2010 Preview

The Tasmanian enjoyed possibly the best of his four AFL seasons last year, giving the Bombers an injection of hardness around the football and applying good defensive pressure. Can play forward in lead-up roles if required, and is prepared to sacrifice his game in any given assignment for the benefit of the team.

Career Profile

Sam Lonergan is a hard-working mid-fielder from Tasmania who gained All-Australian U18 honours and won the Tassie Mariners' Best and Fairest award for two consecutive years.

He spent most of season 2006 in the Bendigo Bombers but finally made his debut that year against St Kilda in Round 15. He suffered knee problems in 2007 and did not play a senior game.

Lonergan had a great year in 2008, playing 19 games of tough, aggressive football and marked himself as a young player to watch.

He continued this good form in 2009, playing 17 games and kicking 10 goals.

He continued to play consistent football, playing 17 games in 2009 and 16 in 2010. His 50th game came in round 18 when Essendon had a memorable second win for the year over St Kilda.

Draft History: 2005 NAB AFL Draft, 3rd round selection (Essendon) No. 50 overall
