Vin Irwin was a small rover and utility player who was a member of the 'Mosquito Fleet'. He was agile and very versatile with fine skills.

Irwin came to Essendon from North Melbourne where he played from 1919 to 1921.

He was in the back pocket in the 1923 premiership team and in the forward pocket in the 1924 premiership side. He was a member of the side that later lost in controversial circumstances to Footscray (VFA) at the end of that year where some players were accused of throwing the game.

Irwin was dangerous around the goals and was Essendon second top goalkicker in 1924, 1925 and 1926. He kicked 10 goals in a game in 1924 which was the equal highest goal tally by any Essendon player to that time. He also kicked six goals in a game in 1926.

He was selected in the State side in 1922, 1925 and 1926.

After leaving Essendon, Irwin went to Bendigo in 1928 and then to Oakleigh in 1929 and 1930.

His brother, Frank played 45 games for Carlton (1925-1927).

Vin Irwin died on 29th May, 1959.
