He made his debut for Essendon in Round 1, 2004, playing a total of 15 senior games and was nominated for the NAB Rising Star award that year. He played mainly on the wing and in the midfield, and kicked six goals in his debut season.In 2005 Stanton played 19 eye-catching games and displayed a style of hard-running from the midfield. He underlined his burgeoning talent with a 25-disposal, 10-mark, and two-goal display against Collingwood in Round 16. He was chosen to play in the International Rules series in 2006, and in 2007 had a superb year which was By 2008, Stanton had become an integral part of Essendon's midfield.
