2010 PreviewA lifelong Essendon fan, Zaharakis made a memorable start to his career at Windy Hill last year, earning a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination after his first game and winning the Anzac Day game with a long goal in the dying seconds. Endured groin problems towards the end of the year, but the club is hoping a good pre-season will ensure the midfielder capitalises on his promising start.Career ProfileDavid Zaharakis lived what must be many a junior footballer’s dream when he kicked the winning goal with seconds to spare in the 2009 Anzac Day game against Collingwood at the MCG in front of a capacity crowd. It was only his fourth game of AFL football and his first AFL goal, but one that will be remembered by him and thousands of people for years to come. He played 10 games in his debut season appearing in every game from round 2 through to 11, before succumbing to injury.Zaharakis was Essendon's second pick in the national draft. As a lifelong Essendon supporter he was delighted to be recruited by the Bombers and very happy to receive Damien Peverill’s old number 11 guernsey, the number he wore throughout his junior career. Zaharakis is regarded as a quick and skilful midfielder who the club hopes will form part of the emerging new Essendon engine room for many years to come. He has leadership potential and is an exciting prospect.
