Nick Kommer says his form and fitness is getting back to AFL standard after another injury interrupted season and intense mid season training block.

The 25 year-old was taken out of VFL games against Sandringham and Werribee and with two byes either side, took part in a four week training block with fitness staff.

Kommer was amongst the Bombers best players in their 23-point win over Frankston on Sunday in just his second game back after the layoff.

“It was good for the first half, in the second half they came after us a bit – we didn’t get as many forward entries as we would have liked but overall it was a pretty positive game for the boys,” Kommer said.

The training block was designed for Kommer to overcome ongoing issues with his troublesome knee in the hope of adding to his two AFL games earlier this season.

“I feel really good and have got a yard or two of pace back and a bit of zip around the contest, it’s been pretty good since the training block,” he said.

“I feel like I have definitely improved from where I was at six weeks ago, I feel stronger around the ball and have more confidence in my ability to sprint hard and change direction.

“I’ve noticed improvement most probably getting back after you lead up and don’t get used, turning on a dime basically and getting back as quick as you can.

“Just that change of direction and accelerating that’s been the biggest difference, I’ve got that now so hopefully I can build on that.”

Since being picked up with pick 73 in the 2012 AFL Draft, Kommer played 19 games for the Bombers in 2013 but didn’t play any in 2014 and 2015 missing mostly with the knee tendonitis.

Kommer played in this seasons win over Melbourne and against Port Adelaide in the senior team as well as eight matches with the VFL.

A return to the AFL is the goal for the crafty forward.

“I think I’m nearly there, a couple more games and I think I’ll be ready. I’m feeling like I’m reading the ball better and getting in staying in the games which is really good,” he said.
