Burgoyne decision expected within 48-hours

Port Adelaide says it will play hardball with ace midfielder Shaun Burgoyne and will have the ultimate say in which club he is traded to.

The Adelaide Advertiser has reported that Power football operations manager Peter Rohde declared: "The final decision will be ours, not Shaun's".

"Obviously we'll take into consideration where Shaun wants to go but in the end we need to do what's best for us," Rohde said.

After walking out on Port last week saying he wants to move to Melbourne for family reasons, Burgoyne is believed to be close to announcing which club he wants to go to.

It is reported he is leaning towards Hawthorn or the Bombers with media speculating the Hawks are more likely to secure the 26-year-old former All-Australian.

Burgoyne has also met with the Melbourne Demons who have the advantage of having the No. 1 selection at the pre-season draft if he cannot orchestrate the trade he wants.

"There's been no progression since late last night with Shaun," Rohde said.

"We expect to hear something in the next day or so and then we'll move forward. He'll nominate his preferred option and then we'll talk to them or anyone else who wants to talk to us.

"We've had a few clubs talk to us already but no-one's got down to any (trade) details yet, so we'll see what transpires."

The Advertiser says the Bombers could offer midfielder Andrew Lovett as trade bait for Burgoyne. Lovett is looking for a fresh start and Essendon has agreed to facilitate a trade.

Essendon also has selection No.10 in the November draft but the club has not commented on whether it would part with its first-round selection.

Hawthorn has said publicly it is prepared to offer its first-round selection (No.9 overall) and another pick for Burgoyne. Port is understood to want premiership midfielder Jordan Lewis but he appears off limits.

"The bottom line is that we will not give Shaun away easily," Rohde said.

"Either Shaun can convince us to deal him to the club of his choice or we can convince him to deal with another club that suits us."

Essendon general manager of football operations Paul Hamilton recently said on essendonfc.com.au that the club has had fruitful discussions with Burgoyne.

"Now we just have to wait and see if he wants to come to the Bombers and if we can secure a suitable deal," he said.

Not sure why Port is trying to play hardball here when he is out of contract and he can nominate for the pre-season draft and they would get nothing. he would be a handy inclusion in the Essendon midfield.

I want Burgoyne to come to Essendon with all my heart. BOMBERS 2010!

We must move heaven and earth to get Shaun's services - he is agreat clearance player and a very intelligent footballer- he would combine with Jobe and Patty to be an elite midfield.

Thanks for the update EFC.com.au Best website in the AFL!

Andrew its because Port are stupid. They did the same thing with Stevens and got nothing for him.
- Greg Kemp (posted 22/09/2009 11:14:23 AM)
If a straight swap can be done then Knights and DUDoro don't stuff this up. Like you normally do. You lot are eroding this great club. KNIGHTS you are at Essendon now NOT Richmond mate. Regards Ivar.

