Essendon’s VFL team’s season has come to an end and with it their finals campaign after going down to Werribee by 19 points in the first elimination final at North Port Oval on Sunday afternoon.

The Bombers burst out of the blocks in the opening quarter kicking with a heavy wind with a six goal to one first term to take a 37 point lead into the first change.

Cory Dell’Olio booted three of his five goals in the first term as the young midfield fired through Travis Colyer and Jason Ashby off half back.

The intensity around the contest in the first term lacked in the second as Werribee made the most of their turn kicking with the wind.

Adam Maric kicked the first two goals of the second quarter within 60 seconds for Werribee setting up 8 unanswered goals for the quarter and a 24 point lead to Werribee at half time.

Alex Browne who toiled hard all day kicked the first goal of the second half for the Bombers as they began to regain momentum.

A stellar goal from Will Hams out of the pack followed by two quick ones to Dell’Olio saw the Bombers right back in the contest heading towards the last change.

A goal to Ben Speight right on the siren in the goal square killed all the momentum of the red and black and gave the Tigers a 16 point led at three quarter time.

Scott Gumbleton who struggled to get near the ball for most of the day was moved into the ruck to start the last quarter with the team told to ‘take the game on’ by coach Hayden Skipworth.

It did not last long when Ben McKinley booted a pair in the final term to seal the deal for Werribee and set up a clash with Casey next weekend.

Will Hams was the most consistent Bomber all day providing a contest and run through the middle of the field and was ably assisted by Nick O’Brien who capped off an impressive second season on the Bombers list.

Cory Dell’Olio’s bag of five was also a highlight in what was a lackluster performance after the first quarter from the Bombers who end their inaugural season back as a stand alone VFL club with an elimination final loss next to their name.
