Matthew Leuenberger and Nathan Grima moved a step closer to making their Essendon debuts on the weekend.

The pair played their first full games in a VFL practice match against Geelong.

Leuenberger was particularly important in the win, starring in the ruck and moving forward to provide a target in front of goals.

The big man showed very little signs of an injury interrupted pre-season, moving freely finishing the day with 13 possessions and a goal.

Speaking on Monday morning, Line Coach Guy McKenna said Leuenberger’s performance over the weekend indicated  he has progressed well from his injury and would be considered by Coaches for the round one clash against Gold Coast.

“Matty Leuenberger has been building post Christmas after his injury,” McKenna said.

“His performance was first rate on the weekend so he certainly could be a chance.”

Grima was used in defence alongside younger teammates Aaron Francis, Alex Morgan and Aaron Heppell.

The ex-Kangaroo was crucial in directing play and ensuring his teammates were where they needed to be to put pressure on the opposition.

While he ran out the entire game, Grima’s short pre-season may mean he has to spend a few extra weeks in the VFL before being ready for senior selection.

“Nathan Grima has only been within the group for three or four weeks so it’s a big ask,” McKenna said.

“He’s a natuarally fit ‘fella’ – so he tells us – and he performed well on the weekend.”

McKenna remained positive at the team’s recovery session this morning , maintaining the team were by no means panicking after two big losses in the NAB Challenge.

Instead, the Midfield Line Coach praised the young team for their preparation and attitude towards the game.

McKenna also addressed the suggestion opposition teams may decide to rest players when they come up against Essendon during the season.

“That’s their prerogative.  If they want to do that, good luck,” said McKenna

“In my previous life I’ve seen that happen and sides win, so that’s their choice.

“I haven’t heard any Coach say that, I haven’t heard a player from any Club say that  - is that heresay?  Is it a rumour?  I don’t know.

“All we can do is focus on what we have to do.  And we have to build our ability to defend better and to score better.”

The team will now shift its focus to preparing for the opening game of the season against the Gold Coast Suns next week.
