Adam Cooney will miss the remaining three matches of the season with an ankle injury.
The Brownlow medal winner has been playing in some discomfort in recent matches.
Cooney and the club have chosen to undergo arthroscopic surgery now to ensure the veteran is ready for the pre-season.
“Adam’s got a surface cartilage injury in his ankle,” Club Doctor Bruce Reid said.
“He’s been playing with some limitation from this and some pain.
“We’ve made the decision to get this fixed now to ensure he is right for the start of pre-season.”
Cooney has played 11 games for the Bombers in his first season at the club.
He averaged 17 disposals and kicked ten goals.
