Essendon hopes Jonathan Giles will provide a strong contest at the centre bounce when the side meets the Bulldogs tomorrow.

Giles has spent the season in the VFL as first Tom Bellchambers and then Shaun McKernan have been given opportunities to lead the Essendon ruck division.

“We thought his last two games have been the standard we wanted it,” Essendon Coach James Hird said.

“He’s taken a little bit of time to get to where we wanted him to get to.

“He’s ready to play.”

Giles will receive support from Joe Daniher as he comes up against Bulldogs ruckman Tom Campbell.

“Giles is up against a ruckman this week who is similar experience and I think it will be a good contest,” Hird said.

Giles and McKernan joined the Bombers in the off-season after the departure of Patrick Ryder.

“Shaun’s had five games in a row and been reasonable,” Hird said.

“He’s a bit sore in his groins so I think it’s the right time to change and put Giles in and see how he goes.

“We think both Shaun and Jonathan have a long term future here.

“We’re keen to develop them into the players we want them to be.”
