Watson capped a magnificent year by winning the Brownlow Medal, the Bombers' first since James Hird shared the award with Michael Voss in 1996. He was also the runaway winner of the Crichton Medal, his third best and fairest in the past four seasons. Tough and durable, he led Essendon in disposals (638 at 29 a game) and clearances (154) and pushed forward to kick a career best 20 goals. Just under half his disposals were contested, showing how hard he worked. One of the most respected leaders and players in the AFL, underlined by the AFL Players' Association voting him the best captain in the competition.

Season by Season

A brilliant start to the season – Watson began in career-best form, averaging 29 disposals a game and kicking 13 goals in the opening eight rounds – was cut short by two hamstring injuries. He still finished the year in fourth position in the best and fairest, despite missing six games. The tough and clever Bombers captain wins his own ball at the clearances and sets up teammates.
