The Essendon hierarchy was again impressed with Monfries’ work rate in 2009, with the South Australian showing a great ability to lead, crumb and apply pressure in the forward line. Took 116 marks and booted 25 goals for the year, being rewarded with another top-10 finish in the best and fairest. With increased fitness, could move into the midfield this year.

Career Profile

Angus Monfries made a good impression with the Essendon fans in his first year of AFL football.

He made his senior debut in Round 1, 2005, and went on to play 12 impressive games for the year. Although still lightly framed, Monfries lacks nothing in courage. His attack on the ball and his skills have impressed team-mates and fans alike. Another feature of his game is his ability to lay important tackles on opponents.

Monfries cemented his part in the team with courage and the ability to pop up and score goals. He played 21 games in 2006 followed by 20 and 19 games in 2007 and 2008.

He became a damaging small forward, capable of taking a great mark over taller and stronger opponents. His consistent form saw him play 21 games in 2009 and 17 in 2010, including his 100th game in round 9 against Richmond.
