Essendon big man Shaun McKernan is confident he is ready to take any opportunity that comes his way after settling into his new club.

McKernan joined the Bombers during December’s pre-season draft after six seasons on the Adelaide list.

The 198cm ruckman said believes he is ready to line up for his debut in the red and black when he is called upon.

“I don’t think there is any limitations because I am on the rookie list and I know I will have to work hard,” McKernan said.

“I am prepared to work for my spot to try and get a role in the side so I am looking forward to it.”

The 24-year-old played both in the ruck and as a key position forward during his 34 games with the Crows and is placing no boundaries on the role he will play for the Bombers.

“I have had a 50/50 split at the moment (during training) and that is the role I really want to play both that forward and ruck role,” McKernan said.

“It would be good to get a run around the midfield and then go forward.”

McKernan has enjoyed working with premiership ruckman Steve Alessio who is currently the club’s specialists ruck coach.

Alessio has played a key role in developing the skill set of ruck trio McKernan, Jonathan Giles and Tom Bellchambers.

The developing ruckman has felt comfortable with how he has settled into his new environment.

“It has been pretty easy for me to be honest, all the boys have been pretty welcoming,” he said.

“The training is not too much different, everything is pretty much the same and there was already people I knew here so that made it easy for the transition.”
