2010 Preview

After the highs of 2008 and a club best and fairest, the imposing ruckman was dealt the lows of a knee reconstruction and a lengthy rehabilitation last year, going down early in the Anzac Day match against Collingwood. The club is hopeful of Hille being ready for round one, and if he can return to near his best, will form a devastating ruck combination with the athletic Patrick Ryder.

Career Profile

David Hille was named in the TAC Cup Team of the Year in 1999, and was picked up in the National Draft that year by Essendon at pick number 40.

He debuted for Essendon in Round 8, 2001 against Melbourne and managed six senior games for the season. His best performance for the year was against St Kilda in Round11 against the experienced Peter Everitt.

Hille shared the rucking duties in 2002 with Paul Salmon and Steve Alessio, finishing with 19 games for the year.

He took over the senior ruck position during 2003 and played in every game for the season. His ability to run and kick goals earned him the Most Improved Player award for 2003.

Hille played all but one game in 2004 and continued to show verstaility in both the ruck and the forward line.

He was injured for the first seven rounds of the 2005 season but upon his return to the senior team, made sure his presence was felt. He filled the rucking role in the absence of the injured Matthew Allan and proved his importance to the team by his experience and brilliant pieces of play in the ruck and his influence around the midfield. When needed, he was also able to show that he was could be an effective target in the forward line.

Hille's maturity, both as a player and a leader, were recognised in early 2006 when he was appointed as acting captain to take over in the absence of the injured Matthew Lloyd.

He made headlines in the Round 17 clash against the Brisbane Lions when their ruckman, Jamie Charman, fell heavily in a contest injuring his shoulder. In a memorable act of sportsmanship Hille stopped, and leaning over Charman, signalled the Brisbane medical staff for help as Charman's own team-mates ran past.

Hille was named Vice-Captain when Matthew Lloyd returned from injury.

He capped off a fine 2008 season by winning the Crichton Medal as the Club's Best and Fairest.
