Essendon Football Club congratulates Kevin Sheedy on being elevated to a Legend in the AFL Hall of Fame.

Sheedy joins the illustrious group of legends, ten years after he was inducted into football royalty.

The 70-year-old joins Bill Hutchison, Dick Reynolds and John Coleman as the fourth Essendon figure to be elevated to Legend status.

Chairman, Lindsay Tanner, said Sheedy’s role in growing the game is immeasurable.

“On behalf of the Essendon family, we congratulate Kevin Sheedy on his elevation to Legend status,” Tanner said.

“Kevin’s list of achievements extend well beyond the four premierships he delivered our club. He is the master of marketing who took Essendon from a small suburban club, to a national brand with more than a million supporters.”

“Not only did Sheeds inspire his players, he inspired generations of football fans, administrators, media and community leaders of the power and beauty of our great game.

“It could be argued his role as a promoter of the game has surpassed what he achieved as a player and coach.

“Sheeds continues to use his powerful voice to champion change for minority groups and important causes. His creation of blockbuster games ANZAC Day, Dreamtime at the ‘G and Country Game continue to educate us of our history while also raising vital awareness.”

“Sheed’s helped the giants take their first big steps, is on an endless odyssey to grow the game across the nation, while also pursuing his passion to see our Indigenous game grow overseas.

“As a club and a code we owe so much to the brilliant mind of Kevin Sheedy, but we should hold our applause. He may be 70, but knowing Sheeds, he still has plenty to give.”