Must do something/recruit someone to replace Lovett. I agree with the decsion to trade him if he's not happy at Essendon and wants 500K. With that said, we're kidding ourselves if we think The Bombers can get away with not replacing the pace and skills in brought to the table in 2009. Especially with the brand of football we're trying to play... Burgoyne seems logical.
- Rowan T (posted 22/09/2009 11:24:42 AM)
If essendon give uo there first round draft pick for burgoyne we may as well just stop this whole "Youth Policy" Knights has implemented and start just drafting relativly good middle aged players than recriuting young players with the potentila to become stars.
- christopher seaman (posted 22/09/2009 11:30:46 AM)
i would be happy to give lovett and our 1st round pick for burgoyne simply on the fact that lovett is gone and that this is a shallow draft so we wont be missing out on to much. we will be able to trade some players for pick the following year to the gold coat. but lovett and 1st round pick seems to be a good deal for shaun and enough for port to accept.
- Nick Holdsworth (posted 22/09/2009 12:05:13 PM)
Agree with you Ivar, straight swap for Lovett,no draft picks included but if Burgoyne`s asking the same cash as Lovett was then don`t worry bout it,go for a low draft instead
- mawby Ian (posted 22/09/2009 12:06:33 PM)
Burgoyne is definitely worth getting, he is a quality midfielder and we need that depth. Clubs are playing 10 - 12 midfielders these days and we must improve in this area. A fare trade would be Lovett and our 2nd round pick. The draft isn't that deep this year but 10 should be sacred.
- Brett Gillow (posted 22/09/2009 12:12:30 PM)
lovett wants to come home to w.a
- Cohlby Giblett (posted 22/09/2009 12:22:52 PM)
send lovett and pick 10 to freo and get pick 4, id rather pick 4 than burgoyne anyday
- Travis Cusack (posted 22/09/2009 12:41:59 PM)
Lovett is not good for Essendon. The difference between him and Michael Long is simply what they have ABOVE their shoulders. Lovett is a nuisance to the team's cohesion, he is a bad example to the younger players and as skillful as he is, it's time for him to go. LET'S GRAB BURGOYNE - he's exactly what we need!!!!!
- Ashley Krongold (posted 22/09/2009 1:07:48 PM)
Give them Lovett+ Pick 23 for Burgoyne then give Burgoyne number 13. Done deal
- Ben Gardner (posted 22/09/2009 1:11:26 PM)
thats why C.Gibiett that Freo will get him and we`ll end up with Chris.T
- mawby Ian (posted 22/09/2009 1:32:40 PM)
Probably wont get Burgoyne if Port has a say in it. Just don`t get ripped off in the trade. Hey Ivar, when you say "you lot" what are the names you mean. Come on cough up your hatred of the people within the club. Loyal, you are not.
- Cory Williams (posted 22/09/2009 1:48:37 PM)
how about we trade some of our "loyal" supporters like ivar, maybe not so much a trade as we catapult them over the border! lovett for burgoyne seems a fair trade for both clubs melbourne are better served looking for young guns, which leaves essendon/hawthorn...we have a tendancy to win these!
- David Mitchell Mitchell (posted 22/09/2009 1:53:38 PM)
If Lovett & another club belive he is worth $500K+ a year then they must also be saying he is worth a first round draft pick. Essendon can trade Lovett to WA or Sydney and get a 1st round pick to help get Burgoyne or any other quality midfielder with 2 top 10 picks, although I'm not convinced that Burgoyne is as good as think he is with a knee problem and no real form this year based on Brownlow votes etc. Suggest Bombers stay true to youth policy with last true draft this year. Go Bombers in 2010. Charlie
