Essendon has won their third game of the season in the VFL defeating Sandringham by 62 points in front of a few thousand red and black fans at Windy Hill.

The game made a slow start before Nick O’Brien kicked the Bombers first midway through the first quarter and the goals flowed from there with the Bombers taking a 21 point lead into quarter time with goals to Gleeson, Colyer and Dalgleish

The second quarter started much the same with early goals to the Bombers and an eventual big win was on the cards, but Sandringham wouldn’t go away as they managed to string a few goals just before the half time break.

A number of senior listed Bombers continued to push claims for a recall to the AFL side with Tayte Pears, Kyle Hardingham and Jackson Merrett among the best.

Pears collected 24 disposals and 8 marks in another imposing display across the half back line alongside Kyle Hardingham (22 disposals and 8 marks).

Coach Hayden Skipworth said it was exciting for the side to finally get a win at home.

“We have had close losses by under two goals and I don’t think we have had a win at home either so great result for the club and all the boys that played today to get the win and hopefully get some confidence and momentum in the back half of the year.”

Sandringham came out looking the goods early in the third quarter and reduced the margin to seven points before a flourish of goals from Dell’Olio, Bate and a third to Gleeson drew the margin out to 34 points at the last change, almost putting the game beyond doubt.

The last quarter was all the Bombers. Colyer’s second goal of the day was a stunner with four running bounces from the half back flank to finish from 50 on the run which all but shut the door on Sandringham. A few late goals to the Bombers drew the margin to the biggest of the day, a comfortable 62 point win.

Essendon now turns its attention to Willaimstown next Sunday afternoon from 2pm at Burbank Oval.
