin foward to seein hurls play..PADDY U R A LEGEND..

Nothing better than that, because I hate Carlton (with respect) more than anything. Now lets keep these comments positive because our Bombers are flying Up, Up, Up. Go the mighty Dons.

We saw you coming Carlton, and we watched you leaving too in droves, early in the last quarter. Woo Hoo, I love this team, they played sensational footy. Carlton, you talked yourselves up during the week, and no one gave us a chance. Great play and contribution from all of our boys, well done. Bring on the other scourge Collingwood now!

Well done Bombers!!!!What a game, well done by all players & coaches. As for the knockers of Knights and the boys, I'm sure they will be back next time we lose a game, but what the heck ? Who needs the knockers ? This team will give supporters plenty to cheer about in the next few years.....Go you Bombers!!!!

Wow! Now that's what i call a statement to the "footy world" :-) Well done boys,a just reward for all that gut wrenching play and TEAMWORK... Ivar,it takes a big person to admit some errors of judgement and opinion,so well done too :-) Last night we saw just reward for good planning, recruiting, and coaching that shows Essendon are heading in the right direction.Errors each week will continue, but being patient and continuing support for each of our players who give their all, will help us all through to that "one day.." :-) Go you Bombers !!
- Noel Shields (posted 27/06/2009 2:43:53 AM)
As i said last week,it was ALWAYS Carlton who had to do the thinking and worrying coming into this game, not Essendon. It's now FIVE straight.Essendon will pose similar headaches for Collingwood next week. And their Mid-field is nowhere near Carltons.

AWESOME pressure applied x all, and just remember we won't be @ our best for another 2-3 years, keep the game plan & we will be the fastest, most creative side the AFL has seen,Love the way Hooker attacks the ball with confidence @ such a young age, he will make a few mistakes but I think when he learns & matures he will be a real ball magnet, well done to all

I thought you would beat the cats also - but you guys didn't believe you could... It's all about belief in yourselves and confidence. Go forth and know that all things are possible for this great team!!!! Well done bombers - great effort.... Well coached Knights!!

Wow what a win. Its very promising to see us putting 4 quarters together. Lets keep the momentum going and shake this comp up. Would be fantastic to sneak a final or two this year boys!! I cant stop thinking how more powerful we would be with big David Hille in the side (although Paddy has risen to the top). Geez we are starting to look dangerous on paper!! The mighty dons are on track to potential premiers in the next 5 years!!!

I loved Sheeds and what he did for our both on and off the field and I am really loving what Matty Knights has achieved in such a short time. Lets all jump in the boat and row it but dont rock it.September here we come. And by the the way with our SPEED we are 10 goals better at the MCG.

- Elly Davidson (posted 27/06/2009 8:12:37 AM)
Also, may i say, great to see our outside speed and class getting in and under and laying good hard tackling pressure. Licka and Dyson putting on 7 and 5 respectively and seeing them constantly getting up from the bottom of packs was brilliant. Thank you Ricky D, for 3 years i've been telling the detractors to ease up, and 2009 has see you play every game, average 20+ touches, add more physical pressure to your game, hit those beautiful 50m+ inside 50 passes constantly (ref: to scotty lucas 3rd quarter) and really earn your place in our best 22. Keep up the consistency mate, i'm so proud. Stick it up em.
- Lauren Brennan (posted 27/06/2009 8:16:31 AM)
We have a deep, deep pool of talent at the club at the moment... It is hard not to get excited. It won't be this year but it won't be long. Ricky Dyson is repaying the faith as are all the young player. Bachar, Gumby, Neagle, McPhee, McVeigh, Hille, Hurley are all out and don't forget Myers and Nash! Exciting times ahead bombers fans.
- Matthew McPherson (posted 27/06/2009 8:18:23 AM)
I agree with Greg Adkins. It seems when Essendon win a match, commentators and fans are all worried about why Carlton lost or any other team lost to Essendon. When we make the finals this year, they will most likely talk about why the 2 or 3 teams just under us couldn't win matches when it counted against us.
- Joseph Attard (posted 27/06/2009 8:24:17 AM)
Just a LITTLE harsh on Matty Knights, Ivar?! Hmmm... A fantastic effort from our blokes, with Jobe missing for 3 quarters. Thought this was Tayte's best game, and he is a star. Prismall is shaping as a real classy footballer. His vision is fantastic. Great to see Fletch, Scotty & Lloyddy contributing, and the indigenous boys were magnificent, as usual. And what about Andrew Welsh?? Just awesome! Here we go Bomber fans, up, up, up and away we go!!
- Dennis Green (posted 27/06/2009 8:27:51 AM)
What did we all expect? It's what Bombers do. BLOW THE TANKERS RIGHT OUT OF THE PARK!!! GO YOU MIGHTY BOMBERS!!! If we keep playing like that, we might win another premiership sooner than we think. Ivary Biggen'stupid, go jump on another club's bandwagon, you don't deserve to take credit for KNIGHTS win!!!
- Adrian Reynolds (posted 27/06/2009 8:43:25 AM)

