Former Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd says it’s important the Club’s new Coach surrounds himself with staff that will complement any weaknesses he may have.

The Bombers have announced a five-person panel to conduct interviews with candidates for the vacant position.

The Club has also revealed Kevin Sheedy and Melbourne Storm’s Craig Bellamy will be used as sounding boards throughout the process.

Lloyd said the Adelaide Crows are a strong example of a group of coaches that complement each other.

“The new Coach isn't going to have everything, but it’s important they then surround themselves with strong people,” he said.

“If you’re not the strongest tactician but you’re a strong communicator, you get that person to assist you in that area.

“Probably what’s happening at Adelaide at the moment, you’ve got John Worsfold who may not be the strongest tactician anymore but he’s a good people’s person.  Then you’ve got Camporeale who’s got the tactical nous.

“I think that’s probably the perfect mix that they’ve currently got going at the moment.”

Lloyd said it’s important players feel they can approach the Coach to find out what they are doing well and where they need to improve.

“You have to be a good, strong communicator,” Lloyd said.

“I hear people out of the Western Bulldogs say just how amazing Luke Beveridge has been whether you’re playing in the firsts or you’re playing in the VFL.

“He’ll spend an amount of time with you every Monday just talking through whether you’re in the mix.

“That’s all players ask for – someone who can communicate really strongly with them.”
