Exciting key defender Zach Reid has signed a three-year contract extension, committing to the red and black until at least the end of the 2028 AFL season.
Born and raised in Leongatha in country Victoria, Reid was selected by Essendon with pick No. 10 in the 2020 AFL Draft and was viewed as one of the most promising tall defenders due to his athleticism, composure, and elite kicking ability for a player of his size.
At just 23 years of age, Reid has shown true country grit to overcome early career setbacks due to injuries - to now emerge as one of the most promising key defenders in the league.
Playing a career-best stretch of games, Reid was a standout this year’s Anzac Day match against Collingwood, he impressed in one-on-one contests, taking three contested marks and had 16 disposals, at an efficient 81.3% in wet conditions, which highlights his composure under pressure. Another stand out match was in Round 9 win against Sydney where he had 27 disposals, 14 marks, five intercept marks, eight intercept possessions and seven spoils.
Reid said he was proud to continue his journey in the sash and is eager to use this contract extension as motivation for the coming years.
“I'm incredibly grateful the club stood by me, and I'm so happy I could repay their trust," Reid said.
“I really believe in where this club is headed, and I'm genuinely excited about what this group can achieve together. I love working with this playing group, coaches and all staff; we've got so much potential, and I'm keen to see us truly reach it."
“Essendon is a great club with a proud and rich history. This club means so much to me, and the chance to continue playing in front of our amazing, passionate fans – who turn up every single week, no matter what – that's something truly special. Their unwavering support is a huge part of why I wanted to stay and why I believe in what we're building here.”
His composed presence, strong marking ability, and impressive footy IQ have seen him become a key asset in the backline this season, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed from those around him.
General Manager List & Recruiting, Matt Rosa, is not surprised by Reid’s impressive season and is excited to lock away a key piece of the Clubs future.
“Zach is an incredibly talented young defender who has shown true resilience to deliver high quality performances this season. We knew if he could get his body right, then these types of performances would come,” Rosa said.
"He's demonstrated the ability to overcome challenges, which truly speaks to his character and dedication."
"We see him as a key player for our Club for a long time, and the contract extension is a vote of confidence in what he's building both on and off-field at the Bombers.
The Bomber faithful can look forward to Reid donning the sash alongside the number of other exciting youngsters over the coming years.