Best Essendon performance i have seen for years! To all of u continually bagging Ivan each week, get off his back, he is always one of the first to comment and offer constructive criticism for many areas we have been lacking for sometime, showing just how committed he is to this team. He clearly knows the game a lot more than some of the other 'supporters' who add their drivel in here week in week out and i find my self coming to many of the same conclusions as him and often agreeing with him most weeks. Cheers to the boys on a fine display of Aussie Rules - Bring on the pies!!!

Lucas chasing and making second efforts, life in the Big Old Dog yet! Everyone contributed, every single player. Garry Lyon & James Brayshaw made fools of themselves again on Triple M, a lot of success on the field between those two losers! One was a soft failure and the other never played a game! No silly things to get reported and miss out. Everyone HAS to perform and work hard, otherwise there's someone right behind you to take your place!
- Terri Xuereb (posted 27/06/2009 11:16:09 AM)
Great Effort Bombers!!!! think the Geelong game was a great lesson on how to play hard and consistent for 4 quarters and it looks like you have all learnt and grown from the experience. Ivar, you're the worst kind of supporter! you hate on the team and the coaching staff when things aren't going great but so quick to jump back on the wagon after a win! true supporters love and encourage the club through good and bad. Gutless. GO DONS!!!!
- Anthony Nathan (posted 27/06/2009 11:16:35 AM)
super win by the dons, mcveigh will come back for jobe i think hurley should come in to be our third tall defender, nlm struggles on taller types but has great tackling pressure he's the only 1 hurley could come in for(would be stiff)hooker needs to be rested so he's fresh when paddy needs abreak, love to see zaka in as well but 4 who?lovett 80 supa pts, murphy 124, i know who had more influence on the game, who adds these things up?tbc
- Samantha Briggs (posted 27/06/2009 11:18:03 AM)
Nice one!! Congrats to all concerned. Blues are pretenders, great to flog them. Hope Robert Walls watched closely after a ridiculous and boring article on Real Footy .com. End the grudge, Wallsy. Hope Jobe isn't too crook. He is brilliant!! Look out Collingwood. Unlike the Swans, the Dons can run fast
- Luke Dummett (posted 27/06/2009 11:18:27 AM)
cont,i know scotty done well again but cant help feeling he's gunna struggle with players running off him,i hope i'm wrong but when he loses his feet he can be slow to get up,thanks briggsy
- Samantha Briggs (posted 27/06/2009 11:20:42 AM)
Woooooooooooooooooo!!!! The bombers kick ass doubling the blues and some. I'm very pleased for 2 reasons 1 Carlton is the team I hate the most then Collingwood and 2 It gives the dons a massive percentage boost. But lets just all hope that Watson is OK to take the pies next week. Interesting Fact: Bombers have won 16 premierships and their two biggest rivals are next with Carlton also 16 and Collingwood 14. Lets see if bombers can make 17 flags this year to having won the flags. Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! go Essendon
- Rory Albert (posted 27/06/2009 11:28:38 AM)
ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL Bombers, and Scotty you did us proud. Even better to see them Carlton people with their heads down leaving long before the end of the game. My $100 at 100-1 looking better all the time! GO BOMBERS!!!!

if we can do that every week the 2009 cup is ours!

