Essendon confirmed its status as a VFA powerhouse when it won the 1894 premiership.

The team remained unbeaten in 17 games before losing the final game of the year to Geelong, ending the club’s 56-game unbeaten run which had commenced in 1892.

It was the longest unbeaten streak by any club to that time. For the third consecutive season Thurgood topped the Association’s goalkicking list with 63 goals, one fewer than the year before.
