Bombers big win on the road

If Essendon is to become a legitimate contender in the coming seasons it needs to start winning on the road regularly and it took an important step in the right direction at the SCG this afternoon.

The Bombers were as hard at the football as they have been all season and it was the cornerstone of a comfortable 35-point victory.

Essendon had some outstanding contributors, none more so than veteran Scott Lucas who showed he was anything but a spent force. Lucas was outstanding across half forward, working tirelessly, marking strongly and setting up a number of goals.

At the other end of the ground, youngster Tayte Pears again showed he will be a star of the future, winning plenty of the football and having a genuine physical presence that belies his years. Dustin Fletcher and Adam McPhee were also excellent in defence.

Jobe Watson, Andrew Welsh, Jason Winderlich and Andrew Lovett were very good through the midfield while Paddy Ryder produced one of his best performances of the season, completely outpointing Swans ruckman Darren Jolly.

“I thought Scott was a good contributor. He kicked three, gave a couple away and kept presenting and that is what the coach asked of him,” Essendon football manager Paul Hamilton said after the game.

“We got a pretty even contribution across the board which was really pleasing. We were a little concerned that we didn’t get reward for effort in the first quarter – which was the case against Collingwood last week – but this time it didn’t come back to haunt us.”

Hamilton was full of praise for 19-year-old Pears.

“He played a different role this week at centre half back which gave him the opportunity to run and create. The fact we had Michael Hurley in the side and playing deep allowed us to change things around a little bit,” he said.

“I thought Winderlich was excellent for us and so was Brent Stanton – the work rate of both those players was exceptional.

“We also finished ahead in contested ball and that was a good result against a Sydney side that is rarely beaten in that department. Watson and Welsh were very good in that area, particularly Jobe who we didn’t know would be playing until yesterday."

Essendon now faces a Western Bulldogs side on the rebound at Etihad Stadium next Friday night.

“The challenge this week was to beat a Sydney side that had not been beaten at home this season," Hamilton said.

"Next week will be another opportunity for us to gauge if we are improving - we are a work in progress and the best way to see how you are progressing is against good sides.”

Well done boys. Finals here we come. More practice on those (goal) kicking skills though, that was our undoing last week and is the only thing stopping us from being top 6. Carn'Dons. The flag's in our sights!!

Frustrating!!! Should've won by 10+ goals boys. Learn to kick straight and bury opponents!
- Matt Dawson (posted 11/07/2009 5:19:38 PM)
Great win fellas. Inaccuracy in front of goal when we are dominating possession will hurt us against better teams though... Up the bombers!
- Ben Owen (posted 11/07/2009 5:20:45 PM)
Good win boys...although margin should have been closer to 10 goals...interesting that Stanton wasn;t mentioned in above story even though he had 29 possies as well...perhaps author shares my opinion in that he is slow and lazy...all other youngsters have come on and left him behind..
- Corey Sleep (posted 11/07/2009 5:24:23 PM)
Tough, hard fought win. Great work. Everyone pitched in. Fletch can play on for years.
- Brett Crabtree (posted 11/07/2009 5:24:59 PM)
Well done bombers! A great win on the road - although, we must improve our goal kicking. We should've buried them! Congrats!!!
- Tina Saccone (posted 11/07/2009 5:28:14 PM)
Great win. Hurley looked great. Hard to see anyone else come into the team now. Only players i see missing that are in our best 22 are Hille, Monfries and maybe Gumbleton.
- Joseph Attard (posted 11/07/2009 5:32:09 PM)
Great victory on the road, four quarters of hard, consistent football. Let's repeat the dose against the doggies this week! Go Bombers!

