Bomber recruit Brendon Goddard is confident Essendon is the right fit for him after spending time with the entire playing group this week.

Goddard, currently on the Gold Coast with his new teammates for a training camp, said he had settled in well and is enjoying his new club.

“The initial meeting with my new teammates was in Colorado with nine other boys which was quiet easy and then meeting with the rest of the group on Friday at Windy Hill for a skills session,” Goddard said.

“It has been relatively easy to be honest, you find footy clubs are mostly the same with similar characters and there is always good blokes.”

Goddard said there were a number of reasons behind his decision to move clubs.

"It's a decision I've made and obviously there are some people that are happy and some that are not but you quickly realise you can't please everybody," he said.

"I'm not going to say the exact reason [I left] because there's more than one.

"The four-year contract [Essendon offered] was quite important for my security and my partner's security but there are a number of things along with that.

"The opportunity to play more in the midfield is something appealing as well but that's all I'll say for now."

Goddard, who said the move had been "reasonably easy" consulted widely before making the decision, but insists it wasn't made until after the season and the speculation surrounding his possible departure had minimal impact on his football.

"It wasn't until the very end of the season where you start to think things aren't going as well as you thought with contract talks and a few other things," he said.

"It's obviously another thing that plays on your mind and all players know that if there's things that are bubbling away mentally it does harm your footy … but I thought I dealt with [the speculation] reasonably well."

Goddard made the decision to join Essendon after long discussions with his manager and others close to him that he respected.

He said he was excited about the talent the Bombers list possesses.

“I just thought Essendon was a really good fit for me who I could offer a lot to and there for in return the club can make me a better person and a better footballer,” he said on SEN Radio.

“I think the list is in a really good spot, they (Essendon) have shown at the start of the season when they are playing their best footy they are capable.

“The spine of the team has a lot of talent and will hold the team in good stead.”

The former Saint said the opportunity to play more time in the midfield was also a motivating factor for his move.