Great EfFort from all bombers , thats how a team plays , hunting in packs , hard tackles contributions from all, if we can play like that we can beat any team. Stay hungry and crush all we come up against. We have the talent and proud history so lets destroy collingwood next week and go top 4 . Lovett star, monfries outstanding, pears great job all did well. keep it going Knights you are on track.
- Robert Radulovich (posted 27/06/2009 12:04:46 PM)
carlton stood us up! they said they're coming and we told them we're waiting. well done boys. that was a dominating performance, few more games needed to polish skills.weeeeeeeeeeewwwwww BOOM!!!!

DONT GET TO EXCITED HAVE NOT BEATEN ANY OF THE TOP 4 SIDES YET BUT A GOOD WIN
- Dave Davo (posted 27/06/2009 1:19:34 PM)
Great job but one constructive criticism. Stop the liarising and gesturing to the crowd after kicking goals, it looks arrogant and stupid. It makes us look like didak or davis at C'Wood. By all means celebrate but not like that. Kick the goal, be congratulated by team mates then head down and focus on getting the next one!
- Francis Connolly (posted 27/06/2009 1:21:57 PM)
fevefailure Tate Pears future star
- LUCAS GREEN (posted 27/06/2009 1:29:03 PM)
Did anyone notice the stupidity of Fevola of holding up the ball in one hand after a mark and pointing it at Pears. I think it changed Essendons resolve to flatten the tankers. It is interesting to note the the media are now calling for his scalp. Lets reload for next week and smash the meat pies. GO BOMBERS
- Peter Pischek (posted 27/06/2009 1:41:24 PM)
There is a lot of praise for Welsh, Monfries, Pris etc. I thought Hooker was outstanding tonight. His ruckwork allowed Paddy to take a rest (bench and fwd line) which saved Paddy nearly a 1/4 of rucking. This guy can play and Knighta you will have a premiership backline very shortly. Well done Pears, NAB nomination surely this week - hey Fev any danger in running? you are a flog and didn't I love reminding your supporters of that! Go Bombers!
- Malcolm Milgate (posted 27/06/2009 1:58:16 PM)
Awesomeo performance...No bad players, the pace and the way the game was opened up through quick hands and speed was great to watch from up high at the G and that type of play lends itself to 2 super power forwards. Ahead of where i thought we would be by a year. Well done Knights, players & all at EFC...

To the Essendon coaching and support staff and of course the boys, thank you. Watched the game with 4 rabid Carlton supporters and loved every minute of it. I'm so proud of our boys.
- Scott Assender (posted 27/06/2009 2:25:22 PM)
I'm speechless. What a fantastic win over the team I love to hate. I agree with those who've said that they haven't felt this optimistic about the Bombers since 2000 - 2001. Great job and well done to all the Essendon staff including players, coaches and support staff. Bring on the Magpies. Hope Freo give them an exhausting workout today.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Is all I have to say to our Mighty Bombers and all those responsible for last nights crushing defeat of those pretenders who do not know if they are "coming" or going. The first time we beat them it was great but this was just heaven on earth. Great way to shut Robert Walls (the chief Essendon hater) up too. Keep up the good work boys.
- Alan De Menezes (posted 27/06/2009 3:09:30 PM)

Just for a moment there I thought I was back in 2000, except we were missing Mr James Hird in the middle. What a fantastic display of domination and ruthlessness at last! Once again, a sign of more good things to come, and the boys are only getting better. Awesome to see Welsh back to his best - we've missed him heaps. Jobe, hope you're alright mate - we'll miss you next week. Scotty had a good game too - good for him! (we all want you to succeed mate)
- Brendan Williams (posted 27/06/2009 4:05:57 PM)
If Andrew Welsh breaks his other leg ( please no) does this mean he will play twice as good as he is now. What a fantastic comeback. Well done Andrew Welsh and all the team. I missed most of the last quarter as I was turning around all the time watching all those Carlton supporters walking out the back gate. Now back to the replay ( again)

Great game by the boys. I was especially impressed with the awesome return of Andrew Welsh, Brent Prismall finding more confidence each game and a great effort by Tayte Pears by keeping that moron Fevola quiet.