Great win Dons, Fantastic to see a number of players take a big step. Who was that guy that said the Bombers wouldn`t win more than 4-5 games at the start of the season. What a joker. Go the Mighty Bombers.
- Cory Williams (posted 11/07/2009 5:45:47 PM)
well done bombers we are still in the top eight!!!!! great win
- jessica flood (posted 11/07/2009 5:52:28 PM)
Everyone said we were only going to get 7 wins at seasons beginning, interesting. But i have to say, im dumbfounded on how well Ricky Dyson is playing, all apologies to him but he stood up when we needed him today, all credit given. Prismall had a quiet one but golly gosh, Stanton played really well and Watson, well he just did what he usually does...
- Joseph Attard (posted 11/07/2009 5:58:24 PM)
I've been waiting for this article to come so that I could congratulate my boys! We beat Sydney IN SYDNEY!! WOOHOO!! Well done to Tayte Pears, Jason Winderlich & Jobe Watson (Thank God you're back, Jobe!). Also well done to Matty Lloyd & Scotty Lucas! I'm SO PROUD!! I just wish it was on free to air television. Listening to the game is not the same!
- Sue ONeill (posted 11/07/2009 6:00:48 PM)
Corey Sleep, wake-up. Paul Hamilton says in above article “I thought Jason Winderlich was excellent for us and so was Brent Stanton". Perhaps Stanton isn't as lazy as your reading comprehension. Go Dons!
- Daniel Milford (posted 11/07/2009 6:02:43 PM)
Great win on the road by the young Dons. Very impressive win against a fellow top 8 contender. September football looks likely for the Bombers, but the focus now needs to be on recovery and then Friday nights clash with the Bulldogs.
- Nick Forrest (posted 11/07/2009 6:03:48 PM)
Our Indigenous team members certainly make this side stand up, where would we be without them. The silky smooth skills and ability at times make watch in awe, and I am so pleased that Andrew Lovett was not forced to leave, he is magnificent. That is not to say I do not appreciate the efforts of Jason Winderlich, Tayte Pears or Jobe Watson, and I think as they play together more often, they will become a very formidable side.
- Neil Poyner (posted 11/07/2009 6:04:31 PM)
Best game I've attended in years! Had fun in the cheer squad today and watched a much better game than last week. Lloydy and Scotty were awesome and great fun to watch! (Lovey should also get a special mention like the banner I sat behind for most of the game... "I Lovett!!!") Well done boys!
- Brendan Williams (posted 11/07/2009 6:07:23 PM)

Kick straight and hold the ball when neaded and we will beat the dog's to
- Nathan Warburton (posted 11/07/2009 6:26:44 PM)
Another all-round four-quarter team performance. Great to see a mixture of old and new with Fletcher, Lloyd and Lucas - our veterans - still contributing with very good games and goals in Lloyd and Lucas' cases. Also, was greatly impressed with our younger players - Winderlich never stopped running, Lovett and even Davy were at their speedy best - I could go on but I won't. At any rate, it was a wonderful win and it keeps our finals' chances alive. Let's try and string them together now, boys, eh? Go Dons!
- Maranatha Sao-Mafiti (posted 11/07/2009 6:28:40 PM)
besides a ouple of lapses in defence and in the centre (when goodes was able to to run straight out for a goal) good job boys! the fact that we were able to keep the ball in the forward half after swans kickins was great too see!! pears far out what can i say its hard to answer the question "how good is he?" hes that good
- Travis Cusack (posted 11/07/2009 6:41:20 PM)
also good to see the selection panel are going to have a tough decision on who will make room for monfries when hes right to comes back...

Thank you Joe Attard!!! Finally giving Ricky the credit he's earnt back this year. he's improved out of sight. told u he was just set back 12-24 months after getting bashed, his confidence was destroyed. but he's come right back in 09 to deserve his spot in whats fast becoming the sleeping giant of afl midfields. thank u for being man and supporter enough to admit u were wrong, go bombers, mighty today, now lets string 3 or 4 together!!!

- Richard Hayward (posted 11/07/2009 8:15:51 PM)
I was at the game and the Swans dragged us back to them a bit, but overall was a solid win- missed a lot of shots in good conditions, bit slippery but no rain or wind. If Goodes and Kirk weren't out there Dons would have won by 60! Too much class for Swans. Go hard again against Dogs!
- Luke Dummett (posted 11/07/2009 8:30:26 PM)
MCVEIGH WAS QUIET. PERHAPS DID NOT EARN HIS SPOT? I SAY DROP HIM FOR THE DOGS GAME AND BRING IN ZAHA OR JETTA OR HOULI.

Solid performance needed next week but the key is 2 away wins at Subiaco. Go Boys, you are doing the club proud.
- Scott Assender (posted 11/07/2009 8:37:04 PM)
I thought the swans looked like a bunch of old hacks today! They didn't deserve to be that close and only were courtesy of our missing goals and the umpires. The umpys were shocking! It didn't seem to matter how the swans disposed of the ball when tackled. The great thing about today was the 4 qrtr effort. Missing a few goals in the first qrtr is no excuse for being hopeless in the second (like last week). Loved the fact Dyson was given the role on Shaw, as it meant shaw had no easy kicks, and dyson then hurt him back the other way. Well done Bombers!
- David Greven (posted 11/07/2009 8:43:21 PM)
A great win against the Swans on their own dung heap. Now for the Bulldogs, however it will take a four quarter effort with no lapses to beat them. If we get over them, we might very well do some damage in the finals, here's hoping. Go the mighty Bombers!
- Tony Calder (posted 11/07/2009 8:43:39 PM)
great effort boys.Mcphee played another good game ,maybe our supporters might get off his back now.Great to see scotty back to his old form,if we are to beat the doggies the boys need to kick as straight as we did in the adelaide game, but win .GO BOMBERS
- Diane Trask (posted 11/07/2009 8:44:44 PM)
great to have some depth in the side. Very even contribution from all today. Great to have spike back but also glad we don't have to rely on individuals. Refreshing to see Jason W interview after game - all credit to knights. Stick to the plan dons!!!

well done bombers good result now for the dogs heard that stanton had a good game sounds like he has lifted his work rate, winderlich best on ground Lucas,Lloyd and Fletcher had great games to so did Pears sounds like all the boys played well ,the radio said McVeigh had a poor one but he will fire soon he has a big heart .

