Van Unen is a tall defender with a good leap who can read the pay well across the back half of the ground. He has great agility, is quick and has the flexibility to play either small or tall. Playing for Frankston in the VFL last season he showed he is a good decision maker on the last line of defence and is able to keep a cool head under pressure.