- Charles Taylor (posted 22/09/2009 1:54:22 PM)
if we get burgoyne then im happy, straight swap for lovett. The hawks dont have anyone to give to port except for 2 draft picks so i reckon we're a pretty good chance to recruit him.
- Noah Smyth (posted 22/09/2009 2:09:52 PM)
It should be noted that Lovett is in fact a Melbourne boy. He did play some footy in WA but is a born and bred Victorian.
- Essendon Insider (posted 22/09/2009 2:21:14 PM)
Agree with Travis Cusack .... Lovett and pick 10 to Freo for pick 4 would be a good result. A good draft choice should be our priority this year. With talk of a 2 year offer from the Bulldogs for Lloyd, the Bombers should try and get a swap for Lloyd and Everitt. Everit is apparently out of favour with Bulldogs and could be a handy pick up !!
- Charles Taylor (posted 22/09/2009 2:26:47 PM)
i always read these comments and then have a little chuckle to myself .why would we want to recruit burgoys. is he going to play for the same money than what we pay lovett.why not pay lovett more & end of story.. reminds me of that great trade deal involving raines/richo and losing carey/bradbury. walk and dont look back...
- Charlie Monforte (posted 22/09/2009 2:32:39 PM)
Sir Ivar Biggen this once proud club is going into damage control as the gamble with knights has back fired. Can I also demand my comments be in black and red from now on as I'm no collingwood fan. The broken down bus that is knights coaching will force may of the hierarchy at essendon to look for new jobs as our supporter base dries up like our on field success.....
- steve rendevski (posted 22/09/2009 2:40:43 PM)
we need him! do whatever we can to get him to essendon in 2010!!
- Jason Grech (posted 22/09/2009 2:48:18 PM)
Shaun's defenently worth considering although I'd also look at Robert Eddy,Matt Maguire,Andrejs Everitt,Marty Clarke,Brett Peake,Beau Waters, and serveral others before commiting to Shaun as the club will do although I'd be reluctent to trade pick 10
- Simon Mayo (posted 22/09/2009 2:51:45 PM)
Absolute suicide to trade Matthew Lloyd. I can't believe I have even read that here! Disgraceful.
- Kymmy Hinton (posted 22/09/2009 2:57:13 PM)
We shouldn't offer anything more than a straight swap! Lovett's star is rising and Burgoyne's knee is still an unknown even with reports of a positive prognosis.
- Peter Venn (posted 22/09/2009 3:15:19 PM)
Hey 'Essendon Insider' good to hear from you. Would have liked to hear from you when things really mattered, not whether Lovett is in fact a Melbourne boy or not. Tell us what's really going on with Lloyd and Knighter...go Dons!!!
- David Husk (posted 22/09/2009 3:24:52 PM)
mr essendon insider is true that essendon is looking to get sam power from north melbourne because we dont need 2 waste anything valuable for a player that wouldnt even be good enough to be on our rookie list i hope this is not true?
- Nick Holdsworth (posted 22/09/2009 3:49:09 PM)
LOVETT IS NO FUTURE STAR, HE IS A LIABILITY..... ALONG WITH HIS MATE ALWYN DAVEY.....
- Dave Davo (posted 22/09/2009 4:30:47 PM)
Agree with Travis Cusack and Charles Taylor.... Lovett and pick 10 to Freo for pick 4 would be a good result. Just a short remainder Essendon The YOUTH POLICY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Darren Sammut (posted 22/09/2009 4:48:46 PM)
What ever you do EFC 'DON'T GIVE UP PICK 10'! Burgoyne's worth considering, however maybe look at Lovett (seeing 'he' wants leave)and pick 26 to freo for their pick 4 - or west coasts' pick 7. Everitt worth looking at and Stanton save for trade bate next year for gold coast - first round pick?!

