Gumbleton's serious back surgery at the end of 2011 meant he trained sparingly over summer, instead completing his own 'mini' pre-season before making a comeback to the AFL in 2012. He played his first senior game in nearly two years when he returned against Port Adelaide in round 16, booting three goals. He finished with six games and 11 goals. Despite longer deals on offer from rival clubs, Gumbleton showed his loyalty by agreeing to a new one-year deal to remain at the club until at least the end of 2013.

Failed to play a senior match in 2011 after a knee problem in the pre-season limited his preparation for the home and away season. The former No. 2 draft pick then suffered on-going hamstring and back injuries. Played 10 games and kicked 10 goals in the VFL.
