Beneficial Break

Defender Michael Hurley believes the club's eight-day break between games and a refreshed outlook at the club will help the Bombers back-up their stirring round one performance when they meet Hawthorn on Sunday.

Hurley enjoyed the most productive and injury-free season of his career in 2014, playing 21 games. His switch to the backline helped on that front and he settled into a key defnsive role, where he used his power, aggression and smarts to dominate opponents. Towards the end of the season, his confidence grew, and he began taking the game on more and delivering the ball well. Hurley seems well placed for a big 2015.

Season By Season

The Essendon star had a frustrating season in 2013, with several injuries limiting his output. An ankle concern, then concussion, and more issues with his ankle and wrist made for a difficult year, but in between he made some telling contributions for the Bombers. He looks set to again play as a forward in 2014, but last year was swung to defence occasionally to great effect, including a role in the second half against Carlton's Jarrad Waite in round 11. When fit, Hurley is perhaps Essendon's most important player and he will be looking for more injury luck after ankle and wrist reconstructions in the off-season.
