Wilson Berry says the slow start against Geelong on Sunday was expected, before Essendon VFL produced a comfortable 42-point victory to extend its winning streak to four games.

The hard-running utility put the somewhat scrappy opening half down to the fact the match was played on the hallowed MCG turf.

“It was quite intense on the ball – we expected that with some good competition,” Berry said.

“Also playing on the ‘G, everyone’s going to come out 10 per cent harder so we expected that start.”

VFL HIGHLIGHTS: Dons v Cats

Berry’s standout performance consisted of 22 disposals, four marks and two goals, one of which resulted in a bit of media attention due to his unique ‘save the bumblebees’ goal celebration.

“Growing up, you always talk about kicking goals on the MCG, so to kick two it’s a bit of an unreal feeling at the moment.”

He recognised the Cats as a competitive outfit, and said the main focus was ensuring the group kept up with their pace and intensity.

He was also his harshest critic, saying he was “happy but not content” with his individual impact.

“We knew Geelong were a good contest-to-contest side, so our aim was to just stay in the contest and overall beat them with the talent we have.

“We’re only four games in though, so we’re still building because it’s a big year ahead.”

Next weekend sees Essendon return home to host a double-header against Casey, with the VFLW side playing its season opener from 11:30am followed by the boys at 2pm.

“We’re very excited – we had a function a couple of weeks ago with the women’s team and it’s very exciting for them to play their first game,” Berry said.

“Obviously it will be a prelim rematch (for us) as well, so it’s going to be a huge weekend for both teams.”

The double-header will be held at Windy Hill on Saturday, May 11.