Great game bombers hope you a great win next week.
- Romilda Jones (posted 11/07/2009 11:04:34 PM)
Great to get the points on the road and comfortable in the end. We see the role for Lucas now. Reinvented himself. Who would have dreamed of a handball in the goalsquare!!! Stanton needs to pick his efficiency rate up. Jobe's hands are brilliant. Missed chances will cost against better performing sides as it did last week. But plenty of positives to look foward to
- John Sexton (posted 11/07/2009 11:58:33 PM)
Matt Dawson +1 I agree. The fact that we didn't win by an earned 60+ points could bite us in the butt in the make up of the final 8. I don't fancy our chances playing Brisbane or Adelaide at their respective home ground in Week 1 of the finals (Brisbane beating Geelong at the Gabba: VERY SCARY indeed). But we've done it in the past with Kevin Sheedy against Fremantle in Subiaco. Maybe the morale of the day is our 'works in progress' team must fail in some areas (accuracy in goals) to make up for & excel in other areas. Oh well, it's a nice dilemma/balance conundrum to have methinks!
- Jose Bay (posted 12/07/2009 7:42:11 AM)
Yeah good win should of won by 10 goals!(when you dominate play that much ther should be no excuse). About time Hurley got his chance it allowed Tayte Pears to play CHB (what a game he gets better every week). Also good games from Winders,Jobe,Welshy,Stanton,Paddy & Fletch. Must kick alot better in front of goal against the Doggies, Now Slattery has to go he is too slow to play down back his skills & decision making are'nt good enough N.Lovett-Murray IN H.Slattery OUT & lets give the Doggies a Floggin' GO BOMBERS!!
- Ben O'Neill (posted 12/07/2009 10:05:43 AM)
Brent Stanton must be one of the most disparaged footballers ever to wear the red & black! The wider football community is one thing, but when fans of his own club consistently take his efforts for granted, and on a day where he cuts the opposition to ribbons is hardly given even passing credit for it, then clearly people are not paying enough attention to the number 5. In my view, he's one of the elite runners in the whole competition!
- Dennis Green (posted 12/07/2009 10:57:56 AM)
One comment--"make the most of opportunities"--we did not against Collingwood--we lost. Lets not make same mistakes against Bulldogs
- Pamela Norris (posted 12/07/2009 11:40:19 AM)
bring that game and kick straight against the dogs and we win
- Matthew Holloway (posted 12/07/2009 12:14:04 PM)
Good interstate win good team effort forward line really well execpt for the goal accuracy. Must of bein watching a different game stanton in the best what a joke lost count the amount of times he stuffed it up winderlich what a gun was probly best a ground. Young players are getting better and better.
- adam daly (posted 12/07/2009 12:22:53 PM)
hey Neil Poyner, Our indigenous players are playing well but take note Tayte Pears is an Indigenous player as well.......And should win the NAB rising star for this year.

I had a dream about a week ago. My dog who I'd renamed Winderlich was hit by a car and then another young dog I owned by the name of Sam Lonergan ran headfirst into the side of a slow moving car. Because I can't predict the future I'm expecting good things from the Dons for the rest of the season. ;)
- Justin Millard (posted 12/07/2009 1:23:23 PM)

I agree Steve Kantonis. Silence is speaking volumes now Ivor Biggen. It's a shame the dogs got done as they will be looking for redemption. I don't think they will be looking forward to playing us though. Go Bombers.

- Grace O'Rourke (posted 12/07/2009 3:36:53 PM)
We played some good football on Saturday boys, and got a needed win. We shut down the swans when we needed it,only downside was that we had a fairly poor conversion in front of goal
- Liam Michael Harkin (posted 12/07/2009 3:37:25 PM)
Great win by the bombers. I feel sorry for Darcy Daniher though. With Hurley and Pears looking so good in defence, Daniher will struggle to get a game as a key back. He would be better trying to get a game as a key forward. Stanton was great, as he is most of the time. Haven't seen any comments complaining about his game. He has proved his critics wrong time and time again and it is time they got off his back. You know who you are people. Bulldogs have shown that pressure will hurt them, so we will need to tackle harder than ever next week, and if we do, winning will not be a problem.
- Andrew Bearpark (posted 12/07/2009 4:31:59 PM)
why cant we do this week in week out!!!
- Steve Colakidis (posted 12/07/2009 4:36:36 PM)
Why are people always picking on Stanton anyway? Look at his disposal effectiveness and Dane Swans, Chris Judds, Steve Johnsons and Leigh Montagna. They all have less disposal effectiveness than Brent Stanton. Stanton 74.3%, Swan 69.0%, Judd 70.2%, Montagna 72.9 yet Stanton is criticized. Even Ablett only has 76% effectiveness. Stop complaining about his disposal and start looking at his positives such as his incredible gut running.

