Saturday’s game winning goal from Jason Ashby was the best goal of his playing career, according to the rebounding defender.

Speaking post-match amid the excitement of the celebrations, the 22 year-old reflected on the goal which gave the Bombers a game winning three point lead.

“It’s definitely my best goal, I haven’t kicked one for the whole year before then so it came at a good time,” Ashby said.

“Box Hill sent about four numbers behind the ball, I just went down and sat in a dangerous spot and luckily Shauny (Edwards) fed it out to me.

“I knew I hit it well, my kicks usually swing in so when I hit it I knew it would be a good chance.

“It was a good celebration getting us back in front as well.”

Essendon trailed by 14 points midway through the last term, before Ben Dobson kicked his fifth and Shaun Edwards booted two to put the side in front.

Box Hill responded with an answering goal to put them back in front with about 1:30 remaining.

That's when Ashby ventured forward and kicked the match winner.

The win moved the eighth placed Bombers two games clear of Box Hill in ninth position.

“It’s a huge win for our season; we have a good team and hopefully can have a fair bit of success going forward," Ashby said.

“I’m looking forward to hopefully getting a few more wins and going deep into the finals.”