YOUTH POLICY ESSENDON
- Darren Sammut (posted 22/09/2009 4:51:09 PM)
No other club is going to pay Lovett 500k. So does it really matter, its not the money he will not get what he wants and is still leaving. Its Knights and his merry men who are ruining the club, its all starting to look like Richmond and Wallace circus, all they need is the drums and the circus is on. Also Essendon INSIDER if the club is fair dinkum let the supporters know exactly whats going on. This will stop negative talk and be fair for all, if you want membership next year, call it as it REALLY is.
- Peter Pischek (posted 22/09/2009 4:52:10 PM)
LOVETT IS FROM PRESTON SO NOT SURE WHERE IN W.A. HE IS MEANT TO BE GOING HOME TO. WONT BURGOYNE WANT $500K ALSO?
- rob davies (posted 22/09/2009 5:05:07 PM)
I used to boast to supporters of other clubs, saying things like "good clubs don't sack coaches in the middle of a season" "we look after our champions" "Essendon is the most professional club in the league". Don't get me wrong I still love my club but unfortunately I can't boast anymore. Sad to see us change our morales so much.
- Ron Mercer (posted 22/09/2009 5:30:24 PM)
Kymmy Hinton !!! Not sure where you have been but Lloyd is the one who is going to decide if he stays or not. If he chooses to leave (he's uncontracted so can do as he pleases)then Essendon should try and get something as a trade. If he's true to his own words in the Age (Sat)then he has no choice but to stay a Bomber or retire. But if he's being untruthfull & wants to go to another club then he should go & the Bombers should try and get something for him. I want loyal team focused players at Essendon. No one is bigger than the club and that includes Lloyd.
- Charles Taylor (posted 22/09/2009 5:38:06 PM)
Losing Lovett's line breaking pace and clean disposal is going to suck, but Burgoyne would be an awesome replacement. Jobe is in deperate need of some help winning the contested ball and a good decision maker and skillful player like Burgoyne would be an ideal fit. My only concern is selling our soul (draft pick 10) for a 27 year old with a suspect knee.
- Nick Forrest (posted 22/09/2009 6:19:28 PM)
ist it funny how all year we have been writing in here and with no response from the club and as soon as the season is over they start talking whats going on there.
- Brett Martin (posted 22/09/2009 6:24:51 PM)
good luck getting burgs we have no hope we have been in this situation many times before and DuDoro and his muppets always blow it.i heard burgs wants to play with davey lol what for Bendigo lol
- Brett Martin (posted 22/09/2009 6:32:28 PM)
The same 4 are at it again, Ivar, Peter, Steve and Davo. You lot know nothing. Peter, your asking the Ess insider to tell us whats going on, yet you still bag Knights, how does that make sense. Also, the negative talk will allways come from you lot no matter what. Pathetic is your discrimination of our coach.
- Cory Williams (posted 22/09/2009 6:32:32 PM)
Hopefully we can trade Ivar for Burgoyne..we call all be happy
- Scott McNeice (posted 22/09/2009 6:54:00 PM)
Who is Rhode kidding?? Melbourne will dictate where Burguoyne will finish up.All essendon has to do is better melbourne's offer!!For what it's worth (NOTHING)!!it isLovett or 1st rnd pick for Burgoyne not both.(perhaps another player put up in the deal).Prefer a 1st rnd for Lovett or Shuey from WC (couldn't think of anyone with a better reason to be home closer to family).Dont get sucked in ;stick with developing youth.
- andrew bryce (posted 22/09/2009 6:56:17 PM)

