Jonathan Giles has been named to make his Essendon debut this Sunday against the Western Bulldogs.

The former GWS player was traded to the Bombers at the end of last season in exchange for pick 53.

Essendon Coach James Hird said he expects the 27 year old to provide a strong contest this weekend.

“Jon’s been with us for nine months and we’ve been impressed with the improvement,” Hird said.

“He’s had two really good games in the reserves, so we’re happy that he’s in the side and looking forward to seeing what he’s got.”

Giles had 27 hit-outs in the VFL last weekend against Geelong ruckman Nathan Vardy.

He replaces Shaun McKernan who has been left out of the side.

“We think he’s a bit banged up and needs a bit of a rest so we’re actually not going to play him at all,” Hird said.

McKernan has carried the majority of the ruck load for the last five games in the absence of the injured Tom Bellchambers.