- Terri Xuereb (posted 12/07/2009 11:59:52 PM)
Interesting atmosphere at the game. My first at the SCG. Maybe it was because we dominated most of the game but the home crowd were definitely out gunned by the sea of red & black supporters. The only time they were vocal was when Big Bad Barry did his lap. It was great to see such support for our boys in the Harbour City. Now lets make sure we out gun the Doggies at our Home match this week.
- Rob Fisher (posted 13/07/2009 3:11:00 AM)
Bloody SICK of 'so-called' supporters bagging our players. For some reason there are certain players at our club who can't do a thing right in some people's eyes. I sat in front of a few blokes on Saturday and all game they continually bagged Dyson, Stanton & McPhee. If they made a mistake they jumped all over it, shouting out obscenities to the respective players. Bloody hell, these players were a big factor in why we won the game. cont.
- Rob Fisher (posted 13/07/2009 3:24:02 AM)
cont. The gut running of Stanton, timely fist of McPhee or lace-out pass of Dyson doesn't rate a mention let alone the fact that if you get about 30 possessions a match you might make a few mistakes under pressure. The biggest problem with this sledging from 'our own' supporters is that it is reserved for those particular players. I saw plenty of mistakes by Ryder, Prismal, Hurley and I could go on but nothing was said to those players who made far more errors in the game. It's about time we supported the whole playing list each week.
- Rob Fisher (posted 13/07/2009 3:33:22 AM)
good to finally see the club get its recruiting right for the first time in a decade...pears, hurley, hooker are already showing they can play the game and hold down their positions. tayte pears u r a gun mate!!! and dempsey, dyson, winderlich are showing y they were kept on the list. well done boys
- afradopilious frette (posted 13/07/2009 9:16:12 AM)
Plenty of support at the game for the Dons! From where I was sitting, the swannie fans were very quiet compared to the red and black bandwagon. Only 30 thou at the ground. Highest crowd for the season so far at the SCG, but still a dismal turn out by the Harbour City. Pitiful way to send off Barry Hall. Top game bombers, all played well. Bring the "A" game to the Dogs.
- Nathan Smith (posted 13/07/2009 10:13:55 AM)
To all those who thought Mcphee, Dyson, Hooker, Stanton should have been dropped well they were outstanding today. Hooker gives so much more to the side because he is better than Bellchambers around the ground and can play back. I see room for improvement but lets keep the same 22 for the Dogs i really think our game style can match theirs and lets take them on we have a tough run home with St's, Dogs and then the showdown in rnd 22 with the Hawks, still a way to go with Port and Hawks still in contention but lets keep plugging away and make the finals.
- Dan Hines (posted 13/07/2009 11:24:56 AM)
Living/ working in Sydney this year, was great to go to game at SCG and see Bombers at least once this year. Sydney fans were very quiet. Dons played well , good team effort by all.Be ready for dogs next week boys they will be fired up after losing by 1 point they will want our blood , we can match em !

A very good win away...but a couple of real bad defensive errors (watch the game if you can't remember)...we had several players around the contest compared to the Swans and they kicked easy goals. This is an area of concern because it usually happens every week...in the past this has cost us games and in the future, well...

That's great Ivar, supporting the team around Australia, your love for the Bombers is obvious and admirable. But if you bothered to identify which of your comments riled quite a few of us in the Hangar, then you should understand why attempts were made to water down the level of treason trash comments that you and your buddy KG (aka Kurac G...) were sprouting... When you dump the unnecessary negative rubbish, you should enjoy so much more about our team's achievements, progress, success and future.Go Bombers!!

Explain what more you think the Essendon Football Club could do Amanda. I and 3 others booked our trip via Luxe Travel (a partner of the Essendon Football Club)and got great seats, great accommodation and they even provided a great win for us as well. The staff at Luxe were fantastic with great customer service and a credit their alliance with Essendon for allowing fans & members to book trips interstate to see their Bombers hassle free. I believe Essendon gets most things right when catering for their supporters, and their interstate supporters package is one of them. Go the Dons.