- Matthew Holloway (posted 22/09/2009 7:06:11 PM)
burgoyne is definately not worth lovett & a draft pick a re you all daft. How long do you think he will last, couple of years.I want a player that is going to be there for ten years, the same age as hurley pears so he can grow with the team & players.Dont forget the next couple of years draft will be compromised so when he leaves who do we have.Diane
- Diane Trask (posted 22/09/2009 7:24:11 PM)
Lovett is a disgrace to the EFC. It's time to move on as your last month showed that you have no ticker! Let's go for Burgoyne with a straight swap for Lovett. Hold on to your Draft picks Bombers as this deal would be a win-win scenario for both clubs.
- Noel Spiteri (posted 22/09/2009 7:57:14 PM)
Hear, hear, Travis Cusack.........the most sensible thing I have read on here for a while! Stuff Burgoyne, not worth the money (or a top 10 pick). Would rather stick with youth than bring in anything to do with Port......they are a rabble! GO BOMBERS!!!!!!!!!!
- Chris Crooks (posted 22/09/2009 8:03:29 PM)
I heard today that Lloyd has been offered a 2 year deal with the Bulldogs and that Everitt's name was in the mix as a possible trade. Surely we can do better than this!!! This would certainly bite us on the a.. as he would kick 60-70 goals next season playing OUT OF THE SQUARE and with better delivery from a decent midfield.
- Noel Spiteri (posted 22/09/2009 8:04:19 PM)
Jury may be out a little on Gumbleton, but our recent (past 8 years) of Top 10 Draft picks doesn't read to well. Laycock, Bradley, Myers, Gumbleton; with Ryder and Hurley the only successes to date. Done a lot better elevating rookies, and later in the draft. Bit of a lottery, Burgoyne is proven topliner -get him before trading for higher picks.
- Peter Venn (posted 22/09/2009 8:19:39 PM)
To Ivar, why do u always blame Knights for what happens at the club, it is management who will decide what happens with trade deals.
- Scott Polden (posted 22/09/2009 8:24:31 PM)
Steven salopek would be a good fit for the bombers, hopefully the bombers can get him somehow, i think he wants to come home.
- Michael Bear (posted 22/09/2009 8:44:24 PM)
No chance of a straight swap with Lovett imo. Port have asked for either Lewis or Ladson from Hawthorn, that is the type of player they are after.
- Nathan Beever (posted 22/09/2009 8:54:03 PM)
I reckon if we are looking to add experience by getting Burgoyne we should offer Lovett and Nash to secure Burgoyne. I don't think it is all about money but more about relocating to melbourne because of family. Burgoyne's experience would be invaluable to a youthful team.
- Nathan Bloomfield (posted 22/09/2009 8:54:55 PM)
to those that reckon lovett and pick 10 should be traded for burgoyne...areyou serious?? the fact that the draft is shallow just means top 10 picks will even be more valuable! and burgoyne with a dodgy knee...lovett straight swap would be maximum offer! even then port might be getting the better deal... like the idea of lovett plus second round pick to freo for pick 4 though.
- Den Wang (posted 22/09/2009 9:19:05 PM)
Lovett to Freo for Brett Peake and Freo's second round draft pick. Peake is younger, tougher, big engine and just as quick. Peake is looking to move to melbourne, has guts and he won't put any pressure on our salary cap. Forget Burgoyne he wants to go to Hawthorn, will want a huge salary and has a dicky knee.
- neil Sinclair (posted 22/09/2009 10:59:46 PM)
Don't give anything up to Port! Wait for the draft. Keep Lovett, he's an Essendon boy and if he can see his way through to enjoying footy with the club again, he should stay. He needs to lower his price though!
- Richard Hayward (posted 23/09/2009 12:10:51 AM)
port owes us a player how many essendon players were traded to them there was wanganeen hardwick and a few other players to i cant remember and they even took mark williams from us too when he was our resevers coach so they should give us burgoyne
- Norman Cacciattolo (posted 23/09/2009 12:23:45 AM)
With Lloyds retirement, we'll need the experience. Get Burgoyne.
- Peter Venn (posted 23/09/2009 12:51:24 AM)
To be honest, Id rather get Josh Gibson than Burgoyne. As good as he is, I still think the defence needs a leak plugged and our midfield has enough quality coming through. I'd welcome him though.