- MARK JONES (posted 27/06/2009 8:59:37 PM)
Nothing absolutely nothing better than beating Carlton, you've given us supporters a tremendous lift. To watch Paddy Ryder mark Reimer's freakish pass at the end of the game, and then send that ball goalward was pure bomber heaven. Once again, we call on the team to head back to the front line, this battle will be tougher than most. Finally Essendon has got its percentage over 100, and now is fighting for a chance to play in the finals.
- Richard Hayward (posted 27/06/2009 9:09:37 PM)
Wow! what i liked si that we were winning comfortably but there was no sign of slowing the game down! thanks for an entertaining, goal kicking spectacle boys!
- Michelle Cilauro (posted 27/06/2009 10:07:47 PM)
CFC - Nothing but BAD GAS! They know we're coming??? We waited! We saw! We kicked you out! Was at the game and there is nothing more exciting than seeing a fit spirited team that takes on our arch rivals and let the arrogance of bad wind float out of the MCG by 3/4 time.
- John Pandazopoulos (posted 27/06/2009 10:34:49 PM)
What a game! Best game I reckon since the 2000 GF. Promising signs across the whole field and theres nothing better than smashing Carlton especially when they think they are going to smash us! We put them back in there place and "We were waiting"! Jobe was unbelievable before he got injured, Lovett was amazing, Pears is going to be an absolute star and what a recruit Prismall is going to be. Great games also by Welsh, Monfries, Hocking, Lonergan, Fletcher and many more.... What a win!!!
- Andrew Cichello (posted 27/06/2009 11:40:06 PM)

well done boys i was very impressed with the display on friday. but lest we forget GEELONG & Stkilda this is where we need to get to. aND Collingwood will be out to put us down next week, regroup focus and blow them out of the field also. good luck boys and as im in WA and the afl is too weak to force the tv stations to play friday night games live over here ill be watching delayed. GO BOMBERS
- Dave Unwin (posted 28/06/2009 1:38:18 AM)
Awesome win!!! Against those arrogant, over-rated, tanking, cheating bastards. Perhaps a reminder of a quote made by our former president, Graeme McMahon after our well deserved 2000 premiership victory, is worthy of repeating: "To my old mate John Elliott ... SUFFER". And to Robert Walls and all the other arrogant, delusional, "tanker-wankers" out there, your so-called "Were Coming" slogan petered out to being nothing more than "Premature Elimination". GO BOMBERS.

First of all contratulations to Matty Knights for his excellent coaching tactics - great coaching, keep up the good work. Well done my Mighty Bombers - it was just sensational and fabulous having to beat the baggers in such great fashion. Great work by all team players especially, Paddy, Watson (before his injury), Andrew W, Andrew L, Prisa, Angus, Davey, Taite. Now bring on the WOODS. Good luck for Friday Night against the C'wood - regards to Matty Knights staff and the Team - Prices - Epping

Got the "vibe" in the pre-match warm up - we were focused, slick, and quick - great to see all round team effort for the whole game, not to mention those blue bagger "supporters" exiting at three quarter-time. Tip: get there early this Friday night for some stuffed magpie for dinner! Go Bombers!
- Marian Adamcewicz (posted 28/06/2009 2:35:09 PM)
The stats for the game report Monfries as having had five kicks - yet he kicked the ball just before quarter time from half back. Why wasn't that counted?

Scintillating performance from the team, and the coaching was first rate. I am very impressed by Knights' attitude during media interviews. The way he talks shows he very much has his feet on the ground and sees himself as part of a team, rather than a father figure. Coaching "from within" rather than from above, clearly, he is supportive and understanding of every player he touches on. The best in the league, if not the most experienced or proven - yet. Stay as real as you are Matthew Knights, and I just love to see the improvement in this team take flight week on week.

Karn the Bombers! Me n my bro made the trip over from Perth, and wasn't it worth it!Wasn't expecting to win by that much. I won 5 cartons of grog off my loser blues mates here. And got a photo of Lovett's hangar, it's a bit hazy, but you get that when you're that high up!

one of the best wins in my 50+ years of following efc Re collingwood i suggest a fast mobile young tall on the forward line to help split coll defence( presti and harry obrien usually do well re lucas/lloyd) we can beat coll but must watch out for swan thomas davis medhurst.
