John Worsfold says it’s too early to tell how Essendon will use its blue chip draft picks.

The Bombers hold one of the strongest draft hands in their history following the conclusion of the home and away season.

For the first time, the Club holds the number one pick in the National and Pre-Season drafts.

Last week, Gold Coast’s Jaeger O’Meara stated his intention to leave the Suns.

Worsfold said the Bombers would be interested in a player of his ability but there was much to play out across the competition over the next few months.

“Knowing now the situation and the rules of the game with trading and draft picks, and obviously the pre-season picks, means we’ve got plenty to think about,” he told SEN.

“Names like O’Meara that come up we’re obviously very interested in but there is a lot of stuff we have to do to work out what’s best for us going forward.

“We’re going to make sure we use this draft and this pre-season draft to the best of our ability to improve our squad and get us ready to climb the ladder.

“You don’t know if you’re any chance of securing one of those good uncontracted players or not.

“But once we find that out, we can make the call – which way do we want to go with the draft.

“You don’t know which names are going to pop up over the next couple of weeks.”

Essendon ended its season with a 24-point win against Carlton.

It was the Bombers third win of the season, but Worsfold said the development of the playing group was another ‘win’ the Club could take pride in.

“It was probably the one thing we were aiming to try and achieve out of the year was constant commitment, constant belief in the effort that is required,” Worsfold said.

“The effort that is required to be an elite AFL player, regardless of worrying about results and getting down about potential losses and things like that.

“The players have grown enormously this year, especially the younger group.

“It is a challenge in an elite sporting industry that we’re all so demanding on wins and losses and ladder position.

“There are so many other ways you can be successful in our game.

“And that’s growing people, giving opportunities to young players and also building the culture of your Club.

“We feel as though we’ve made some really strong inroads this year in those areas and it means we can look back on it and say it was a year where we had a lot of successes.”