Definately push for freo's pick 4 by giving them Lovett and pick 10 - would be a good result. Don't like the idea of losing pick 10 for a 'mature-aged' player (Burgoyne).

Now with lloyd gone I definately dont want SB,stay with the youth policy as dont think will challenge for grandfinal for at least 2 to 3 yrs.SB could be gone by then so get a 10yr player. We are on track. To those people that will say they wont renew their membership. Please dont,I am sure richmond or collingwood would love to have your company and think you would be betted suited to one of those clubs. Now let the punches fly as I am prepared and will back my club up as you apparently dont.Diane
- Diane Trask (posted 23/09/2009 11:13:33 AM)
Given Essendon's recent history with sticking with injury prone players and the luck they've had with recovery etc, Burgoyne is a definite no-no. If Lloyd was still there for another season or two, it might have been worth the gamble for a premiersip. With him gone it's time to start the re-building phase....again. First step, remove Knights.
- Steve Dobbyn (posted 23/09/2009 11:27:13 AM)

I am very disappointed to see Lloyd go, i still think he had two years and 100 goals in him. A straight up swap for Lovett and Burgoyne would be good, but if this deal cant be reached I really like the idea of swapping Lovett and a second round pick for pick 4. what do you guys think about using Jay Nash or a Leroy Jetta as trade bait?
- Richard Black (posted 23/09/2009 2:57:05 PM)
what is with all these people bagging knights can you honestly say that someone else could've done a better job? Was there any body else more qualified for the job and liked by the coaching selectors when sheeds finished? Is it because he's from Richmond? So was sheedy.... At the end of the day it's all up to the players if we win or lose. Do you really think that all the decisions made for the club are entirely up to him? If you want to bag this great club your obviously not a true Essendon supporter!!!!!!!
- Chris Flynn (posted 23/09/2009 4:49:58 PM)
Fingers crossed - we've messed up every other possible big pick up in recent years. Agree 100% that Jetta should be used to trade. Not sad to see Lovett go after seeing him "Pull up short" in a couple of instances in the Adelaide final. (not that he was alone in that!)
- Francis Connolly (posted 23/09/2009 6:05:02 PM)
the person we should be swaping is KNIGHTS for another COACH, and leave lovett alone he is good for our running team, looks like KNIGHT is trying to under the CLUB. P.STANCOMBE.

- Brett Martin (posted 23/09/2009 6:48:45 PM)
ENOUGH BLAMING OF KNIGHTS, like many essendon fans i never thought sheeds shud hav gone, but knights has been good for the club, in 2009 he: took an injury ravaged side to the finals, built a solid defence, brought on some clear prospects in hurley, pears, zaharakis, hooker, got some players to step up in watson, ryder, monfries, winderlich, & has outlined a strong midfield which burgoyne wud enhance. its a shame lovett is leaving yet understandable, he hasnt been untroubled at essendon & a fresh bunch of faces for him could be highly benificial to him personally!
- David Mitchell Mitchell (posted 23/09/2009 7:00:12 PM)
Very sad news about Lloyd. Good luck Matty. I think we should try and get high picks for lovett; equally consider trading Jetta and Nash. Definitely should aspire to keep pick 10 and 26 unless we can get something higher by way of trading a player in addition. Although we won't get great picks in the coming years with Gold Coast and etc. could draft with them if certain players don't lift their game.
- Laz Zaekis (posted 23/09/2009 8:15:16 PM)

Burgoyne would be an asset to EFC midfield. He can run with the ball & actually hit someone on the chest unlike the likes of stanton, dyson & co.. we need him to be the go to player for watson & prismall. Go all out to get him.. the lovett situation is ideal & possibly 2nd round pick or like the freo option for lovett as well. Lloydy, thanks for the memories as you will always be an ESSENDON CHAMPION!!

Righto you lot, settle down. Might have some in late here, but have we decided which 5 players are to be cut from the list? Lloyd & Lucas retired. Names like Nash & Laycock come to mind. Jetta has little trade val imo, the other player to go will probably be Williams....Thoughts

Of course we didnt get him, same old story

Essendon's recent record with soft tissue injury management means Burgoyne would be a risk. We don't want Peake from Freo - he turns the ball over too much and we don't need any more help in that area. Corey Jones from North would be worth a trade.

Bob Cooling YOU ARE WAY OUT OF LINE

I love these Vic Essendon supporters claiming Port is a 'rabble'. Let's get a good WIN-LOSS ratio against them first. Why,do they beat us? Guys like Shaun B. Several times I've seen 1st hand Welsh & 2 other players try to tag him out of the game. He was B.O.G.

Hey Glenda Woof I did tell Knights what I thought of his coaching to his face at a game. I got no problem telling people face to face of what I think of them. I ain't no shrinking violet. He didn't acknowledge me and just looked away. Must have known I was right. Regards Ivar.

Ivar, you attending night school?Where are you "picking up" this new found intelligence from... NOT.. and you wonder why the administator won't post all your stuff... do you really have to ask why???? Most "supporters" of the EFC who do "support" their club,(even when they don't agree with everything posted by others, but disagree in a "respectful" manner)all know why "little ivar" can't have his "little" say every time...oohh booo hooo... :-)
