Brendon Goddard says the Bombers were able to quickly turn their focus to the match against Brisbane, despite last Saturday’s momentous win.

Essendon will travel north tomorrow to take on the Lions, who are also coming off a round one victory.

The Dons opened the season by defeating Hawthorn by 25 points in front of nearly 80,000 fans.

Goddard said he and his teammates were able to reflect on the win over the weekend, before beginning their analysis of Brisbane.

“We move on by recognising the events, celebrating what we did – it’s always important to enjoy your wins and we made it pretty clear post game that we’d dissect and review the game and then quickly move onto next week,” Goddard told RSN.

“When we came in on Monday we were solely focused on Brisbane.”

Goddard has been involved in 34 wins since joining the Bombers.

He said the round one triumph ranked alongside some of the victories the side enjoyed in 2013.

“Just with the emotion of it all it probably sits up there with the two wins we had in Perth with Hirdy,” he said.

“That was obviously significant for the footy club and the weekend was significant for everyone.

“The build up was great, the Club did a lot of work with the supporters to involve them, the March to the ‘G, the Sheedy scarf ‘twirl’ – they did a great job.

“It was a pretty emotional week for everyone involved and to get the result was almost a fairy-tale.

“In saying that it’s one win against a good opposition – the challenge now after having such an emotional week is to back it up.

“I think this week is really significant.”

Queensland has been drenched by rain this week and Goddard said the Bombers addressed the prospect of playing in wet conditions early in their preparation.

“We’ll be aware of it, prepare for it … but regardless of what it is our effort doesn’t change,” he said.

“Our structure or our ball movement might have to change because of the conditions, but it’s a matter of planting the seed early and then crossing the bridge when we get to it.

“The weather is pretty unpredictable … they’re expecting a lot of rain today … but it’s meant to somewhat fine up over the next couple of days.”
