Knights: We believe we can stop the Saints

There is no doubt in Matthew Knights' mind that his team can do what no other side has done in 2009 and defeat St Kilda when they clash at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Knights told the media this morning that his side has a huge respect for what the Saints have achieved this season but will exhaust every resource to secure a win this week.

“We are playing the top team on the ladder this Sunday and we have a lot of respect for them but we will do everything in our power to win the game and give our guys the belief that they can do it,” he said.

“St Kilda’s put in an enormous performance last week to go out and do what they did missing key players, but every week is a new week.

“Our players understand that St Kilda’s pressure skills are outstanding, we’d expect nothing less on Sunday then our players to come with the attitude to match that.

“We played a bit better last week playing a team that was on the edge of the top four, it would have been nice to get a winning result but we certainly played some better football which is promising.”

Last time the two sides met, the Bombers were unable to close the 19-point deficit after a slow start to the game with many wasted opportunities.

Knights says his side knows what to expect this time around.

“Last time they got off to a flying start, kicking the first five or six goals and slowly we reeled them in but their steadiness and their professionalism kept them that three or four goals in front,” he said.

“This group has that belief that we can match it this time around - our biggest challenge is doing it over four quarters. We can match good sides for periods but we haven’t nailed a good side over four quarters.

“St Kilda is so good at counter attacking from defence, when we do get the ball in our forward line we will have to make sure we score.

“We expect and will prepare for them to be full strength on Sunday. This afternoon in our planning meeting we will look at several areas of their game and try to work out how to stop them.

“We are not going into the match saying we are playing the top team, we are saying we are going to go out and win.”

It's hard to read when people criticize Matty and Scotty, to me it's just not on, they both would have won us many more games than cost us, I think Scotts time probably has come to an end, 270 games, 1 flag, 2 B&F's, nearly 500 goals, he is a superstar of our great club and the competition , as for this week, take 'em on Bomber boys, true supporters are always in for the long haul.

make sure you put the best players and essendon has to try their best in all areas. we would have been in the top 8 if we didnt loose to the bottom teams like west coast and richmond. they are the teams that are like 2nd last and we lost to them.. then when it came to a team that was 5th, we got a draw.. how does that work?? make sure you make the right decisions.. go bombers!!! i am going to the game and hoping for a good game like the brisbane one that i went to last week..

efc coaching staff are great. it's just that the players most of them are young and did not have much confidence, that's why they made a terrible decisions most of the time.com'on if you guys think knighta and the crew are not doing a great job,then something's wrong about your concept of team development.we all get frustrated in many occasion the way the boys played, but you cant blame knighta for that.you got to be kidding if you think sheeds is doing better job than knighta before he left the club.

diane - we may be having a spirited debate re knights on another blog, but I have to admit your comments re Scott Lucas are spot on. We've actually won 8 and a half games this year and been competitive in pretty much every game, so I'd say we've improved just nicely. I believe also that the season is still going scott? Pears has emerged as a player, so has hooker, Ryder, Watson and Pris. Dyson is more consistent, Dempsey & Winderlich have played their first full season, we've had no Hille all year... Mcveigh and welsh injured all year as well. Then there's a long line of talented youngsters who now have a few games under their belt and soon another pre-season... We've got nothing to whinge about!

i think we can definatly match it with the saints on sunday only if we play with the same intensity and spirit we have had against teams earlier this year. We have had some good wins this year, carlton twice, hawthorn, sydney, and who could forget the thriller on anzac day against collingwood, so come on bombers win this one and show those negative fans that there is something worth looking forward to in the future!

Common Mark Elze don't whinge about draft picks. Under Sheedy players like Allen, Murphy, Cole, Bradley, Alvey, Zantuck, Camporeale, etc. were drafted. That's why Essendon's list is where it is at today. 4/5 years of very poor drafting in the mid 2000's under Sheedy has badly hurt the Dons. It is only now that the seeds of recovery are starting to sprout.

I think there is a difference between being negative and being realistic. There is no chance we will win this game. I'll be attending the match with the hope we can at least provide a contest; that in itself will be a very tough task indeed. Just go for it Essendon...we are just not mentally there yet and because of this we will not make finals so we need a posative to go into 2010. Go Bombers! Give your all and play hard!

What is negative about reality? The way the Bombers are playing following the last four games, one would have to be a super optimist to pick Essendon to beat the Saints. We just don't have the players to match them. Sure, the players will try, but it asking a lot and Knights is being starry-eyed to think Essendon would win. A huge improvement is still required to beat the better sides now.

Don't get me wrong Diana Trask. If you support a team, That does not mean you agree blindly what they do or don't. You don't expect your team to win every week, but you expect them to do THEIR BEST every week regardless of winning or losing. I've been a ONE EYE bOMBER for 24yrs now and I know what i've been thruogh. I know what i'm talking about. The ST.Kilda TRAM is going faster than the V-LINE BOMB.

True supporters never put there team and coach down they always have faith that there team will make it sooner rather than later. I have supported the Bombers since I was 3 years old (58 years in total) and I have been through some great times and some very disappointing times but it will always be the Bombers for me. Give it your best shot on Sunday you are as good as any of the other top 8 teams just believe in yourselves, GO BOMBERS!!!

Jonnie Gety you should have said true supporters, because we all get along, its the not so loyal fans who bag our players that get up our nose. A true supporter sticks with their coach and players through thick and thin, thats the difference.
