Essendon coach James Hird has revealed star quartet Dyson Heppell, Jake Carlisle (ankle), Dustin Fletcher (groin) and Michael Hurley (ankle) were close to being passed fit for Saturday's clash with GWS.

2012 was the break-out year for Carlisle. His consistency in the back-line didn’t go unnoticed, named the NAB Rising Star nominee in round 9. While Jake spent the majority of his time on the last line of defence, he also enjoyed the odd cameo role up forward. Fearless around packs and a strong contested mark, Carlisle’s impressive season was cut short with a foot injury in round 19.
